1. Personally hate silks on strings... as when I try and clean them...not that a string maker wants to read this, they get very untidy. IMO. The only possible reason to have them is to ID batches of different makers strings but even then, I'd tie them all off in sets anyway.
2. Or 3 down... and in on the 5 and a swinger.. It teaches you to be on your toes and be confident that you can make the track work even though you haven't a clue to the drum part until the first bar.. As with depping and busking..the trick is not have people realise this is the first time you've even heard of the track...let alone know it. It is good building blocks as you'd be surprised how many bass players in gigging bands don't recognise very well used patterns...and therefore can't busk it without someone telling them what the next chord is... even 12 bars (1,4,5)
3. The house band members usually need to be able to play most things...but most people's band sets are house band sets...for obvious reasons. Depends who the bandleader is...you should certainly know a few blues styles and be able to swing and shuffle.
4.
All good stuff, thank you all. So am I right in thinking I don't need to supply a bass (other than for my own use) ? Les
You need to make it a rule as I'd say it might be expected by some. Personally, I don't use the house bass, but plenty might expect to. You don't say how much you are asking to be paid... but since you are providing the entertainment for the evening or the ability to ...then the Pub should pay a house band fee. Too many LL's might get the idea this is a cheapo music night option on a 'down night' and if these things are going to be a success...then they need to be something people will go out and see, so the band needs to be able to be decent..
5. Understand... If it hasn't cost anything then ok.. For me, this is what Facebook excels at..for the moment. I have a new band that does parties but since it is all word of mouth, I'm not going to admin a website.
6. Opened up 2 pages for a very fleeting look...and the thing that screamed out ...was pub pub. Pub bands are fine... but you are then caught between the purpose and the cost of the website. I don't think pub bands can really justify a good website in terms of cost... and to get a worthwhile site you'll need GOOD content which is not that easy or cheap to come by. If anyone is looking at your band for a party..and therefore pay better money, they aren't going to do it from that website, IMO... Unknown contacts who search and find this site will pass on it almost straight away, IMO....but the catch 22 is can you justify to spend £1k or so to do the job? The question about what the purpose is in the post above...is most relevant. The effort isn't so bad... but depends what you want to achieve.and how cost effective it is.
7.
JTUK - In what way do you see 12" speakers as a compromise? I'm not quite sure what aspect you're getting at, but I'm ready to be edumacated!
I think they build them to sit between a typcal 15 and 10's... but if I compare my 12"s and I've had a few incarnations... I find..and like.. that the 12's are more bass orientated... for certain gigs... but for control I prefer the 10's. The 10 stack does not lack a full sound by any stretch but the 12's fill just a bit more. This ISN'T always what you want. Adding bass isn't a problem, wiping it off, definitely is. If I had the gig for it, I'd have an 810...but my compomise rigs are a mix is 12 and 10's... and I'm perfectly happy with that and not looking for anything else, but the 10's have it for me.
8.
The Dukes Of September. . . back in 1991 theses guys had a band called the New York Rock And Soul Review. There's a live CD, which I have.
Wasn't there a CBS Orchestra band as well....featuring the likes of Phoebe Snow? I have that tape
9. 5 years is enough.....
10. I don't really get 'perfect renditions' of tracks..and just as that applies to Cover's bands, it applies to Tributes as well. Would have to see/hear it in context The girls from the Floyd tribute do well.... not listening to the band atm...which if you were being hyper critical, sound quite bland..?? which is the problem you get you you go for all style over substance type gigs..? I think I rather pay to see what makes Gilmour special rather than someone trying to just sound like Gilmour and if that ship has sailed...then let it go.
11. Not really sure it matter as long as it has enough............ If you turn your amp up to half way on the dial..what does that equate to..?? who knows.. so as long as you still have decent sound on the amp to spare you'll be ok. I'd be more interested in whether the amp delivered the sound I wanted to hear... right the way thru the range but some amps sound ok..until a certain point and then get quite harmonically distorted or ugly sounding. Two of the best amps I've used quite recently that 'amp' up very well have been the TF550-B and the DB750..but then they are top end amps. IMO.
12. LIke him or not, Berlin is a monster player who can indeed hold a groove. Whilst he may not be known as a groove player... you only have to listen a tad to know he has that as well. He was well known and well used in the NY session scene and you don't do that if all you have is pyro
13. Good luck then.. I wouldn't take it anywhere near a gig tbh.
14. You could put it thru anything but I wouldn't pay out for anything extra. Low powered amp so you aren't going to get any volume out of it, IMO.
15.
Being brought in by Greene King , across the board . There's info on what people think on the FB group - "Gigs for musicians to avoid" - just scroll down and you'll find it . A local GK venue to us is bringing it in from next year , and to be honest , no one want to be the one who gives out their info . I agree , if I was doing function work again , I'd be above board , but not for one pub gig a month , I do now (£45 in my hand) We're seriously considering binning our gigs there for next year - bollocks to 'em
Which what most bands will do... I can see both sides to it... but for possibly £200 p.a gross..??
16. Got quite interesting from about 1:05 for 15 secs or so..and repeats... but not for me.
17. I would hope that either bass is capable of being very good and that they could do that consistantly. How you tell which is best, I don't know, but you might find out which is best from the ones you try. As good as some makers can be.... some are going to work better than others altho with prestige names, you hope/expect that the average ones are few and far between.
18. I use a custom Tapered 118 B and it sounds and feels great. I can slap or double thumb a line on the double B and it sits and sounds very well with the rest of the strings. The bass takes the credit here though, IMO, and whilst good string are required.. the bass and the build is key. Great bass plus poor string= ok-ish Poor bass, great string and you'll be lucky to get to 'ok-ish' You really have to get out there and hear and play the bass you want to buy. This applies to any bass, IMO... but for a bass with a low B. ...to the power of 10. IME.
19. Just goes to show that those 10,000 hrs can go nowhere and that a good player needs more than practice to amount to anything. If you haven't got good ears...then everything else matters not a bean.
20. I think the problem goes waaay deeper than whatever cab you use...(my theory, without having heard you) but your quick fix may be in a cab, upto a point.
21. Agree about the Redhead... lot of combo for the money.
22.
Thanks guys. I have decided that lightweight is the way to go. Markbass looks to be the likely choice but I'm not 100% decided. Should I stick with my idea of a 15 and a 2x10? Does the little mark 2 do the job or are there better heads out there? Should I be looking at other brands,as markbass seems to have as many negative opinions as they do positive.
I've always liked the MB 102 combo... and I'd stick the same type of 210 underneath that. Admittedly, you could be getting close to £1000 for that rig...but it should outlast you. Seperates would probably be more expensive anyway... unless you did something like a TH500 for £400 and a 212...which would probably be the same sort of end price..??
23. Jeez Pete, That sounds one ugly time. Obviously knew you were having problems with the band..as you took a 'break' from it...but can understand it all now. I also kind of get that some people pursue a destructive course (my words) and it is very very hard to break that. A friend of mine is there atm. Glad you are back... and hope you are looking onwards. All the best
24. I wouldn't buy them as first choice... they are ok. I'm not a fan of their tension...XL Pro steels, and I think they occupy the middle ground of strings when I tested a whole bumch of brands a few years back.
25. He's got it all
