My 2003 S1 MIA Jazz is stunning, never played anything better. With more modern MIJ's (90's onwards), also bear in mind that they do the lower-end basswood bodied, japanese electronics ones, as well as the alder/ash bodied, US electronics ones......two different basic price points innit. Si

Whats the point of trying a bass out and then buying it online?? There's a great probability that the one you buy online will be different enough for you not to be happy than the one you loved in the shop! Support your bricks and morter music shops and do yourself a favour by doing so Si

The other way around it is to have the bass player or drummer start a song. Obviously only really works on some songs (Valerie, Bille Jean, Supersitition etc), but its one thing to remember!, then the guitarist can join in his part when ready. This is the thing, I don't consider my '73 Jazz to be an investment....I'm clearly never going to retire on it lol. BUT I have a bass which will never lose money (unless there is a MASSIVE shift in how people perceive vintage Fenders), unlike all of my other basses. Now, couple that with the fact that it gets taken out and used, plays fantastic, and sounds good (although not as great as I'm planning, but thats down to the Wizard pickups). I like the fact that a bass that I'm playing has been out at gigs and clubs for the past 37 years!!. I do agree that these things should be out being played. Unless a piece is MINT/Museum Grade (in which case it's probably a dog anyway ), the person clearly bought the bass for 'Mojo'.....so get out and use it!. Would I buy a £10,000 1964 Jazz simply because it was a 1964 Jazz?? No, not a chance. Would I buy a £10,000 1964 Jazz because it sounded and played awesome at gigs, looked the part....whilst at the same time appreciating in value?.......(with a big-ass bank loan)....YES. Remember that it turns into a Hobby too, it kinda comes back to the playing/verses gear discussion. I love playing, I love gigging with other musicians etc etc. At the same time, it's fun learning about the history of these Fender basses, the various time lines, transition periods and what-not. I don't go out drinking, doing drugs, snowboarding......I read about vintage Fenders lol.....sad? perhaps, but fun! Si

Couldn't see that this had been cleared up, but split-coil doesn't mean hum cancelling. You can get humbucker Precision pickups (Dimarzio DP122 for example), but it's the arrangement of the magnets in each coil that makes it 'bucking! Cool Si

If you're looking to tune down long-term, and want to set your bass up accordingly, I can't recommend Newtone Strings enough. When my band FSOF was playing in Drop C exclusively, I had two basses set up in Drop C standard (C, F, Bb, Eb) with their High Tension strings. The extra tension meant that I could have my strings in normal guages 45-105, and a low action too, nothing flapping or buzzy! Just to re-iterate, I used 45-105 guages in Drop C Standard with pretty normal action. The only negative with high tension strings is that Newtone taylor them to the tuning you want, so although you'd probably be able to take them up to Drop D standard, getting them to E standard would probably make them too tight to play comfortablely. This obvisuly isn't an issue if you're in Drop C all the time. Si

If it's just for one song, just transcribe it for standard tuning!? You'll lose the low C and Low F, but with the right EQ, Joe Bloggs won't notice Si
