You'll have to excuse my ignorance here as this genre is most certainly not my cup of tea. Are these songs generally looked at in the same light as all the 'rock cover band' standards that all pub audiences love but most folks on here recoil at the very mention of, dakota, sex on fire, mustang sally etc? The way the Jazz standards have been described above makes them seem like they're the same old same old that every other jazz band churns out. Not looking to cause trouble, genuinely interested in how they are regarded.
Well, there is 'jazz' and 'jazz' so depending on your 'jazz' gig depends on what standards are wheeled out. The jazz pad might include instrumentals of pop standards but played in the 'jazz' format which is verse, chorus, m8 etc etc ..and solos or 'rounds' of the whole band line-up. Or they might mean Trad..which often stands alone with the type of material they'll cover. Or they might mean Miles and Coltrane....or bits of all those jazz 'periods'

Does one become conditioned to a certain sized speaker
So essentially you favour 10s and 12s. If your comment about 15s is aimed at a certain company who produce lightweight bass cabs, you'll find that their entire range across three series currently consist entirely of cabs based on 10- and 12- inch drivers. Not a 15 in sight. How do you stand on the 'size' issue, btw? Do you think driver size makes a difference to tone?
In terms of attack yes.. and I prefer that typically, they aren't bass booming boxes..but I also think that a boomy bass can also be the problem of the the signal in. And that opens another can of worms. -
Depends on your market...you might be doing 'Nightingale', Valentine etc etc ....or something a bit more 'rad'.. Depends who you are playing for and the BL's line-up. A decent BL leader will prorbaly have a book of hundreds of tunes and a short stint out with them will take you through a wealth of 'jazz standards'

I went from Berg AE112's to TKS S112's. We reviewed the CN112 in the 'test' and my feeling prior to that test was that the 'upgrade' from AE to CN wasn't worth it, since I already had AE's.. I did like the CN's tho but was VERY interested in a ceramic option...and I bought them.
Just out of interest, why do you believe this statement to be true? It is obvious from this and other threads elsewhere that some people think that speaker size has no bearing on tone - and that other people think speaker size definitely has a bearing on tone. Clearly both these statements can't be true. I know which I think is correct, but I don't have enough knowledge of physics or electronics or bass cab construction to make a decision about which statement is actually correct, so in the end I can only go by what I read on teh internetz. Meanwhile, I'm going to judge bass cabs on a cab-by-cab basis and go with the one I like the sound of in a live band situation, regardless of speaker size and regardless of how many speakers are in the cab. Oh wait, I did that a year ago. As you were.
You could apply that to many many people and some of them post here. But after a while, people will have tried a load of stuff and built their own references so if someone stands up in an room and screams loud and clear that their way is right... and some of those people just don't agree as the final arbiter is the sonic test...and baring in mind, this room may well have a few 'experts' of their own. As far as cabs go... I know which ones I like. I too would have a 610/810 by choice..so 10's for me. Doesn't stop me using 12's either. But if you only made 15"s...then I could see why you may have been vocal about 15's..if you wanted to sell them, for example -
Jamiroquai's catalog are a study into a technique genre or style in itself. Just like Chic's was.. Youtube them and work through them. Required study, IMO.
Huh? Can you please explain the Queen's English to this dense, still half asleep Yank?
You get the sound right at low level...you've worked out what settings to use at home etc... and they the sound goes completely to pot when you turn it up. Sometimes, I think the filters some amps have don't work or stay the same with the volume going up ..??? so you as well have not bothered. but generally they sound strained at volume and when played hard. I have to have the pre and master on around 1 and 1... with the way I play... and this is working the amp hard, it seems. The reason I will sell my TH is because I have it running at 1 and 1 and it isn't loud enough....hence my thoughts about a TH800 post..
-
Jeez, Lozz... you're brave posting that. FWIW, A couple of guys round here ........who do indeed know better, IMO... wheel out Schroeders and the lightweight thing is definitely the thing...but they aren't the sort of guys that would go light for lights sake. I don't know if they use them as their touring rig, altho I suspect one might. I'll ask next time. I wouldn't say I'm knocked out with their sound..as opposed to their playing... but they do the job well enough.
The Demeter 800 amps use the same power module as the TH500, so it would be interesting to know what is different in the implementations.
So they say, but the Demeter is a much better balanced amp... but it costs twice as much, so..?? I think both are good sound wise but for me, the TH doesn't amp up well... which is a common thing with the lightweight amos, IMO. Need more time with the Demeter...
-
I use a TH, and I'll probably keep it as a backup or door stop or whatever but I don't need much EQ so I don't colour things much. I know that sounds a bit odd but I am indeed looking or listening to the back end stage of the amp, and this is what I don't totally love about the TH. I don't much like it on quite a few of the other lightweights amps I've used either, tbh. They have the volumes but no guts. It is a bit harsh, and they are useable up to a point but I'm thinking what gig can I use this on...and it is not a default amp. If you think you want more tonal options than the TH..then I don't think the 3 pro is going to be it as the EQ is pretty clumsy. But..as always... if it works it works but again, from a sample round here of them in use... they certainly aren't the epitome of sophistication....and don't appeal to that sort of player anyway. Maybe the power stage is the best thing about it. I'd say the SVT suffers from the same lack of tone options but the awesome power stage rescues it... or makes it irrelevent. I think I've gone off graphics like the Ampeg one or the old GP 7 as by the very nature of the design they are too 'peaky' IMO.

