John Entwistle isolated bass - Won't Get Fooled Again
JTUK replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
He basically plays the same thing every time ..so not much of a study. His right hand is very good..his left hand is pretty much a clamp and pretty basic. But... in that clip...it is his choice of fills that totally destroys it. Just as well most of them would be 'mixed' out... but as a study, it is not watchable. Having said that..fans will love it warts and all..but boy..are there some warts.. IMHO.. Suffice to say, was never a fan... but what he and Moon had you couldn't teach.. but whether you'd want to or rather, should, is another thing..!! -
I'd say TH500 and 2 xTKS S112's will do most gigs. If you can't get a very good sound out of that, then don't look at the amps and cabs. The cabs are very versatile...and can cope with a TH or Demeter and I'd say they are pretty far apart in tone goals. As for for clean and flat etc etc ..I think it is largely hogwash and not really an end goal at all..especially when you consider the rest of the chain people hook up it with. I think most people's problems with sound is what they put into the amp/cab in the first place... I have 2 amps that I currently use... a TH500, A DB750 and a Demeter and I can get the same sort of sound out of all of them...it is how it gets delivered that is the real gamechanger, IMO.

Can't listen to it... Awful. Never liked Entwhistle or Moon for that matter... but I can listen to them as a band. -
How to stop "on stage" volume from the bass bins
JTUK replied to largo's topic in General Discussion
This is not a typical solution but depending on where you expect to play most of the time. We had 12" subs for the pub and small halls and then we knew our P.A would run out of steam so we'd have to hire in and price for that anyway. The advantage of this was the 12" were smaller and manageable would add depth without the other overhead that bigger 15's and 18's would do. We couldn't carry ..and neither did we want to, the 15/18's anyway. So, as always, be reasonable and thoughtful with your expectations. For Marquee weddings, we were looking to hire in anyway... so £300 or so for a manned/crewed/trucked P.A was considered a worthwhile cost. -
Good luck.

We'd like to book your band...but...(song requests)
JTUK replied to AndyTravis's topic in General Discussion
Have been approached for a wedding gig in February, all good. But then a list of requests (not songs, but artists - do you know any...) has come through, all really different, some similar to our existing set, some we already do and some we'll be able to pick up quickly. But the odd bit isn't the songs or artists' - We've been asked to reinterpret them in a funk style. While it's not hard to do, I see it as sort of re writing 25-30 songs (some of which we'll have to learn anyway) All for our standard wedding gig fee. Am I being unreasonable feeling like we should say normal set, normal price, reworked set - reworked price. Or, should I slap everything in octaves and make the guitarist play everything with a wah on it - cheeky way out.
No, no, and NO. These people don't know what they want as they've seen you and want you to re-do the set in another style.. I'd tell them, you've seen us, and want to book us. We do what we do...or go and book someone else. -
How to stop "on stage" volume from the bass bins
JTUK replied to largo's topic in General Discussion
Playing in a 5-piece wedding band I often find that the "bleed" from our bass bins is so loud that I can barely hear myself on stage. I know one cure is to turn up & maybe even turn the subs down but it's not just me but the overall "bass" of the kick drum, keyboard left hand etc. I then end up with a very middy tone on stage just to hear myself a little. Anyway, these are powered bass bins a pair of DB Sub 15d cabs so not cheap rubbish! Any suggestions? Short of different subs, I wondered if a soundproof heavy duty blanket draped over the back of the bins would help? Might overheat the amp though. Answers on a postcard.
Back off the bass signals into the subs...so that is kick, bass and keys. Use backline. Of course, it shouldn't really be this way but your subs sound too much for the room. Sub gets everywhere so less is better. This is why a lot of circuit bands have huge sub sounds... and I think engrs get carried away with being able to dominate the room. Turn down the bass EQ on the subs... -
Please help - I play in a 5 piece covers band with 2 guitars, vox, drums. I love playing in the band but there is a huge problem developing for me sound wise - the singer is forever asking me to turn down, even when I can already hardly hear myself over the drums and guitars and I'm considering turning up! This really pisses me off - if I can't hear myself I find I naturally work my right hand harder to try and be heard - this morning after last night's gig my fingers are red raw. I'm seriously considering quitting because there's no pleasure in it for me getting on stage playing a bass and hardly hearing the result. I have lots of respect for the singers views - he's experienced and his views on sound are often really insightful - this makes it worse. But I do think he's over reacting a bit maybe because a couple of times when the guitarists have got their sound wrong, he's not been able to pick up the note and ended up singing off key, because he can only hear bass and drums. As we all know, the guitars cut through everything and they've recently reigned themselves in a bit - this could be contributing to the problem. Still hear them loud and clear tho! I'm not sure, but I think I just need to get my sound right I think so it cuts through without sounding too boomy maybe? I dunno. I have a Jazz bass with a TC RH450 driving the 2 x 8" speakers in a TC BG250 208 and a 1 x 15" Trace Elliot cab. I'm changing this for a TC RS112 asap. I've been dicking about with the RH450 settings for weeks but with no real joy. I boost the bass and cut the highs a small amount, low gain and tubetone, middling amount of compression but I'm pretty clueless about that tbh. ANY experience shared, advice guidance etc VERY gratefully received. #Thanks
Doesn't make any sense, I'm afarid... you are asked to turn down to the point you can't hear and this makes you play harder to be heard..so what does that achieve... you've crept up to the same volume ..?? Gtrs turn down and he can't pitch because all he can hear is bass and drums..?? Does this guy know mwhat he wants...or can hear. Sounds like shot hearing to me. Either work it out so you are all happy and understand what the end goal is soundwise or move on.
I always wanted an Aguilar TH800 which goes to 2 ohms. This might be it.
Would be very interesting indeed.

