In a similar vibe, I saw this guy playing in a pub in London last year - stripped back set of just him playing guitar & singing with a guy on one of those drum boxes they sit on, I was very impressed. https://www.youtube....h?v=BkMdskZB_So
Really like the bass on this - do you know who's playing? -
I managed about 12800 at 55. I was a bit surprised my 16year old son only got to 14KHz ish and my 14 year old got to about 17khz Has anyone tried the subwoofer test on the same page - I must admit I was pretty shocked at the changes in volume I perceived through my KRK Rokit 6 powered monitors which were about £350 a pair. They were pretty loud at at 145hz then got much louder to around 130hz then started fading and at about 110hz hardly audible at all. Then started getting lounder and and fairly flat until about 80hz really big volume peak at about 70hz dropping off and virtually inaudible between 60 and 50hz. Another loudness peak between 45 and 35hz and silent from 30hz on. Am I to assume that my monitors are crap or is something else going on - I know the ears have reduced sensitivity at lower frequencies, could this explain this varied response?
Are you sure you mean UPS and not USPS?
I've used USPS many times and have never had a problem with them, shipping anything from tiny things a couple of inches long to marine boat engines weighing several hundred pounds (don't think they do such heavy stuff anymore). I always use them as first choice shipping from the US. I find that the chances of paying duty are much lower than when using other couriers. In contrast I will never use UPS again, not only are they incompetent they are also dishonest.
-
I've used UPS, probably about six times (usually because no other option) to buy stuff from the states, EVERY SINGLE item was damaged - I never managed to get a penny out of them. If there's no other option than to use UPS - I'll just not buy the product, even if I desperately wanted it.

Does nothing for me - overhyped junkie as far as I'm concerned. Like the guitar playing.

Bass Guitar Magazine - Column about Basschat
MilkyBarKid replied to Silvia Bluejay's topic in General Discussion
Don't know if I'm alone in this, and although it's very unlikely anyone would want to, I'd rather not have any contribution of mine appear in any other place than where I put it. To my mind BGM has dropped in quality so much that I virtually never purchase it - this would be the last nail in the coffin. -
Anyone have any experience with "Richards Guitars"?
MilkyBarKid replied to hellothere's topic in General Discussion
I've had two dealings with him, the first he gave me some advice which was to my benefit and resulted in him losing work - this impressed me; secondly I bought a used guitar for my ten year old son from him, and it was well handled when I tried it (it has just come in). When I came to collect and pay for the guitar it was absolutely immaculate new strings - much improved setup and beautifully polished, and the price was quite reasonable too. He is quite intense and opinionated, but he does offer good advice. The only negative to visiting the shop is that he can't bear to leave a phone ringing even when dealing with a customer, which can be a bit irritating. I don't think they've got much bass stuff and I can't remember seeing a bass amp there when I was in last. -
Anyone know what wood his might be?
MilkyBarKid replied to Mylkinut's topic in Repairs and Technical
I'd agree with maple - or possibly a bleached mahogany. Sometimes mahogany isn't sufficiently homogeneous in colour and in that case they might bleach it before staining it back to mahogany colour. Someone could have sanded through the bleatched bit - it doesn't look like it's been sanded through a top layer of wood - I'd expect to see a bit more feathering. Better 'photos would help. -
That does seem a little excessive!! I bought one as a present for less than £50 a couple of years ago and wished I'd kept it. I've been keeping an eye out for another and hadn't noticed any Klon like price spikes. If I was buying another now I think I might opt for a software effect like an s-gear 2.

Px5d sometimes available for less than £50 on eBay.

Chris - could you explain "class compatible" to us and which devices have it, and whether it relates only to audio devices. It would also be of interest to know how that will affect configuration software provided by manufacturers. Thanks mbk

A bit more inflation would be useful. How many channel of audio and how many midi channels. What's your budget. There are a huge number of devices out there. One thing which is really important is whether manufacturers continue to support new operating systems with drivers. I think there's a new windows is on the way, so I'd check whether the manufacturer is planning to offer drivers for that. You can waste a lot of your life mucking around with this stuff so I'd steer away from anything with at the bottom end of the market.
True. So who shops at Amazon?
Don't encourage me - Amazon - virtually no taxes paid in the Uk. I'm not a big fan of unions but Amazon could have taught some victorian employers lessons in how to create soul-destroying jobs, employing agency workers for 12 weeks and letting them go before any employment rights kick in. Union busting. So no I don't shop at Amazon. I'm still amazed that they were allowed to take over the "The Book Depository" who used to consistently undercut them on price, paid uk taxes, and didn't treat people like dirt. Needless to say they don't undercut Amazon any more - a big thanks to the competition commission or whatever they're called these days.

Just did a google search for a yamaha music stand - £22 in several Uk shops or £46.94 at Thomann. The UK price includes £4.40 for our NHS/ Schools/ Deficit Reduction, maintaining UK jobs, reducing balance of payments shortfall; the German £46.94 will include about £8 for German infrastructure spending / German Schools / German budget surplus increase, etc. I was actually looking for this stand rather than an example of how Thomann isn't so great on prices. Many UK stores have price match offers too. I hate to bang on about this but our children will be paying for our extravagance for the next fifty or so years - so it would be nice if we could keep their bills down a little by ensuring as much tax revenue stays in the UK as possible.
-
Don't forget the other benefits - probably 25% or more of your purchase price goes to supporting the ailing German economy. Cutting the retirement age to 63 years just isn't enough for those poor Germans. Please support German companies to allow the poor downtrodden German workers to have a further reduction in retirement age. Their roads are pretty poor too, and their cities and transport infrastructure are third world standard - they need all the help they can get. Seriously - I hope none of you on this thread are complaining about financial cuts in the UK!!

I don't know if you can get woodworking forstner bits that small but if not I'd try and get a specialised woodworking bit. The other thing is don't use a chinese drill press, or a hand drill in a stand, as there will be too much runout (wobble) to get an accurate hole. Make sure that whoever does it uses a quality drill press, preferebly British or European.

Judith Owen Tour 2015 with Lee Sklar
MilkyBarKid replied to yorks5stringer's topic in General Discussion
Saw her in Ronnie Scotts in Birmingham in the early 1990's fantastic set - she had a great bass player there too. Great set - very intimate venue. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. She seemed to disappear for very years. -

Have you thought of reading the book "The Inner Game of Music", it's years since I read it but it seemed to address this problem. I know I used to get mad as hell with my ski-ing at a time when I did it frequently. I couldn't get anything right one cold weekend morning in Scotland, I didn't normally drink on the slopes but I think I had about three or four pints and stayed in the restaurant for a couple of hours, at the time it wasn't much compared to what I consumed every night, so I wasn't in any way inebriated, but the difference it made to my ski-ing was tremendous, I was relaxed not trying hard and everything just clicked. I've found the same with other endeavours - if you're not in the right relaxed framework - you won't learn, you'll just get frustrated and you may as well go and do something else.

Anyone care to enlighen me as to what effects Sandin Wilson will be using to get his sound - looks as if he has a substantial set of pedals on the floor. I'd guess chorus and octaver but what else?

count me in too. Thanks
