The gallery has a fair few secondhand Sei's in I think at this moment according to the last Facebook post they put up.
I will check itg again but I didn't see any J5's when I last looked

Just got a ballpark quote back from Sei... I can live with the price...over the build period, but the lenght of time is something to get my head round..!! Maybe, I should buy an interim bass... and sell it when the Sei is complete..??
For one, post 1964 most people didn't even know what an electric bass guitar was until they saw Paul. Who ever your influences are if you follow the trail back far enough you will find Paul. I am sure Jaco was influenced by Paul. I am adamant about this, if you don't get Paul's playing or his influence on several generations of bass players, it means your missing a very key element to pop music, song writing and bass playing overall. And here's another part of my opinion. If your standing up playing an electric bass guitar your influenced by Paul McCartney, period! Now, with that being said, it's only my opinion. And by the way, there is another thread on Bass Chat about Jaco. The poster hears aimless noodling when he listens to Jaco. What do you think of that? Blue
Yes, only your opinion and one I just don't agree with. Bass didn't begin with PM.. but pop bass may have been made more popular by him IF you listened to him. I didn't, I heard the Beatles and I heard their songs.. and he just happened to play bass on a few of them. I don't even regard him as a bass player.... tbh. Just not someone on my radar. I'm not being dismissive of a massive body of work... but whatever he does doesn't do it for me. I'd listen to the song because it is a good song... the bass does nothing for me. Their legacy is as Lennon/Mcartney, songwriters, IMO..and it stands beside or possible above Motown as an era or outstanding work. That's all. If he means the world to you...fine.

Gigging and the costs - what would you do in this situation?
A question as an aside but pertinent to the topic. Do the Musicians Union do any recruitment and organising at all in the industry? It seems to me there are literally thousands of musicians that are prospective members that are untapped.
Too many people too willing to break the fee rate... not even sure what it is these days and IME, you get involved with the MU when you start to work dates where it is traditionally tied in. -
I don't think you can dismiss something just because of its age. I'm sure there will be youngsters listening to his basslines and the Beatles' music for inspiration aongside more contemporary performers. He's been doing this for over 50 years so there's bound to be ups and downs. Reminds me of that old saying, 'form is temporary, class is permanent.'
That is fair.... I just wouldn't go with the class comment myself, but there you go... But I will remember to ask a few up and commer gtrs who they listened to... my guess it would be 70's players rather than the Beatles. I think it would be a decent bet, as it happens.
In the states our bar gigs are four hours long. Are you saying you would haul full PA and lights and play for 4 hours for free? Blue
I wouldn't play 4 hrs..period. mate does it in Florida and he is clsoe to not being able to hack it anymore.. which knowing him and what drives him, is a real eye-opener. Over in the U;K there are too many bands willing to follow the usual band way of doing things... but it is a two way street... and the venue will pay you what you ask if you can make it work. I know pubs will pay £500 plus for an act... if they can cover it. The problem is what happens when they can't... Since they put on two gigs a week or more, that is quite a source of gigs that has been binned. My theory is that you should settle for a min fee... and back yourself to earn 'more' when you pack them in. The easy way out tho, of course, is to do the bare min...but hey, that is ok..you play like you mean it, and also for pub audiences to expect music to be free. If we condone all this..collectively... then no wonder music is valued so cheaply.. but the flip side of this is..if music was more expensive, 80% or so of bands would never get gigs.. It is a tough call... but I've just had to put some prices up and I've been plesantly surprised at what pubs will pay... but....a common theme here was they don't want everyone to ask for the same rate...as it makes their year long business model harder if rates go up 15-20% -
My opinion, They were fab for their time and any other time including today and tomorrow. The 60 year old should know his influences. The 17 year old should know anyone standing on stage post 1964 with an electric guitar was influenced by The Beatles whether they are willing to admit it or not. Blue
How so... how am I influenced, for example. I've heard a good few tracks, played a few more...never owned an album. I'm closer to 60 than 17 of course, but they wrote some good/great songs.. but I fail to see why and how I MUST be influenced by them. I could say I am influenced by Fraser, MM and Jaco, for sure... but there is nothing in my playing that came from the Beatles, I'm sure. And since he didn't register as a bass player for me...why on earth must he be an influence..?
