1.
Cheers folks...loving the SVT comment by the way Actually you have just opened my eyes a little. Being mostly a six-stringer, and a general Luddite all round, I'm used to quite old fashioned setups (axe-couple of pedals-valve amp-speakers), so my first thought was a combo flexible enough to cover a number of sounds and situations passably, and small enough to chuck in car and not annoy the missis too much in the front room. Perhaps though my new-found conversion to bass might be time to try the Tech 21 route, or something similar. I do like the Bruce / Fraser thang, but I'd like to have a bit of flexibility for a number of styles rather than a superb rock rig that's more a one-trick-pony. Mostly because I only have the one bass and this will be my one amp set up for now, so don't want to be too limited if possible. I'm in Suffolk, by the way!
The only advantage of the SG bass is that it shouldn't be a big stretch for a gtr player.. Sound-wise, I think it will be pretty one dimensional...and I'd be wary of overdriving the sound too much. I was going to offer up an Ampeg PortaFlex solution, but I've heard an Ampeg micro rig and that wasn't nice.. and it wouldn't be versatile, IMV. I guess what I'm saying is ...think again on the SG..??
2.
Perhaps some people would like to believe that, as a measure of quality, the specs are a substitute for being able to hear the cabs. ....................
I'll go with this. What you are 'told' you should be hearing is overwritten by what can actually hear. Some people will have a far far far better educated pair of ears than others... science can't really do anything about that.. IMO.
3.
I agree. I think this is based upon a 'desire to be heard' for some, where I struggle, is the desire to "cut through a mix" comments one often reads, I like my bass to be part of the music - right in the mix...
But too much bass doesn't get you heard in a defined way, IMO, which is why I don't run systems with a lot of bass. If you want to muddy up your sound, and the band mix, for that matter, run humbuckers into a bassey cab and you will really be struggling... I'm almost bemused how people want louder ..and all they have to contend with is a gtr and drums..albeit loud ones. Where you really need to get sorted is if you run against keys and drums ..and if you have a big bass tone, this really is a silly fight to get into, IMO. This doesn't mean your bass sound has to be bass light, but it does need more set-up and thinking about that just trying to out muscle the other guy/guys... You can always add bass, but you can't so easily get rid of it...
4.
Cab one, 400 watts, 8 ohms Cab two, 350 watts, 8 ohms Both from same manufacture. Both same speaker config, just the updated model is rated at 350 watts rather than 400. Now I'm sure I read somewhere that in this circumstance, one of the cabs will get more juice from the amp, in this case a 500 watt Markbass. Can somebody explain it to me please. Bare in mind I make an average 4 year look like Mensa fodder. Cheers, Karl.
Wouldn't worry about it... you have enough in hand over the amp output to load balance ok and you'll never get to run the amp really really hard, I doubt...when the amp will strain before the cabs ..??. I'd just make sure I could hear any stress on the cabs when getting used to the set-up of amps/cabs
5.
almost - a pair of CN112 Never been happier with my sound.
Cool, I'm going to run a pr of S112's with a TH500, but I think I'll want more headroom so the Demeter 800w amp is on my radar.
6.
I agree. I love bass, but too much ruins the tone. I think this is a common eq issue with BF cabs, we're all so used to turning up the Bass EQ to make up for cabs with poor low end response, that when you get a BF with great lows you have to alter your settings. This tends to be a difficult perception shift for some, like 'auto condimenters' who add salt with out even tasting the food first! Some guys want their heads to boost some bass, no matter how much is already signing from the cab! To get an even response from mine I have to actually roll back the bass as there's so much on tap. This is through a GK head, which admittedly boost lows and highs when EQ is set 'flat' at 12 o'clock.
I wouldn't approach like that myself... I'd work it to the sound I wanted to hear with regards how I play .. so each cab would would get its own EQ set-up.. I'd totally expect to change and start from a blank canvas. I wouldn't understand why someone would use the same settings and expect it to work.. but then I also know more than a few people who photo their rig settings so if they lose them, they can restore from a picture... WTF..!!!!
7.
I almost bought one of theirs! I tested multiple combinations. Genz Shuttle 9.2 and Streamliner 900, into Berg HD cabs and Vander Neos. I liked the Shuttle with the Bergs and the Streamliner into the Vanders. I bought the Shuttle & Bergs. Then I got annoyed with the weight of the HD bergs and swapped them for CN series when they came out. They worked very well with both amps, so I got a Streamliner as well. Now the Genz heads are in a cupboard and I'm using a Demeter head. GAS is a vile and all consuming condition!
CN212 and Demeter... ??? way to go..!! :
8. I guess you wouldn't understand his 'science' as it wouldn't always be in a written form that you'd relate to. But I can also see how the groundwork certain people are involved in... studying the results at endless gigs of various size and magnitude in a variety of rooms...to countless hours in the studio... ect etc to know what works with regards to their own playing dynamic counts for a whole lot more. Hell, if you said to me, whose take on all this would I believe... there is no question who would be right, for me..!!! That is real world groundwork to my mind and just as relevant and probably more so. And since VJ's whole career might be down to how well he does that, maybe that counts for more than trying to sell cabs on a bass forum...? It kinda does for me...for sure. You seem quite desperate for people to accept the 'science' when you have no real idea how it works for the specific people involved. I'd expect many a player with a good few thousand hours of decent playing time to know what works for them first and foremost and especially if they are known for their playing and sound and sought after. You can read books and 'understand' and still have an awful set of ears... it is entirely possible and plausible, IME.
9. Always bigger crowds and better stages for me. I can't be doing with playing to 30 people in a pub, tbh.
10.
And another thing! Why do singers seem to think that it is their band????
