Woes of a flobby B - anything that can improve the situation?
JTUK replied to Naetharu's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd be more worried about the actual tone of the B and how defined it is.... so tension should be an easier fix... But there might be a reason for 130... as the bass can't cope . I'd be thinking that the bass isn't even going to do it...and a 5 is really defined by the B' ...and not much point in them if they don't work Look and save for a better bass... but there is no garuantee that a reasonable hike in the budget will achieve anything. I'd goes as far as to say that you are going to have a long search or be very lucky...you can pay £1500 and still get a B that sucks.. -
It isn't about what we like, The punters love it so if the singer is up to the task it is a great song to learn. It also shows what a good musician Duff is Great inventive supporting counter melodies driving the song to where it needs to go on every twist and turn. I think it is a classic bass line and every bit as good as the guitar part above.
I'd have a general problem with this... so no, I wouldn't be doing songs just because we'd be instantly 'popular' by playing the same standards as half the circuit.. I'd want at least, a good spin on it.. that set us apart from everyone else.... Personally..

I'd be more worried about that actual choice from your bandmates tbh.. Such an old cliched song that if you can't do anything with it...best left alone. And since you don't sound like you fancy the song at all... I doubt it would work and what would worry me about that, is if the band don't notice..??

For me, it goes deeper than that. My basic set-up is pretty neutral on the amp... I'm not much bothered about what that actual means frequency-wise as I know which ones are helpful and which ones aren't... But I've also put an awful lot of time into my playing so solo parts sound nice..to my ears. so my sound doesn't need a lot of EQ'ing...and certainly not fighting it. It doesn't need compression and it doesn't need much set-up. I can go from home set-up to gig and all that changes is the master. I don't get problems from the room..can't recall the last time that happened and I don't get directions from sound men...so it is not extreme for them and they don't need a lot of work on it....if they have balanced their P.A and know what they are doing. I'd say the end sound is the same as the acoustic sound or ball park..but louder and with one or two bits that are peakier.. I'd start from a clean position in regards to the initial signal and dull it down to suit. You can't do it the other way round without running into all sorts of unwanted fights and I'd suggest the latter is why a a lot of guys have never-ending problems with sound.

I'd go Newtone Platinums. Nice sharp tone but not too zingey out the pack. The advantage there is that the tail off from when the strings go off is not so dramatic. 6 months is throwing me a bit tho...as I can't see a Round string lasting that long. It sounds to me...from this distance...that there is a LOT of presense in the equation.. I find I can't even begin to use the presense on my East pre's..and this from someone who likes it a bit lively...plus I'll back the tweeter off to 50% open max... My strings, for my tastes, last 6 weeks max...before I clean them and this is another plus with Newtone...they'll clean up 3 or so times..which was what the old DR's used to be capable off.
-
Not sure I would..I've used the P.A's, I'd start at the pre amp first but assuming money is no object then neither would time be, so I'd be demo'ing a whole load of stuff over a period. I wouldn't have a combo either... and I'd have my own crew/tech team ...
You've asked him to change and he won't. You want a magic wand, but there isn't one. It doesn't matter if he's the best guitarist in the world, if he sounds so bad that he's making the audience wince then all of his good points are nullified. Why would any audience go to see your band when they can hear the problem and are saying things like that?
Further to this, I don't believe good players sound bad as that is all part of the equation, Of course, there is a subjective element to this... but he seems is be in a very small minority of one..? And if one person is pulling down the rest of the band, then I'm surprised anyone tolerates it. It is clear what the consensus is...and if you wont fix it, you are left moaning about it... indefinitely. Can't see the point of that...better things to waste time on, IMV

Sorry if this question has been done to death, but.....
JTUK replied to Painy's topic in Amps and Cabs
I don't think you need the cabs right up by your ears either.. I never stack vertically... although the 210 rig will sit higher than the 2x12 naturally. If people can't hear the bass... I wouldn't start by putting the 'stack' right in my ear...as the issue is deeper, IMO. It is the same as the 'mids' conundrum but maybe the remedial work required is something people don't fancy.. 10's V 12's...typically, 12's are more the compromise, IMO but you shouldn'r suffer too badly from it. -
I have both, amongst others, so I don't need to care.