I've used the TH500, have the pedal and also a DB750 so I like the Aguilar thing but the TH500 is a tad short for me. Soundwise it is great but I'd like more volume. A TH800 would be very interesting and useful. I'm currently using a Demeter to do that gig... Depends what you mean by 'sweeten up' but I think a 3 Pro is even more basic...- I hate the graphic and the 5 point switch and there isn't much left, IMO. Very popular around here but not a good sound I'm hearing so I think the popularity is because of the 'iconic' name and because they think it is cheap SVT option. I don't think it is... tbh.
-
Low and light...the tension may be a tad soft but there you go. Same strings and gauges on all and I work on the bass being a backup so are set-up the same, rather than something different. I do what I do..nothing much changes, altho I tend to be quite a seat of the pants player.

Putting aside how loud you ought or need to be and concentrating on will a 500w class D into 8ohms be enough against the 2 gtrs, I'd be pretty confident in saying 'no chance' myself. Borrow one for the rehearsal to see...
-
If everything is great then its great but I do notice sound very quickly at gigs...and then you look at what is causing it..if you are so bothered. I tend to think people are looking in the wrong place most of the time and they think gear alone can fix it. I'm not a huge lover of Ampeg myself but I think I can make it sound good to my ears and like me...then you look at the very small margins that all add up. I've used a lot of stuff that I don't prefer and wouldn't buy and not a lot of it has sounded really bad.. Having said that, there are some very cheap and nasty things out there and if you can't get a clean close sound out of it, you should bin it. Other people might not ask the same questions of it and it can suit their purposes fine. For example..if you want everything to be heard, you are needing something completely different from a guy who wants an underpinning rumble of a sound.
-
Personally, I'm thinking you'll have issues with 500w class D... and I think you need to borrow one and demo it on the gig in context to know. The real issue, IMO, is whether you need a heavyweight sound for the gigs you do. If you are doing most gigs without FOH support, some amps, and the big blocks in particular, are too much..and that is where a class D is useful. IMO. There are IME, some gigs a big block can't or shouldn't do, and likewise, there are some a Class D can't or shouldn't either.... in an ideal world and IMO.

I've no idea about the weights of my basses, tbh... and I wouldn't say I'm oblivious or can afford to be, about all things heavy. I think it is far more about the moving and twisting which is why I would struggle with loads in etc... but I do have two rigs for that. One is worth the weight for the tone... but only at certain load-ins...and the other is a quest to get close to that with the compromises that I've come across. It depends where you make your compromises and for me... I wouldn't rule out a great sounding bass over a lb or two. I wouldn't be taking 3 set gigs either tbh.. YMMV
I don't quite understand a couple of these recent comments. I don't mind admitting my frame is on the large side, and for quite a few years now, when doing a gig with a 9lb bass, I start to struggle during the second set. If I use a 7lb bass, I have no problems at all. It's not complicated...
It is a general comment as I've no idea who is overweight and to what degree. But IMO.. and as one who has prolapsed disks, these things can be managed, and the first start should be to have an excercise regime to keep the back in reasonable mobile order to maintain core. Taking off a beer gut would help the core massively, IMO. As above, body weight loss would be the first thing, with a good core, and altho a lb off a bass may help the shoulders more than anything else, taking the strain off your back should start with a lack of a gut. THAT isn't complicated either
They've just uploaded a vid of a shortscale Elwood...
I shouldn't like this..as don't want maple with black blocks, but the body colour saves it...and some. I'd like to see one close and play it. I like the 19mm spacing and the active options..

Does one become conditioned to a certain sized speaker
There is a bit of a myth on Basschat about the sound of different speaker sizes. That size doesn't matter. It can do and often does but it is possible to get round this. Speaker design is about choosing compromises. You can make a 10 go deep but you will have to compromise other things. Manufacturers tend to come up with similar solutions so their offerings tend to sound similar to each other, but they don't have to. One particular manufacturer on here has said you shouldn't make assumptions about sound based on size alone, and that is fair if you set out to do something different. It's a long way from this to say that size has no effect on sound.
That is the disadvantage of having people use this place to sell their product....it is a fine line between genuine advice or forum presense to pimp your stuff. But, there is a very disernable difference in my 10's and 12"...and I'd say that current difference is typical of modern cabs and the ones I've tried. -
I think he means 'fat'?
Yep.... if you are fat and you have back problems, you might want to start closer to home to hep your back problems. 2st in the wrong place is REALLY not going to help....IMO

Heard it this morning and thought it was quite poor... doesn't exactly sell the film either. Written in 20 mins...?? and sounds like it.

Another J5 st to complement my current 2.
