Stax and Atlantic. This was where the cool music was being released in the 60's and 70's. Most of the people/players I knew at the time regarded Motown as pop music and disregarded most of it until the early 70's when What's Going On and the Music Of My Mind were released.
I'd go with this.... I think Stax and Atlantic had the most kudos for quite a while after the fact... but it is still some podium.
Mmmm...Specs on paper or tone? Well firstly for me, the specs on paper. That would easily rule out the majority of cabs, especially when you see the price being asked for some cabs using cheaper, lower performing drivers and less than adequate construction. Some of them look nice though. Then, those that have survived the spec-cull would be judged on real world performance on a gig. Frank.
I think you get to hear 'everything' and then base your thoughts on that... I'll have heard most of the cabs before buying.
This is true for me and what my response to the above question would have been. I've had other cabs that proclaim to be louder and 'hi-fi' or modern and whatever else and a lot of them sounded sterile and boring in the mix. The tks may not be cutting edge technology, but i'm glad of that. They are beautifully built and make my bass sound like I believe it should. No massive sub bass and no shrill clangy highs. How lucky we are to have such a choice to suit all tastes.
Yep, what are you buying ? Specs on paper or tone?? I've heard a good few and a few are tone monsters and a few are tone munchers.... It really isn't rocket science ..you either have ears or you don't.

ooohh Risky.

Can they play? What gigs have you got? Do they know what they are doing? Is it going to be a great gig?
I wonder if we've all got a bit caught up in the hunt for the perfect flat response / hi-fi / super sensitive / massive handling etc. cab over recent years, and forgotten that - for a lot of us at least - a nice driver in a good, well designed & built box gives us the classic bass sound we've got in our heads after all. That's what happened to me, anyway...!
I doubt my sound is typical but I want character from the bass, me, if I can provide it and the amp and cab to match and compliment. I've been heading for the sound I've got for a while now and can get it from both my cab options. Some people's tone goals confuse the hell out of me.. and I think they end up fighting the inherrent sound. I don't think you'll ever make if work unless you've got all the components pulling in the same way. Quite a few people say they want a flat cab and then look at the signal chain and you wonder where 'flat' went... If you go active, amp and cab...that is an awful lot of tone influence...and don't get me started on pedals. If you are always buying new kit, you are probably going round in circles or don't know what you are looking for in the first place.
The dial on the back of the speakers :-)
That will be for turbo sound. 4 is waaaaaayyyy too high on the amp.... I doubt it will sound that good but it wont be doing the cabs much good either at a jam night with randoms all over it.

I don't buy basses with dead spots...

In defence of the Gallery, they are a small team. If Martin spent more time on PR...he wouldn't be building basses. I think they are very approachable, but then can easily blow a day chatting. I like the fact that you can browse their stuff. Btw..if you are in St Albans, you also need to get over to Bass Gear. As with all these places, I'd let them know I am coming over if I expect them to attend to me or had something specific to discuss.

Ampeg PF500 Died. Again. Time to get a replacement. Suggestions?
JTUK replied to pendingrequests's topic in Amps and Cabs
Interesting Lozz..I had the chance to use a PF500 the other day and took out my Demeter instead. I think the Demeter just about made it for me... I dread to think how I would have gotten on with the PF500 if the TH500 is supposed to be louder. It sounds like it could have been a hellish gig for me. But the guy who uses it gets loads out of it...but he has a completely different style to me. -

JTUK replied to pendingrequests's topic in Amps and Cabs
Sticking with Ampeg makes sense and I like that combo PA and and cabs so I'd go for PF800 if that is why you are with the sound. I'm loving the Demeter but wouldn't pretend it does the Ampeg vibe but you can drive the valves quite hard. Definitely has more output than most 500w class D's..but then it is supposed to be 800w.. Downsides... no DI out, altho they do do a version with a Jenson DI, iirc. It is more money that most Class D's but worth that difference IMO. I could do with a gain stage but that is more a comfort factor. I'm not getting the impression that the Mesa Cass D is going to be a threat but that amp may top the rest at that pricepoint. -
The more people say things like this the more I want one
I get good gtrs saying in conversation that they like the Demeter...and I'm not even playing at their gig.. So, yes, currently liking it a lot. but it isn't the DB...but who is pretending it is.