-
This record never came off my deck..... Listen to Gadd and Jaco go at it around the 4 min mark...and give it 60 seconds or so To this day, this influenced me so much... without me really realising it. http://www.youtube....h?v=pFzMYsLkuxI To me, that is why it makes perfect sense to say Jaco re-wrote the book for bass players......... and I never considered myself a fan..!! Never owned a fretless.. but did I cop a lot of those licks from this one album..
Seems to have had an innately good feel for a melody line from fairly early on even though he didn't start as a bass player.
He had 'melodic' at a time that bass in popular music was a bit more formal.. and he also had license to indulge as they were the biggest thing around from about 1964 onwards..?? and when that money filtered through.
-
I'm staying out of this... but yes...HE was light years on from the standard of the day. Maybe Stanley Clarke was there in the front line too, from a technical point of view but Jaco is still ripped today..less so, Stanley.
You're right there - Wings didn't do very well, really. And his solo career flopped quite badly, didn't it? Or both... I (and I'm sure millions of people worldwide) still listen to Beatles records extensively. Even if you don't like what they did you can't ignore the massive influence they had and still have on subsequent musicians and writers to this day and that continues.
Yes, Wings never lived up to The Beatles....or anywhere near it..?? but then he didn't really need another body of work..and some would say, he didn't get it anyway.. I'm sure many people do still re-live their stuff... good luck to those. I never said I didn't like what they did... I just said things have moved on. How much on an influence they are today..?? depends if you talk to a 60 yr songwriter or a 17 yr old...I'd say. I think writers should be aware of their stuff... but no big deal if they aren't. I think they were fab for their time..but Lennon never lived to prove he had anywhere else to go, and PM ...well, decide yourself. I don't think his solo writing gets anywhere near the same planet as the Beatles songs ..and neither did Lennon's, for that matter. Maybe Imagine ..?? Mull of Kintyre..??............ er..!!!
But never 'on' enough to quite get over The Beatles.. which IMO speaks volumes.
I don't take a band that was finished 45 yrs plus as a reference, tbh... just like I wouldn't dream of playing 'Come together' the same way. So, yes, I got over them eons ago.. whether that is sacriledge to some,..?? oh well...!!
-
To be fair that is a pretty hard act to follow to say the least. They were the biggest band in the history of music and some would argue that they always will be. That alignment of circumstances that led to their massive exposure and that particular talent and cultural situation won't be repeating itself anytime soon.
Yep, so anything after is going to pale big time, which it did. Entirely understandable and they'd never have to work again. I think Lennon and McC were very very lucky to find each other and we are left with a huge legacy but it is not like they could re-invent themselves to anywhere near the same degree. They are a rich back catologue just like Motown and the like are... the only difference that it took more songwriting teams to be as prolific. It is unreasonabl;e to think they'd follow it on..and IMO, they didn't. Both Lennon and PM were lost without their writing partner. But hey, be happy we had what they did put out, but other than that, I'm not all bent out of shape about it. I'd say Jamerson was a bigger bass playing 'influence' on bass in general and the Beatles songs were a snapshot in time. Of course, people remember them, but unless you are Oasis, there are other musical references, IMO.
I would go mental waiting for a year to be honest, when I make a decision I can't wait, it needs to happen as soon as possible, which is why I would probably seek out a secondhand Sei if I got the money together. Im so impatient.
Understand this totally...and of course, things change etc... but............. I've written to Sei about build times and costs. So, I've started putting a bit more impetus into the thought. Next step are to check out the Jake type basses, look out for AC and see a Fender Am Deluxe again.
-
Chalk and cheese... I bought an Am Deluxe and sent it back. It felt tin-pot compared to the Jake. The my Jakes are proper luthier-built quality. I can't fault them, or the other Jake I've tried.
That is a beauty...and I'm glad you think think they are chalk and cheese. I'm probably looking for the same. Maybe I'd rethink the pickups and pots..and go active ..? More food for thought.
If you already have two Sei basses and you seem really happy with them in general, I would say go for a custom built Sei. A year is a long time to wait but as someone else said, it will be worth it. I was desperately underwhelmed by the Alleva Coppolo I played for what it cost even secondhand, whereas I was in awe of the Sei Jazz I once played but that is of course just personal preference. I have owned some beautiful basses over the years but I have wanted a Sei Jazz for the past 15 years so I am slightly biased.
