Bit more progress ... 38mm Nut on this one and 33" scale (of course) Just a few oles to drill now, and finish off the frets. 11 pieces of timber went into this neck ! Neither wonder it's taken a while .

For a big selection www.exotichardwoodsukltd.com is probably a good place to start for tops (good selection) but if you are using a donor body which has already been shaped maybe you are just looking to add a top veneer?

Wee update... Well the Eucalyptus bass is just waiting for a nut and some matching hardware. Really love the way the Satinwood turned out, it just shimmers in the light, (This is the African variety Movingui) still got a bit left too Seemed silly to send the tuners back (they don't go wrong). This bass is now going elsewhere but NOT the Emgs !!, so that just means .... ' Modified the shape a bit, slightly slimmer on the hips, put a bit of weight on the waist and the bottom horn has been pulled out a bit for better access. Capped by a lovely piece of Primetimbers finest English Walnut. The back is Sweet Chestnut. I had a lot of problems with splits and defects on this board.Unfortunately just couldn't match the grain/colour on each half. On the plus side though, i did get the ripples running nicely (just visible...crap photos). Fantastic wood imo, looks like Oaky Ash but it's much lighter in weight, finishes well too All native woods yay ! I'll buy a mismatched set of hardware for this, then match them both up in the end Ian PS Tried to get a colour comparison with some older tigerwood, Pretty sure these came from the same board ..

Back on track Andy , I used to do that with neck splices myself but just find it easier using a router table to hog out the channel now. Any time i've used DD the quality of timber has been absolutely first class, that's lovely looking mahogamananny ...real stuff too and not just an african brown wood in disguise.

Not so good Andy, still better now than it splitting later, you should be due a replacement imo..

You can get hum from piezo too, ensure everything is well [u]shielded[/u] and earthed.

Got the tuners in ...wrong colour..... they sent Black problem is ..i like 'em but everything else is gold ! Swithering on sending back or just keeping them, i could use them up on my next build i suppose.

Active pups have less wire in them and therefore induce a weaker signal. You then need a preamp to boost[b] all [/b]frequencies (before going into any tone circuit active OR passive). Active pups therefore have a built in preamp. With Traditional pickups.....the more wire wound on the 'hotter' it gets, the bass frequencies become stronger at the expense of higher frequencies, you get a 'louder' pickup but with a limited frequency range. Active pups however, give a flatter, broader range of frequencies which you can then go on to cut/boost to a greater extent than you can with more traditional wound pups. Maybe someone clever could explain it far better.. er Ian

Looks good Andy...how thick is that body blank? (I know you remove more than usual with this style of carve). It's one end of the spectrum to the other when you look at your other project that's on the go. Ian
