1. I think it can be learned by submerging on the style you plan on playing. i.e. if you want to play latin, you need to listen to it for hours on end, until you feel every change and the most important signatures.
2. I do beleive so. I got my Compact a week ago, but haven't played a lot with it. Alex told me that it takes a bit for the speaker to break in. When it does the lows will sound smoother and will handle more of it.
3. Can I make a suggestion? Would be cool to have Steve Lawson doing a workshop, he's not that far away from Surrey. Would be worth contacting him.
4. Cool The harmonic vibrato is done using the floyd rose he has on his bass.

6. I want in too Mark Bass F1, Barefaced Compact Spector Euro LX 5, T-Bass 5 string in lovely cherry.
7. Flea on Aeroplane. Good stuff indeed.
8. DON'T give them names with numbers. Otherwise the compact will be called B115 (B for Barefaced) and then Ampeg will sue your ass, and you don't want to be associanted with heavy cabs do you?
9. Highlander I like it. Sounds catchy enough.
10. How about calling it "mine is bigger than yours" Now on all seriousness I too think that the names could do with a bit more thought. Compact - I like it, and I have one Big One - Not Very Keen on it Big Baby - Better Midget - Not too sure Vintage - Spot on, coolest cab in the market.
11. You got the reason that was good. Now just move on and learn from your mistakes, don't overthink it.
12. I had 3 very different experiences with Bass Shops in London Bass Cellar is the worst by far. I walked in there asked to try the F1 and then asked him to match Bass Centre, and Andertons that were selling it almost £80 cheaper. He goes on about the stock thing and that all of those would be sold by the end of the week and that it was already too cheap. Of course I rang Andertons that day and received the Mark Bass the day after. Bass Centre, when I was shopping for a decent bass I wlaked into Bass Centre and tried about 10-15 basses in one afternoon. The guy at the shop was as helpful as he could be. I fell in love with a Spector he had there, but I wanted it new, and a 5 string, the used one was a 4 strings. So he tells me to go to oxford st and try sound control as they are the stockist for Spector, I did that and bought my Spector that afternoon. I will always be gratefull to that guy. Bass Gallery, I bought my Acme from there as well as my T-bass, both used stock, Alex is always helpful, doesn't presure you and replies to my emails within hours. It's always a pleasure to deal with. Even if they don't always have the cheapest prices they do have a great custom service.
13. Jamiroquai all the way. Canned heat Mr Moon If I like it I do it Cosmic Girl Too you to die to name but a few. Also I really like to play electronic stuff like, Daft Punk, Moloko or Gorillaz there's always great bass lines and once you get the hang of it you can always add your own flavour.
14. so two Compacts are better on the side? Or are we talking about cabs on the side, but facing different directions. i.e. 15 degrees to the left and the other 15 degrees to the right?
15.
I've only been using this amp properly in the last few weeks and i must say i'm very impressed with it. I bought it sight unseen from the states without ever hearing Genz Benz stuff before (I don't think we even have a dealer over here). I bought it to replace my ancient Peavey Mark VIII and my EBS Fafner and it does the job very well. So far i've only tested through my 8ohm Avatar 4x10 but the volume I can get is impressive. The solid state channel is very clean and quite warm and you can get a bit of edge if you use the hi-gain switch. The tube channel sounds nice and warm with low gain and with the right EQ on the hi-gain setting you can get some pretty beefy distortion. It's very handy that you can control the volume of the channels individually so you can go from super clean to all out grind with a tap of the footswitch. All in all great head so far but I haven't gigged with it yet so time will tell. Any questions, feel free to ask. Cheers, John.
Does it not get confusing with so many knobs? I really like small amps (i own an f1) but that looks like a rather busy front panel.
16. I swapped an Acme for a Compact So Friday I went to pick up my new Compact. If you don’t care to read scroll down to see the pics. But before that a little bit of story. I had never met Alex before Friday despite speaking to him on the phone or on email countless times. Alex is a 5 star guy, when I got there we started chatting just to realize ten minutes later than we had never really met, funny moment. Now the cabs, Alex had my cab there ready for me to take home, plus about 5 or 6 others ready to have the speakers placed and the grilles fitted. Also there were two Big Ones ready to go, more on that later. The Compact: first impression is that the cab is really and I’ll repeat really light. The wood used is very thin, thinner than expected. Alex’s finish looks good and it will be easy to clean if needed, I was a bit worried about scratches but after having a closer look at home, that shouldn’t be a problem, the finish looks though enough. This is the most straight forward cab I ever owned. One speaker 1x15, one speakon input and that is it, no bells or whistles. The cab looks much better in person than it does on the pics and the port and logo help to a very good look overall. The grille is something in between Trace Elliot grilles and the Ampeg ones it looks good as well, the whole cab is finished to a high standard with no rough edges. How it sounds? Well I had only a chance of trying it out yesterday at Alex’s garage and today at home at low volumes. This is a very well balanced cab, no harsh highs even when boosting the treble. That noise you ear when sliding your fingers down the strings from one chord to another it’s not so prominent so I’ll guess that this cab will be a great choice for recording. The lows are much defined even with the B string and Alex boosting all the lows on my F1, the cab just performs. I saw the Eminence speaker Alex uses and they do look the business, they look like they can take lots and lots of lows and volume. I can see this cab cutting through very easily without the need to boosting mids, I tried it today with both my basses and I managed to get a very old school sound out of my T-Bass and a great growl out of my Spector. I’m very excited about practice today and then my gig on Friday, I want to see how it performs at a proper volume. The Big One, well first thing, IT’S BIG, seriously the cab is not small, but weights very little, very manageable with the recessed wheels and two well placed handles one on the side and the other right at the top, pushed back so it doesn’t get on the way of you amp. It sounds good too, but with more mids and a lot more highs than the compact, I can see it being a great choice for rockers who need tons of volume and a cab that cuts through a wall of guitars with ease. That’s the one. For me it is too big and it would be overkill, and plus it wouldn’t fit my car. Oh and if you plan on buying one ask Alex to ship with the vintage look, instead of black he has a kind of grey/silver grille that looks ubber cool. I’ll let you all know how the cab did at the gig.
17. I got my new Compact on Friday and asked that very question to Alex, who answered that while he can see why one would stack them with the speakers close together, He would advive to stact them vertically one on top of the other normally. I'm sure Alex will come up with the scientific explanaiton for that.
18. Looks like it is. But i'd like to see a picture before I buy one. It will help keeping the pristine look.
19. I really like that bass line, I've learning ages ago, but it never gets old.
20. I've done that. of course the band leader provided coffee donuts and bacon sandwiches, it was all good. I do prefer rehearsals in the morning, that's when I'm at my peak. (i'm a morning person)
21. Someone also said that a bass player doesn't need to play fast, but it needs to be able to listen fast. Chill out, keep it simple, try to keep it with the drum kick, and pay attention to the accents, but most of all just enjoy the experience, it's always good to play with people more experienced than ourselves. Providing they are cool people of course.
22. Me likes that a lot. The icing on the cake would be Richard Bona as a late guest.
23. Did it happened here? If not its not a shakedown