Me too.... I really like them and Martin has a great eye so it would also be a beautiful bass as well. I know this is the option really...but FFS...A year..??? I think I'll write to him and see what his build time is..? I could put a deposit down..??
I know, I know.. I'm so predicable. But something like this? All for less than 800 quid, or maybe a bit more if you want something exactly to your spec.
Looks great, ... I need to know where it stands against an AM Deluxe..as the SH prioce of those are a bit more than the new price of these..??
-
I think I`d be looking at the Fender Deluxe Jazz 5, and also be checking it out from overseas. Even with import/postage it will work out better than what you can get over here - not far from the resell value if you ever decide to move it on in fact.
I've tried one recently but not what I wanted .. might rethink this option tho with another example
-
Check out Marusczyk (Elwood is their Jazz style model), they are getting very popular with people on here at the moment - you can get a custom build in a quick turnaround time a lot cheaper than the alternatives: http://www.public-pe...yk-instruments/
Yes, been following that quite closely. I'd just have to see the work up close. Don't mean anything other than I just need to see one and hear one. I couldn't go blind on that,
-
To be honest, you know what you want and there is only one man who can do it When it arrives the years buildtime will be instantly forgotten and you'll have what you want, rather than a compromise.
Yes... but when I want it..I want it sooner..
Some interesting comments on here! After studying his bass lines and technique a lot more these past few days i tend to agree with what people say on here, especially choice of notes and knowing when to reign it in etc. Very melodic, i can now say that confidently without just chucking in that buzzword thats often associated with his bass playing As a die hard Entwistle fan (hence the name) i must say Pauls playing has taught me a great deal of stuff, in fact I've made one of my best basslines so far from studying him (i am no serial player by any means)
See, now, these are two of the most over-hyped guys around.. but hey, just my opinion. I would say, ...I can't stand either, but that is over stressing the fact that I don't care that much. Same as Geddy Lee, ..if people like them they like them, but it is not a crime to say you don't. Like many many bass players, you might give them a nod but none of them really touched me at all, tbh. Yep, who cares..!!
This is 2015. What's your point? Does good music have a sell-by date? Kanye West makes music in 2015. Is his music necessarily better because it's newer?
My point is that his bass work isn't current now and neither are his songs. Some people would say he never did anything after the Beatles.. I'd agree. Respect him for his valid output..but I reckon that stopped in 1969.. Nothing wrong with that and he has a body of work that will last for many many more years but things move on. Would you go and see him now..? or put on his Beatles records.. or neither?
Just going to leave this here........ BIT excited!! Si
Nice looker. Things like pick-up config could be specc'd to order, I assume, I like things like this because you get the impression that the guy has real pride in his work and makes it accordingly.

I've been mulling this over for a while now but I would like a new bass and thought I'd put it out there for a few opinions. I currently have 2 Sei J5's and really like them. One is a classic VIntage vibe with RW board and Jazz neck and the other is Maple which does Marcus Miller quite well. This bass would probably go at some point once the new bass is bedded in.. Both have very nice attention to detail with regards to wood which is a nice dressy touch I'd want to keep. So, my ideal bass would be Jazz, 5 string, 3 tsb over a nice grain Ash body. RW neck on a flamed neck, block and bound. The neck would be a P-bass at the nut. Now I know Martin Petersen can do this but I'd be waiting a year plus, most probably, which is the only thing that really makes me look for options. So, 1, Custom Sei as above. Looking at upto £3k I expect. 2, Avella Coppolo S/H..as and when they crop up and take the spec as is. No problem with that..if I like it, I like it, same sort of money and will probably hold value best. 3 Fender American deluxe J5 ...£1100 S/H or there are some very keen new prices out there from GAK etc. 4 Bitza from a custom maker who can do spec 1 and the quality wont be a problem but the neck and body plus paint will probably be well north of £1k -which is fine as far as quality goes, but how would I sell a bitza..which out losing too much...? So, ... what do you think?

This is fun... I thought the Beatles wote some great songs but this is 2015... His bass never did anything for me.