I use both. My lightweight rig is class D and 2x112's... and they are ceramic chassis weighing 10kgs. Work fine. So my decision is full beans rig...I pick the speakers that work for me the best.. For lightweight rig..and an alternative, weight is the lead factor...but not by much..they still sound very good, IMO, which is why I researched them and ended up with the ones I did... If I didn't have the heavier rig to compare, I'd be less aware of the difference and would be happy with the compromise. -
Was that the sound of a can of worms opening..?
No, I think they have a place in smaller places. Some big blocks are too mmuch for some gigs... just as Class D aren't enough..IMO. So, in the context of this thread...pertinent, IMO.
-
Going back to a 4 would make no sense to me whatsoever... There is nothing I could do on a 4 that I can't do on a 5... but some gigs might 'demand' a 4... because that is what the band leader wants... But, for me, I have no interest in 4's anymore.
-
Some amps/rigs ARE too powerful for the room...My DB750 is... is will rattle the back walls and the drummer is going green. This is the place for the comparivtily 'weedy' 'Class D's ..
-
No, but true to form , we like to obsess about this sort of stuff and make sure the whole world (or BC) knows about it. We even have endless threads about our amps and cabs...and if that isn't enough, we have the same one all over again in 2 weeks time...and so on..!!
-
Hmmmm there is where I see a problem with people talking about mids... and they want them as they can actually hear themselves, but then don't actually like the sound solo'd..but hey, that is ok and it works in the mix. I'd be thinking this is masking up a load of masking.....and at some point people will hear the bass on its own..and if at that point the sound is poor or not friendly to the ear..?? To me..wrong way to go about this, definitely.

~It doesn't seem to be working which sounds like an understatement.. and this is why I don't have mates in bands. Sure, they might be musical mates or people I like a lot, but doesn't get in the way of whether they are good enough to be there. If I felt strongly enough to make a thread about it, this would all come to a head very very quickly. I don't see the band line-out staying the same ...unless an 'understanding' is made VERY clear.

are there any super bands with poor bass players?
New guitarist. . . sorted.
Yep.... nothing else needs to be said.
There is a guy who plays locally who uses a J type bass (don't recall which make). He plays in a twin loud distorted guitar band, uses the blend pickup position as far as I can tell which is generally a naturally scooped sound, then compounds his error by dialing in an extreme smiley face setting on his amps graphic EQ, the result - he generates a background rumble which is rarely perceptible as actual notes.
Well, yes, there is a certain level of cluelessness you can't really legislate for. My comment is really inspired by a guy asking me what I tho ught of his slap solo...and I could see him doing it... I just couldn't hear a thing. My thought was how can you get that so wrong sound wise..?? MM Bass and Ampeg SVT 3 plus 410.... and the crazy thing is...that two other bass players 'loved' the sound and went out and bought the same rig...with just a slight variation in one of the basses, but still with the MM sound. The common theme is..that the guys play and llike the same sort of material so since they liked the first band..and did the same sort of set, they copied the same bass and amps.. ????

My feeling would be that the SVTll power stage rescues the Ampeg EQ stage...which I'm not at all fussed about as an EQ section. As in, I wouldn't buy the SVTlll pro or the pre amp for the EQ myself. I think the Ampeg sound has been hijacked by Aguilar who have moved it on, IMO but there is still something about the Big valve block and the EQ part is largely irrellevant or doesn't have to work very hard. In the same was as the DB750 EQ is subtle and frankly, needs no more than that anyway. It is all about the output stage...plus the 810 is a great match. This is why I thought the comment about the simulation kit was totally missing the point. The TH500 can get close to a DB amp but if you can't tell the difference, I'd really worry..? I get why people want the light solution, but you should still hear the difference. That is not a criticism. I think this thread largely agrees with that point..ie, the SVTll plus 810 is totally impractical and pretty basic but it works. It is harder to get a 'great' sound...as opposed to the sheer presense of the sound which makes it... than it is to get a bad sound. Maybe that is half its appeal as well.
Was that a "rogue" or genuine bump?
genuine bump... I just the the BC cabs needed more comments on them since a lot of effort had gone into them and feedback would probably be important to the guys who built them.

When it comes to a P Bass it is what most people need... It is hard to mess up the sound, which is a lesson some should note. If I go and see bands, the bass players with the 'worst' sounds tend to be guys looking for something different from a P...and failing. Invaribly it will be some humbucker thing which they think they want for the thicker sound...and then they lack a lot of tone or character.