We make it clear when we will pack up... and we factor that into the fee...

Open Mic Nights – Huh? – What Are They Good For?
JTUK replied to anaxcrosswords's topic in General Discussion
Networking................. It is all about blagging a gig, showing your face, bigging it up if you need to... and the Landlord filling his bar on an off night. -
Very apply named. Assume he doesn't play like that all the time..??
-
You're going to need two... and that assumes you can get away with a 210 on a gig, which is tenuous. I'm guessing the main use will be a Double bass, quiet jazzer
-
Wow, seriously...?? You've got to be kidding..

Is it normal for old strings to go out of tune?
JTUK replied to jazzyvee's topic in General Discussion
I'll cut to a max of 3 winds.... don't want any of that 'silk' nonsense either. -
I used one on a stage and really really wasn't looking forward it. In that respect we shouldn't have taken the gig, but it turned out ok... A bit one dimensional but I got it to sound pretty good and it did the gig. If I was doing the same gig again... and I really don't like the load in so it is the onstage rig or nothing, ...IF I wanted to do the gig, the Ashdown 210 combo would be ok.
In terms of promotion and getting new people on board with your music? Sure, fans do that. But fans also like to interact with the band, that's why bands and artists do things like Reddit "Ask Me Anything", they're an open opportunity for fans to ask a question, and potentially have them answered, and they're very popular. Bands should probably work out a way to bring a small slice of that into every social media post, shouldn't they?
Well, you don't ignore their posts too often.... but the idea is that the last gig got so many comments that the people that missed registered it as a gig they unfortunately missed so often say see you at the next one. And this creates the buzz that is needed. Plus ppl talk outside of FB so musos will know you've had a good gig and will ask you about it. They like to know who is hot and doing well....and will check you out... IF, there isn't typical musician jealousy/envy in the equation. Pubs and LL's talk as well, so it is easy to create a buzz.... the hardest thing is to maintain it... which means you don't flog it to death, and let ppl get bored and move on..
Hi BCers, I'm trying to get the sound from my amp/cab to match that of the pre DI sound, however there always seems to be the baked in sound of the amp present through the cab that isn't in the clean DI sound. Is there any way to match these sounds, or is the only way to ditch the amp altogether and use a decent DI and monitor, or iem? I've found this to be the case FOR ME with any amp that I've owned, and not just the stuff I have at the moment, so I don't think it's my Amps/cabs (even though they're not particularly good ones). Bottom line, I want a clean flat sound that I can eq from just the bass, and not the baked in sound from the amp (with every eq control set at neither cut or boost). A problem too far??? Cheers Pete :-)
Depends how good your DI is.... depends how much the cab has shaped the sound...depends on post or pre options, if you have them. TBH, I think cheap crappy DI's are a waste of time... and probably a lot of manufacturers feel the same as well..so they aren't likely to be great on cheaper amps. If you want a cab sound...then take the cab signal..i,e close mic it... but this means the PA engr needs to work harder and have probably two signals in..and he might not have room on the desk..and so the default signal will likely end up being the DI box anyway. If you are doing mulit bills with 15min turnarounds...you really can't get into this sort of territory..it is more for a dedicated engr task, IMO. Additionally, the Engr might want a clean signal and cabs might not the best way to get that...so it depends how much the Engr is going to or be willing to indulge you. Just my 2p..

