  1. Fair enough , I hope whatever you ended up doing served you well What about just playing in bands for fun , I think the majority of the people on this site are weekend functions players , self funding hobby types , are you involved in that at all ?
  2. I think they missed a marketing trick there Dave , your SH666 suggestion would be a great idea The SH strings are indeed quite bright (I've a blue sparkle model) , but I suspect much of his brightness comes from the rig also I prefer using lower gauge strings on my basses as they work better for me accross the various styles I'm involved with , but I must admit it's a joy to play rock on the Steve Harris bass
  3. Disco , funk and the like have been a big passion of mine since I was a teenager in the mid 80s so I can only know the history of the early days in the 70s from reading and documentaries as I was not there . After watching the clip in the OP I am now not sure what it's really about , most of the stuff he says fits with what I already believe I know , but I am now to believe I should consider this guy part of the history I love so much ? He also mentioned the reason you don't hear him on Galliano & Incognito recording s is because he turned his back on the music industry , but unless I missed it he did not say why ?
  4. Without dismissing this as untrue (I'm sure it's true to you) I find this one of the most interesting comments of the thread I can't believe I'm alone in saying that the first 2 or 3 basses I owned where way below the quality of modern squier and at the time where more than adequate
  5. Looks a like a monster of a bass for the money , good luck
  6. Friend said similar , 4 tickets @ £15 then had to pay £60 for another when his son wanted to join the party . They are very good
  7. After catching up on this thread I now want to see Mark King apply his skills to a Squier and see what it sound like , of course it won't be the same as him using the hardware he has created over the years , but it would be interesting to hear. Just to reconfirm, this thread was not started to prove label snobbery or that anything could be done on a squier but rather to genuinely find out the limitations of the them
  8. It's always mentioned that flats where the only strings available in times gone by so does anyone know what the first albums with rounds on where ?
  9. This is the same for me over recent years with slightly less gigs (1-2 per month was ideal for my lifestyle balance) or at least it was until I got sick My fee varied denpending on type of function gig , and I was always about the fun before the money , though it's nice to have it pay for gear over the course of the years
  10. Yes some songs are half tone out and get put into an easy key for the players , in the bottom level covers band world , 2 good examples are Supersition and Sweet Child. I think the OP here is talking about the singer changing it for their sake , potentially making it more awkward for the players , if transposing doesn't come easily on some songs ?
  11. In contrast to the other thread I started The logical & illogical , the practical and emotional Fire away please
  12. If people can forgive me , the point is nothing more than I'm sick and have spent the last few weeks chatting to various musical friends about the merits of certain basses and guitars , as well as I have been absorbing views on here and elsewhere over the year . At the end of the day it's pointless b*******s that I and some other find interesting Personal choice is removed from the question because I wanted to get a real bottom line view as to any real practical reasons a squier couldn't be used and some have been mentioned Personally over recent years I've mainly gigged Fenders and Musicmans , with the quailty of some squiers around today , I do question why , especially as I've modded the pickups on 2 of my Fenders to personal taste Anyway , I hope at a least a few others find it an interesting bit of fun , certainly not designed to catch anyone out of make issue I'll add that I also love basses that have for want of a better word "mojo" , aged looked , older logos etc , and I've paid the prices for such basses , this is not a "your a snob" if you don't play a squier thread
  13. Thanks informative answer , no hidden meaning as the label snobbery theme is often debated , but I didn't try to weight it to only be about that but all things . For example I thought some who record often might say the pickups or wiring is sub standard for this (I wouldn't know) so I find it interesting that's not happened Hope that makes sense , not sure I'm explaining myself that well ?
  14. One answer for NO has been because of number of frets which has nothing to do with label , I'm pleased because I wanted to see if label aside if there where any genuine reasons why anyone could answer NO 2 others have said NO but not posted a reason I spent my first many years doing gigs on instruments that are way under the quality of today's Squiers and was happy, but I seem spoilt these days and don't need to be
  15. Yep , and I used to have a five string to cope with some songs . Now I use the pitch shifter on my amp , down 1/2 or full tone with the press of a button
  16. I've voted yes , despite owning 4 Fenders , 1 musicman and 2 other basses
  17. Could you perform your current role on a Squier Bass ? Assume you could walk into a shop and buy any current Squier model , have it set up to your liking and go and perform your current gigs or recording duties ? Of course you may prefer something else , but would your sound cause any problems for your band members , engineers or audience ? If you vote No , please explain , but it can't be for any personal reason (unless you physically couldn't play it) only if you think it would bother someone else as mentioned above
  18. Nice one , I played a fretless for a number of years in what should have been fretted bass situations , now your making me miss it , I've not owned one for years good luck with the experiment 😀
  19. For years I had trouble getting to sleep after gigs or playing footy in the evening , my solution was audio dramas , earbuds or sleep phones and I'm off within 10 mins , it seriously worked
  20. Yes as in all professions there will be good and bad
  21. Only you know the real situation , I've lent out my rig and basses (only the dinged ones) to many people over the years , and feel happy helping others get started etc . You do however have to feel good about who you are lending to and their reasons for needing the loan
