  1. 😮 That's actually mental...... Si
  2. Very interested that a number of people are up for this little (big?) challenge. I should perhaps explain my own feelings behind why I thought I might do it...... Ultimately, I think too much about gear, like many here, always thinking about what next piece of gear could replace or potentially better the last piece. Which is strange, as I have a lot of fantastic gear that allows me to do everything I want (need) to, at a very high level. Obviously this a well-known story, and basically the definition of GAS. It's usually well humoured and dismissed as a bit of fun, but it genuinely takes up a fair chunk of my thought processes, which kind of gets a bit tiring if I'm honest with myself. So instead of trying to manage it, I'm going to stop it altogether, safe in the knowledge that I have some amazing gear, and that actually nothing will change haha. As mentioned, in actual fact, I only have a couple of very intentional purchases left, so if we're including those in my 'exceptions'....I'm technically starting from now haha. Si
  3. Oooo, way more people up for this than I expected haha. I think to keep the thread clean, we stick to the exact premise of no purchases other than strings/unrepairable breakages, (sorry @adamg67, although that basically means you're free to expand the collection again haha). So, myself, @bassfan & @Chiliwailer currently. Nice little support group 😂. Si
  4. *EDIT* Off the back of this becoming more popular than I had anticipated....here are the RULES: Tier 1 Challenge During the calendar year of 2019 (01/01/19 - 31/12/19): - No bass gear purchases/trades whatsoever, be that amps, pedals, basses, accessories. Tier 2 challenge (should you play other instruments, engage in music production etc) - As above, but extended to your other musical gear Allowances in both tiers: - Strings (sticks, skins, reeds etc) - Maintenance/setups that only involve work on existing aspects of your bass (ie no purchasing a preamp to add to it) - If something breaks through no unusual intervention of your own, and is unable to be repaired, you may replace it. - Educational purchases, ie tutorial books, lessons, anything that furthers your playing is permitted. - If you have purchased something in 2018, you are able to take delivery of it within 2019. - If you have put down a deposit on something before committing to this, which then requires a final payment within 2019, that single payment permitted. However you may wish to explore whether you can pay the balance early (if you're a little OCD like me). I think that about covers it, please also treat this thread as a bit of a 'support group', any funny stories about near misses, discoveries about your current gear that you might not have focused on before, things learned by spending money on learning over gear etc etc etc. Finally, I would like to say that THIS IS JUST FOR FUN, if someone falls off the wagon, no-one cares. This initially just started out to see whether I can achieve it.....a rather extreme exercise in really appreciating the amazing gear I already have. *original post* I've been thinking about this for a month or so, but Al Krow's topic about the difficulty of going for 9 days without a gear purchase has prompted me to start this thread somewhat early, just for fun really. The setup? I'm setting myself a lofty goal for 2019....... No gear purchases all year. You heard me, I've said it here first. NO bass gear purchases for a year! There are a couple of (what I consider to be reasonable) exceptions to this: 1) If I haven't been able to secure one before Jan (my self imposed deadline), I'll allow myself to buy a decent gig-bag for my Mustang bass. 2) Strings, although I have a decent stash for at least 6 months or longer. 3) If anything should break, that cannot be repaired, I'll allow myself to replace that piece of equipment should it be necessary. I figure I'll update the thread weekly (as daily may be a bit much with 'nothing purchased' 365 times in the thread haha) So there it is, my statement of intent. Up until Jan I have two purchases planned, and one order to arrive: 1) COG Mini 66 - purchased Dec '18 2) Noble Preamp - collecting at NAMM in Jan '19, paid for in Dec '18 3) Lakland US 44-64 Classic - paid for Nov '18 Let's see how I do Anyone want to join in? Si
  5. Oooo my old Maruszczyk P/JJ pops up again!! Si
  6. Have an amazing time! Sorry I can’t be there, lookin forward to the blog already!! See you next year all being well! Si
  7. Hmmmm, hope the next one up in the line is coming at same time! Want better than a £35 bag really. Si
  8. Great job! I always loved the groove from Too Many Puppies if he wants another to crack on with Si
  9. If and when someone purchases this, let me know, and I'll ensure that all the various bundled software codes are reset and you have full access to them in your own name. Si // Focusrite Media Relations
  10. Oh sorry Ignore me! Si
  11. Might be easier to list the effects you want to use, then people can suggest brown pedals within that criteria Si

    Mastering

Friend of mine has had a bunch of mastering work by Tim Turan (see above) and swears by him! Si
  13. As has been mentioned, there is no 'best', just lots of excellent artisans who achieve the end result in different ways. Other than that, you'll simply get a lot of members here putting forth brands that they themselves own, which is fine, but it's purely subjective. Si
  14. I'm jealous, would love a Hollowbody30, or a Decade shortscale (US built only unfortunately). Si

    DIY Effects

Hi all, I have an unbuilt Guma Drive kit with enclosure (https://schalltechnik04.de/en/instructions/guma-drive) that simply isn't going to get built any time soon (largely because of time and I already have a Guma-Antique that is more me). So if you're confident enough (there's a couple of surface-mount components), I'm going to be selling it. Will list in the Effects Marketplace in a minute, but thoughts I'd heads-up here if anyone is keen. Seems to be sold out on the Schalltechnik_04 website. Si
  16. I once squarnched a Plumbus. Do not recommend! Si
  17. Not significantly, there is probably a bit due to the Nylon tape, but nothing the amp can’t handle. It’s an active bass too, so I might not have noticed it as much compared to my passive basses. Si
  18. Why not alternate where the rehearsals are (assuming there's a decent place near you), so the travelling is fair between everyone? I'm also at the age where I pretty much won't 'rehearse' unless it's a writing session or there's a gig coming up. Literally no point in running songs one already knows for no particular reason, paying for the privilege, then going home. And that's for originals only, never rehearse for covers unless it's something particularly in-depth (like I did a large choir gig around Christmas last year). Even if I do a dep gig, it's for the band to supply me with keys, arrangements (preferably in audio form), or at least be confident calling the arrangements on the night. Si
  19. Presumably that's just a photo of the guitar bag? Not a photo you've managed to find of the Shortscale bag? I would put my trust in Fender to actually fit the bag to the basses they make.....if not.....on with my project lol Si
  20. That said, Googling that product number gives the old bag, are they simply repurposing the SKU code for the new shape bag? Below screenshot from Sweetwater. Si
  21. Interesting, I've seen that range of their bags before, but not the short-scale (makes sense if it isn't launched yet). The other bags in the range have three feature-based price points, about £25, about £65, and about £95. Which I think are actually spot on! If you have a support ticket open, could you ask when they plan to drop them? If it's a month, great, if it's a year, I'll continue with my little project. Si
  22. I don't think he's saying that you still avidly listen to the same stuff you did as a kid, but that the feelings experienced and chemicals released when you do listen to that older stuff, music that moulded your childhood, is significantly different to what happens when you listen to newer music now. It's less cerebral, more linked to emotional memory etc. And actually, the research seems to support that. That's not to say that there aren't exceptions, but I would struggle to believe that someone who loved a band or artist when they were a teenager, actively dislike that band/artist now.....even if it's a guilty pleasure in the eyes of more snobbish company. Si
  23. That looks to be the standard bass bag, not the short-scale. The short-scale aspect is called out on other listings, not on this one is all. Si
  24. They're discontinued. Si
