1. I did that with Bass Guitar Magazine this month. Although I love Spectors and I find Doug interesting, there wasn't much more there for me.
2. Some pages ago I've mentioned that I embarrassed myself when I met Steve Harris. I've found a pic. I'm the one on the left, this pic was taken about 10 years ago.
3.
Isn't the NS2000 Korean? I thought it was the thru-neck version of the Q4? Not that there's anything wrong with them of course, great basses, just not what you're looking for to compare?
Maybe you are right. I couldn't find any NS 2000 on the website. Oh well looks like I won't be getting my hands in a NS any time soon.
4. That's a pity. I've checked the list of basses on the next bass bash and there's a NS 2000 from dave.c, hopefully I'll be able to play it.
5. I met Steve Harris at their bar in Algarve and he was there with his son. I had met him before for authographs but never like that. So I just told him I loved the new album and if he was enjoying Portugal. He took a photo with us and then we left him with his son and daughter. He's a very cool guy. I once met dani from Cradle of Filth and i was suprised how short the guy is. But other than that he's a very nice guy to talk to.
6.
Having owned a Euro LX and now an NS I'd say that the NS is worth the extra, but in my case walnut wings gives a deeper sound than the usual maple I believe and the cut and boost pre is better than a Tone Pump. I was playing the NS last night at band practice and was falling ever deeper in love, especially with the bridge pickup growl. Twice as good? Impossible to use that analogy unless the LX was totally pants which it isn't by any means.
Are you based in Kent by any means? I'm considering changing the tone pump for a pre with cut/boost, but other than that I love my bass, it's just gorgeous.
7.
I tried both a couple of times at the start of the year when looking for a new bass. The Euro was great, and very tempting, but the NS was beautiful in every way! To me, I wouldn't measure it as 'is this twice as good', but it just felt like pure and total quality. If I could have stretched to the (secondhand) price tag I'd have bitten someones arm off for it, but then I really appreciate things of great quality in life.
What did you buy in the end?
8.
I think Alex was a bit wary of posting sound clips as there are so many variables (e.g. quality of recording, type of amp / bass used, computer speakers etc.) and no sound clip can really convey what a fairly neutral sounding cab actually sounds like, how loud it can get, how it responds to EQ etc. May be worth getting in touch with the nearest person on this list to see if you can arrange to try it out
Very true, my sound may not be what you like, and my sound with the band is different to my sound when I'm on my own. Plus I wasn't pushing the cab, just practising for a gig.
9.
Anywhere near Devon at any point? I'm desperate to try one of these! Are there any videos or sound clips of the cab being used? If anyone could upload a video it would be amazing, I think just the cab with (or VS) a loud drummer would suffice nicely. Cheers Guys
Not great quality but hey. It was recorded with a Sony Erickson mobile by our singer on our last rehearsal. It was a video that I converted to MP3 I'm running my T-bass in active mode with a bit of added bass on the preamp and a little cut on the treble as the strings are new. Plugged into a Mark bass F1 all flat with volume at a quarter and through a compact
10. Thanks guys. I know the thing about feel, when I bought my Spector I had the chance to buy a more expensive bass, but the Euro spoke to me like none other. I guess I'll have to get my hands on one to see if it would justify the price tag. But at the moment i'm very happy with my Euro and I'm skint
11. I was talking to another bass chatter today about our Spector's EuroLX, and we both fancy the NS, but because we never tried one, we don't know if we are only being taken by the hype. Does anyone here owns both? Cetera? Are NS twice as good? I've played some nices basses in my time and I have to say that the craftmanship on my Euro is up there with the best. But the price difference sugests NS as being twice as good as an Euro? Or is it that the US tag makes it twice as expensive? Any coments will be appreciatted. David
12.
Hmmm, not sure about this. The bigger the stage they play, the further away you're likely to be. To take an extreme example, last year I went to 2 gigs; one was a three piece folk band in a small basement, with the musicians just five or six feet away from us, the other was the Rolling Stones at the O2. Both bands put on a great show, but the basement gig was far more involving.
I can definitely see your point. I watched Iron Maiden at the Twickenham Stadium and they were a small dot across the stadium where Steve Lawson/Yolanda Charles/Todd Johnson were all playing two meters from me and I got to chat with Todd for a bit at Drabucka bar. But I would also be happy for them to be big enough to play at the O2 but then they would stop doing those intimate gigs and i'd be gutted. It's a no win situation really.
13.
I think that was the point Cheddatom was making anyway.
Ups I jumped on him too quickly. But why would you sudenly stop enjoying a band just because they are sucessful now? I would be pleased for a band that i like to stop playing at the secondary stages of a festival to become a headliner.
14.
Every band in the world were amazing for their first 1 or 2 albums and then "sold out" or "turned commercial" or just basically got too trendy for people who consider themselves "alternative".
Every single one???? How about Pear Jam? And so many other bands that carry on coming out with good albums without being sell outs. We do play Mr Brightside as well and for me is the same as SOF, Use Somebody, Dakota, I Predict a Riot, All these things I've done. They are all rock crowd pleasers. No more no less. That does not mean they are bad songs, they may be annoying because you hear them so many times, but they are not bad songs at all. As a band you want to be heard by as many people as you can, that sometimes leads to your music being played countless times which for KOL is not a bad thing. I rememeber when Origin of Symetry came out my mates where showing it to me and saying that it was tottaly alternative and we never heard it on the radio. Nowadays every single radio plays Muse. Does that make them a worse band or a sucessful one?
15. Our drummer took some time to nail it, but now we play it every time. Punters love it, they can't have enough of it.
16. I have an Euro LX exactly like that. How much money would you want from my pocket if we were to trade?
17. Hey Steve. Good stuff, glad you enjoying it. The fretless work is a bit off but I'm sure that in the right hands that bass can be played and enjoyed. I like fretless just prefer the electric versions
18. I'm giving away my acoustic today, I don't play it and it's not my best bass by a long shot.
19. One of the drummers I most admire is Carter Beuaford and he's a very busy one, but is taste and way to place fills and odd beats is fantastic
20. I know someone will mention it, so might as well be the first. Barefaced cabs all the way. and now lighter than ever.
21. Hmmm Alex any chance we can get some Barefaced stickers, I like the covers but I want my to have the logo...
22.
Yes, definitely! Alex
Wierd I thought it would caught fire almost instantly. That way I can just run it from DI to the h4. cool
23.
I guess that's a modern classic, so yes! DI'd from your Markbass F1, all EQ flat, three different pickup balances, would be great. Any techniques you play. I think 128k MP3 is perfectly sufficient quality so files should be emailable. Alex
Will do. I have only the ZoomH4 to record with. Hope that's ok. Techniques, I use my thumb quite a lot, both as a pick or a la sting style. I'm sure you will get tons of slappers. (no pun intended) Can I run my amp without the speaker pluged in? Don't think you can.
24. I have a Spector Euro 5 LX with Elixirs, if that's any help. My other bass is a Status T-bass 98 series, don't think you are interested in that.