I was talking to a High end amp maker the other day and he said they had considered Class D at some point but he was very very sceptical about some of the power ratings that are claimed. This tallies with my thinking that the only two amps I've used recently that put out something close to what they say they do are the Thunderfunk 550-B and the DB750. Of course, these are not class D, and you only have to be as loud as you need to be so a figure is largely useless... but I know what amps will fill which sort of stages and room and how hard I have to drive them to do it. And I know which ones don't...and have no chance. Because of the way I play, I don't get the input stage really working hard so I go for a bigger amp, and it is at this point, I'm thinking how much guts the amp has. So call me sceptical as well.

No idea how you get a boomy sound at this level..and if you do, I'd start at the way you EQ, tbh.
On the 5 string its 73mm at the 21st fret
Good point..these measurements need to relate to a 5 st bridge... I always felt the bridge was a tad cramped, but was sure on the gauge of the strings... I was never able to measure it tho...
-
great, thanks again. I'll be able to compare now and makes my decisions easier, vheers
-
Ok, cheers, on a roll. What is the neck width at the end of the neck. I'm assuming 21 frets...?
-
Perfect... thank you very much.

If you can produce builds close to your mockups... and you haven't hit any other snags or issues like resonance etc .. I'd say you aren't an amateur..or will stay one for very long. The proof is in the finished product of course, but I'd think you'd have to have...or may well have, serious furniture making skills. Good luck
I obviously hear good things around these parts, but they're just so damn ugly
The GS cabs are so 'good' in the low end that that would be hard to achieve in a smaller box. I'm not sure the SL112's will do that so you'll be considering a change of bias to your sound. A pr of TKS S112's aren't that much smaller ..if at all...but they look great and sound great. The missus couldn't really mind if these were part of the furniture, but if you aren't using the cabs, then maybe store them somewhere less obtrusive...at work or the garage, loft...??

I've looked online a lot and found these bridges but none seem to indicate the string spacing. Looks pretty narrow to me but the saddles look like they have 3 grooves so there may be quite a difference between the narrowest and widest..? Anyone know or have one the can measure. My current bridges are ABM which go out to around 19mm.
We're going through the same thing. Our drummer gave notice a few weeks ago. What's so depressing is that our drummer is top shelf, great timing, great fills and chops, he reminds me of Mitch Mitchells. he really moved our band up a notch with his sound. He's older ,my age early 60s and wants to cut back on gigging. I don't know what were going to do, we might have to take a hit on drum quality, were not going to find anyone as good as him and it's hard to find guys that will put up with our busy schedule. Blue
This is most pertinent...guys who work don't want to be out there 3 times a week, week in, week out, Very few and far bewtween and I'd offered those that do (with a full time job) have no other life. My friends band have this issue and one of the reasons I wouldn't join... The best way out of it will be to form two bands out of it... so the full timers can take all the gigs they need to and the other guys can fill in where they want and can. On the any note, if a guy isn't current then I'm not sure how much time I'd give them. If they hadn't picked up sticks for 2 years...and depending what they were like then, then I'd be very very wary and if it wasn't there in a rehearsal then that would it right there and then. If people practise at home and they just aren't gig fit, then that is different.

"Boys Night Out" Is This The New Niche For Bands?
JTUK replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
As always, there are degrees of the same sort of gigs. Pubs that have door charges for music tend to be a step up from 'free' pubs and then there are festivals that pay and don't pay. So you may well be playing for the joy of being on a 'pro' stage. Beers festivals with no music budget..well, lets not go there as IMO, the majority do it in the name of charity A LOT. Fesitivals should be paying a min of £350 for 50 min slot...but nearer £1k for their top billed acts. So, in that regard, festivals are like Christmas month gigs where you stand a chance to do well... and have a lot of fun doing it. -
Scott Devine has some really good advice regarding GAS
JTUK replied to miles'tone's topic in General Discussion
I had a great MM Stingray from the earliy 80's or late 70's..never really found out which and whilst it did me then... it was a block of wood... I sold it because it was a 4 string but there is no way I could go back to it anyway. But yes, sure, I guess we can remember that when we see the signature model in the shop at a premium.