Because if they are any good, they will be the main selling point of the band..and then they also get to choose the material as they have to sing it... so it easier to let them think it. After a few months you can slap them down...
11. I'd put most Berg cabs pretty much at the top of the tree... As far as the OP goes... 2 super Compacts..?? not on sound or build ( based on the BF cans I've heard which is about the same amount of various Berg cabs..) I couldn't be that specific about which BF cabs and I wouldn't know how much you could blame the bass player's sound either. I suspect that didn't help though. General take is too much bass, not enough tone, but I must admit that is also a common trait with bass players, full stop, to my ears and many cabs can screw that up. But back to the OP, not sure what you'd gain.. the CN212 is not a heavy cab and that would be negated by having to make two trips with 2 cabs...??
12.
Bass Gear in Twyford just outside Reading?
Definitely... just make sure you call them to ask what they will likely have on the date you want to travel. I'm sure they can speak for themselves, but they are basically a higher end shop and vet all the gear they stock so no makeweghts.. That is certainly my impression but maybe Molan could put it better. I wouldn't want to commit them but I barely get away from there in under 4 hrs... If you are travelling, I think Bass Direct is about an hr north from Bass Gear..
13.
That's the other thing - singers that won't learn how to sing inevitably can't be bothered to learn lyrics, either - I hate it when singers don't know the words and then either bluff it through by mumbling, or make up words as they go along. The worst one I've seen is a singer blatantly reading lyrics from a phone at a gig, which looks so bloody bad you can hardly believe it! Lazy, lazy, feckless bastards!!
Music stands..????? My pet thing is that vocals don't have a warm up regime... and I know very very few who do that. The ones that do are deffo a class apart but they don't work the normal gigs as they are in too much demand. I wouldn't use a drummer or gtr etc etc ..who didn't keep his playing regime up so why do Vox think they can do it..??
14. It is a hard skill and at a local level I think singers fall into two zones.. One is that they front the band well, and this goes quite far in connecting with the audience and the other is that they sing well but don't front well. Depending on your definition of outstanding, I think singing very well...with good tone and edge in the voice, is most likely beyond most bands. Around here, the very good vox in a band is very few and far between, certainly in pub bands, and is sometimes almost an afterthought. Listening to the quality of the P.A is a case in point here. The only thing I would do is emphasize to the vox that pitch is very important to your band and if you've rejected anyone, then tell them why so they can go and work on it.. I'd throw out the 'stat' that around here, 75% of the bands have vocals that are lacking...but I'd include in that figure singers that don't know the extent of their range and sing in tune until they try and go for notes they can't get. So, know your limits as a good vox will not hit bum notes as they should know they can't reach it. That is just basic ears, IMO. Popular around here, good band, dodgy vox..and it is often pretty true. I'm not sure what lessons would do to improve this as I'm sure they don't sing off pitch on purpose. However, I do think a lot of singers should go for lessons if only to help preserve what they've got for longer. Most singers that have been singing for 20 years or so, have lost at least a tone in range..??
15. Why should it even be a problem?
16. Since I've rented out a few rigs of late, they can pay me rig rental and I'll bass tech it. If they can't afford that, then the bass players can try and convince me that I'd want to do them a favour. If that works, then fine, but them not having the wherewithall to do a gig is not my problem unless they've paid me for the service. I wouldn't take kindly to assumptions that I will lend a rig... but if I like them, I might even offer..? but I'd also be on hand in case anything went wrong. One thing that would flag, is if the guy had a pedal board and I didn't like his sound in the sound check...? as that might point to the guy having poor or even no ears so I'm not going to trust them just sticking what ever signal and level they feel like into the amp..?? Basically, if I can't be side stage to deal with these issues, I'd pack it all down.
17. Full... I have a lot left on the bass in terms of mid sweep and bass boost but really want to avoid that as they affect the tone too much...so a between the songs type thing. Not a fan of going back to the amp, and when I do, that is normally because someone else has upped their level.
18. Duracell.... they last a year or so, but I generally change them when I think they've done a decent stint so 6 months or so.
19. New speakers are going to cost you a minimum of £200, I'd say...plus wood etc, plus aggro.. Could you not buy a decent 410 with that and the money you'd get for the 115..? Not sure the cab will fit 4x12's in any sense, tbh
20. Depends how hard the pot can run...I'd always go half to 3/4...and hope the levels on the desk were more 'clinical'..assuming the desk is quality.
21. Goal for a drummer is good solid time and good sound. They have to get that as soon as possible. Time is easy, sound is not... whereas it should be the other way round, you'd think. Lessons to 'crack' both... and get a teacher that can walk them through 'counting' ...
22. Would want to see it as the whole point of Roqsolid is that they are functional and cheap. That doesn't put them in the same league as offerings by Aguilar or Berg, for example. but then those might be £70 plus £'s.. If you could see them, and more importantly feel how padded they are, you could make a decision.
23. I probably wouldn't myself... I'd set it at half, unless it was really obvious that that level was too low. But that is a general position I'd take...rather than it being this model specific.
24. Depends how many channels you use and depends on how many bands get to use it..?? Most consistent users have a system and would use the same channels anyway..?
25.
I have a trace elliot ah600 (pre Gibson) it has two speaker outputs on the back both a at 4ohms. First question would be if I powered one cab from one output would I be getting 300w @ 4ohms or the full 600w @ 4ohms? If it's 300w each side then if I used a two 1/4 inch jacks to one speak on cable and took both loads would this still be 4ohms or would it go down to 2ohms? My cab is 1000w @ 4ohms
You can't do that.... and shouldn't and don't need to anyway, You have 600w out into 4... you have a 1000w cab at 4.. your amp will deliver its full power off one output socket..simple. No point splitting the signal as it is still a mono signal out
