1. Looks good to me Time to get some woodchips flyin '
2. That's one of the nicest Wals i've ever seen ...GL
3. Wow ......Just like Shep's ....lovely Good luck with the sale
4. Emulsion is water based, i just wouldn't recommend using it. Good looking job though
5. Ahh right never seen it done this way before. I have done neck throughs with a step where you glue neck and sides leaving the neck proud then fitted a cap over the top. Aye ...[original] top horn looks a little ....erm .....odd (imo) Ian M
6. Good start Andy, loving the Bubinga ! Think the body shape is an improvement ...was never keen on the top horn, giving it a bit more shape looks much better. Looking forward to seeing this progress ...what's the neck spec? IanM
7. Yup whatever it is....... it's a beaut
8.
I have built one bass, a medium scale Alembic type fretless...it actually worked out quite well and has a nice tone. If I had more spare time then I would like another go. Your woodworking is really sharp....I'm more of a wood butcher in comparison.
It's all smoke and mirrors m8, majority of the work is done using a router and templates, there is surprising little 'real' whittling involved. Would love to see your fretless And thanks for all the kind comments from everyone it really is appreciated IanM
9. Finished the neck, so with no router to do the last bit i went on and did a bit of sanding.. Remodelled the body to bring the speed stripe out a bit more at the front, i think this improves the line a wee bit. Finally slapped some lacquer on to seal it and fill the grain. The neck is Goncalo Alves,(the same as the FB) but with no tiger stripes, it does have a little ripple though again this will get darker through time so the satinwood stripe will have more contrast,. I,ll have a new router by next weekend and can finally do the pickups. Still to buy the other hardware yet, i was going to go for black but thinking gold now IanM
10.
Hey, thanks for that! The only problem is that if I play it I will want to have it
Naw... I meant why no try building one yourself? Damn site easier than knocking out a Queen Anne bow fronted dresser. I used to visit a guy in Fife who my mate would get to set up his guitars, Ian Watt.. built beautiful bespoke furniture, and did a wee sideline in Basses too. IanM
11. Thanks Cloud. ..'ere why don't you give it a go?
12. A Little more progress ...... Frets in and levelled . Started on the neck carving ....
13. Thanks for the positive comments folks keeps an old man going ....I usually start to flag at this stage as all the 'big' stuff is done, all the jobs that are left are pretty monotonous. Simon - must admit i wish i had another board of Tigerwood in the stash it's lovely stuff. I will take a pic of my EUB sometime which has an identical fingerboard, over time it has turned to a deep orange/red/brown colour, looks even better imo. I think Rob Allen uses Tigerwood (Or Goncalo Alves) as fingerboards too. Owen -- what DO you mean IanM
14. Got the neck pocket routed but then my trusty old router died No shame to it though....must have been over 20 years old if it was a day ..!
15. Fantastisch * 3 Brilliant conversions Blablas
16. Cheers Bottle, That's the kind of thing i was on about, those HZ's are a tad hot for my liking. I have gone and acquired some pucker active Jazz Bass EMGs for this now though, really looking forward to hearing them. (Leads me onto a question for the electrics boffs) I am quite happy to use a passive tone control, but........ If i bung a pre-amp in for an active tone (probably NOT an EMG system btw)....can it run off the same battery as the pickups or should i route the bass for two batteries? IanM
17. Andy, hopefully the woods should all blend together nicely in the end (well thats the plan) its been a few days and the Fingerboard is already much darker than it was. Owen.... glad you like 'em , this will probably be the last i'll document on here TBH. Thanks again Fellows ! Roll on the weekend, get the side dots in and FB radiussed and then on to my most hated of jobs ....routing the body Ian
18. Managed to put in a few hours this weekend..... Got all the construction finished for the neck, settled for the Eucalyptus binding on the FB ... Had some stuff left over for a matching headstock but it didn't have a lot of figure, went for this instead which will match nicely when it's all done. The Tigerwood looks really light when it's freshly sanded, gets darker over time. All done for another week ! Ian
19. Much prefer your carving to Mr Cort's, looking good
20. I stopped gigging years ago (probably into the decades now ...eek). I just got fed up with not knowing where the next £££'s would come from, gigs were starting to slow down and 'backing tracks' were quickly making musicians redundant. And looking ahead to life of cover bands and giving bass lessons to uninterested, unmotivated and mostly undeserving youngsters (I used to teach bass but never actually had any pupils that had any passion or real talent) made me get a proper job. I do miss getting into the 'zone', but that's about it...
21. Just a little progress Neck joint done and glued the headstock veneers. Also did another tigerwood FB with the same binding as the top (Eucalyptus), i had some left over from my last build.... got to thinking that there wouldn't be a better bass to use it up on, looks good so i'll probably go for this. Hopefully get out into the shed this weekend so i'll get some pics then. Thanks for the good comments Ian
22. I'm going to pinch that wee hole drilling jig idea ! so simple it's brilliant