Looking to downsize from Ampeg rig but not sure what to buy
JTUK replied to sPiKi's topic in Amps and Cabs
Always pay attention to your specs though Alex - and the fact that your cabs are very loud in comparison to the same amp settings when connected to other similar cabs seems to bear that out. I can`t imagine not using Barefaced cabs now, even if there were other cabs of the same weight/power.
Depends what you are driving them with tho.... if a cab requires a LOT of watts in... or a match up with a very powerful amp, how can this point to efficiency..? If a cab takes a lot of bass, and/or needs a lot of bass, that is going to drain the amp. And if that amp is Class D to boot...?? Minefields to navigated all over...IMO. This is why I prefer conventional cabs, myself....but then there are good and bad of them. as well. -
But I'm not talking about 24/7 social media. I'm talking about having a following and keeping that following informed and engaged. Isn't it perfectly manageable to be writing, recording, and gigging, and also post a picture on Instagram, a post on Facebook, and perhaps a short Periscope of what's going on?
I'll post an event and invite friends...and if the venue has a page, I might post there. People will post on these pages and you get a little flow going... This is more than enough to get 20-30 ppl to a pub and if the pub has its own fan base, then 60 odd ppl make that evening, pretty much. I may give the event a last shout ....as I did on band hol monday as we only took the gig sunday Lunchtime. As it happens,we had a great turn out and great gig. For ticket gigs, you need to operating and co-ordinating at a different level over a longer period of time. But...the idea is that the gig sells itself...you are just needing to remind ppl of it.

I run my FB page for music so most of my friends are interested in what we do musically. I don't flog it to death, IMO... but if I tell them I've got a good gig, they trust me to tell it like it is. By the same token, I might have a dep or two and they enquire about it and I'll tell them maybe it isn't the band for them. If I don't rate it much, I'm not selling it, tbh. By and large they trust me to advise them of good gigs and if I am excited about a gig, then it is a fair bet that they should be..

Is it normal for old strings to go out of tune?
JTUK replied to jazzyvee's topic in General Discussion
My Rounds are pretty unbearable from about 6 weeks on... if I use good core strings I can get a few good cleans out of them but they do have a useful end of life, IMO. That is the time to throw them away. You could try and restring them but I think they are likely shot. FWIW, I have a theory that some string winders may have downgraded their metal these last few years.and this is more noticeable on Rounds as the strings are likely to need to be cleaned and restrung a good few times. I've found that the best strings might be able to cope with this about 5 times and then time for the recycle bin -

I have a Demeter and a TH500 and the Demeter outclasses the TH by some degree...but you might still prefer the tone of the TH500. I drove a Demeter pretty hard and it broke up to quite an alarming degree. That is 800w rated. A few more gigs and I'll sort it and the power stage is far better, IMO, than the normal class D's... I am normally not very impressed with Class D...I wonder if the Demeter will pursuade me..?? -
Its funny.... one of the first bands around these parts to start doing this on the local pub circuit who have a large following do this track but basically they use a backing track with all the 'Doo Doo' parts and brass and extra vocals.... I was shot down on a local Facebook page for saying that its was cheeky doing it this way. We do it in my band with the keys player playing all the parts... works well
I'd have backed you up on that..... I really don't get why it is so great for a band...if the core parts they do and which makes the song is a sequence backing track. At a local level, if you can't play it, you can't play it.... and even worse if you've ripped the sample from someone else rather than constructed it yourself.. That is getting into the realms of VERY silly, IMO..
