  1. I wouldn't agree with this at all, I would say that, ultimately (music 'business' aside) the overriding purpose is, or should be, the creation of the music between the performers, the 'conversation' that they're having for their own enjoyment. The crowd is just there for the ride. And so with that in mind, the experience of the player, whether that extends to their instrument or not, becomes an intrinsic part of that. Whether the player puts any importance on it is another, subjective, question. Si
  2. I don't think it's a lot of people who broadly think vintage instruments are 'better', I think those who play 'vintage' instruments (and I'd probably suggest that means pre 1980 in the context of this discussion) are the minority and a LOT more people play new/modern instruments, and those who ONLY play vintage instruments because of a perceived superiority is even fewer than that. I imagine, in most cases, any instrument used at a given time is seen to be the best instrument for that purpose for that player, be it vintage or otherwise. I bought a 1971 Precision because I was interested in an instrument that would hold (and increase) it's value, that said, I've never played a better sounding Precision with flats than this....and that includes a 1963 Precision I borrowed for a few gigs. There are probably modern Precisions that are as good, but I've yet to play them. Conversely, I've never found a vintage Jazz bass that I've gelled with, so my very new Lakland 44-94 does that job for me, lovely bass and nicer than any vintage Jazz I've played. Si
  3. I'd go Aguilar Si
  4. Be more like @Bill Si
  5. I'm playing in a Casino......it'll be interesting lol Si
  6. He's talking about a 'production' model as well as some hand built ones. So I reckon $3-4000 for the production, and $6-8000 for the hand built. Not liking the double-cut (which is possibly weird coming from someone with two Laklands (because it is similar)), and not keen on the Mattison take on singlecut. Out of the those two specific builders, I'd prefer to save and save and save for a Fodera. But yes, still sounds like Janek....which says a lot Si
  7. Thunderbolt 2 and 3 use different connections. TB 2 is over Apple display port, and TB3 is over USB-C. As such, the current TB2 to FW800 won't work for you on its own. Si
  8. USB-C to FireWire is not possible without using two dongles (and that's with a 400-800 FireWire cable). As such, you might want to consider, unless you want to spend £60+ on adapters, you might want to consider upgrading your interface along with your computer Apple may introduce a USB-C to FireWire 800 adapter at some point, but wishful thinking possibly. Si
  9. Just to be clear, what connection is on the new laptop? Si
  10. This looks brilliant, love me a 50's Precision! Si
  11. Really really quiet year for me at 39 (including NYE). Here's to next year! Si
  12. I wonder whether having Jon chamber this body quite significantly (to reduce weight of course) would cost the same, more or less than having a new body made. Depends on if there are any other reasons for having a new body made, but may save you the annoyance of having to sell the body or whole bass. If you haven't already, might be worth bringing it up with him. Not that I know what other people want, but I fear you may struggle to sell a 13lbs Precision Si
  13. I'm sure I remember Doug confirming this exact thinking in his podcast interview with SBL. This topic (the original post mainly) basically highlights some peoples lack of understanding of what is sometimes necessary for full-time musicians to undertake, basically to monetise whatever you possibly can. Clearly there is a 'market' for his more esoteric solo performing, at trade shows, clinics etc etc, but as has been mentioned above, it probably represents a tiny percentage of the bass playing he undertakes daily. He's good at it, people will clearly pay him to do it, why wouldn't he play like that. In any case, the whole 'bass should stay in the low end' is the most boring, yet constantly visited, rhetoric going. These people are musicians, that they choose the bass guitar to represent their voice is a moot point. Those players will likely stick to a 'role' for a lot of their musical life, but who cares if they diverge if it's an enjoyable experience for them or someone else?! Si
  14. That's my understanding of how mine works. It was silent through the PA I should mention. Cheers Si
  15. I used mine last Friday for the first time (yup, probably 6months after I got it).....really good, very impressed! Si

    best value DAW

I think every DAW has it's 'intricacies', my most hated Reaper one is it's channel output routing, stupid compared to Logics (and most other DAWs) Si

    best value DAW

Reaper is excellent value for money, and I do use it sometimes, but I still gravitate towards Logic as a more intuitive DAW. Si
  18. I do it loads, for a multitude of reasons, it's just another technique to utilise, same as finger style, slap, pic, etc etc. As has been mentioned, it was actually the original way that Leo Fender assumed people would play the electric bass, why do you think the 'thumb' rest (tug bar) was originally below the strings? Because he envisaged that people would hook their fingers under it, and play with their thumb. Si
  19. SOLD As new, boxed with all packaging, bought as a backup to my other V7, but never used (or even taken out the house). Not much to say really, but it's a SM58 killer, all info here: https://www.seelectronics.com/se-v7-dynamic-microphone/ SOLD Si
