1. I'm pleased this thread is being kept alive. In the old Bassworld days (pre BC) there was a much more anti Fender vibe to a lot of comments. I like to have a flatwound P, a roundwound P AND a P bass strung with Rotoswound TruBasss nylon strings. I agree with WoT that there is a growl as well as a thump. Every genre I've ever explored has always had a bit of inspiration for me with a bassist rocking a P-bass. I love telecasters and I love P-basses so I really do buy into the old adage that Leo got it right first time.
2. The G3 is the only one that is more my tastes, the first two are a bit too 80s for me. I perodically do EBay searches for Rippers and Grabers but I'm just window shopping really
3. Sounds like a lot of the jams I have had on the alt.folk / alt.country circuit. Great fun!
4. What do you have in the way of Americana & I don't suppose you have any Bluegrass? I'm looking for a couple of records by The Dillards and I also always keep an eye out for Dylan. Cheers
5. I do like the idea of this product. I like ashtray covers on P-basses so the technique is ruled out with the covers on. However I'm liking the alternative (cheaper!) suggestions listed here too.
6.
ask your local guitar shop. most chuck the boxes for big cabs
Depending on your relationship with them they are normally happen to obilge, Or try one of the industrial estates. Making packaging to fit around is the other passable alternative. Good luck
7. Massive precision fan too. Fantastic picture, welcome to the forum...even if you have been here a fair while lurking! Good luck with the beard too
8. That's great. I know they get knocked by a few on these pages but it is all we have for a UK bass magazine at the moment and I feel they should be supported. They are not some big multi million business and I for one will continue to support them
9.
Well you know i said i was going to get FENDER JAZZ............Well i was at PMT in salford and had a go on this bass and thought it was the dogs...... and half the price of the fender. You might think its totally out of left field but i bought a Yamaha BB714BS. Cracking bass and got great sound !!! Well happy. cheers Ian.
Cool, did they do the Take It Away Today deal too? Also, you have to post pics. It's the law round these parts!
10. Looking forward to seeing the P-bass, those two look great.
11.
oh also, a gig that pays...
An important omission! This depends on a lot of factors. My current band has earned over £700 from the last 3 gigs playing originals but the last 3 bands I was in didn't earn a penny. This is down to having members with connections (of which I am not really one of them!). A few years back we started on the Open Mic circuit with an older originals band and this eventually led to us earning £400 a show. Sometimes you have to put yourself out first in order to make some money.
what is soul destoying is the fact, that playing some covers is the only real way of getting paying gigs. when it comes to cash its, allways been so.. but punters these days, are not averse to "your version" of a tune, think "smooth crimimal" and stuff like that.
I think this is true to a point but I don't find it soul destroying. You just have to work harder to find a scene to fit into. I think there are advantages and downsides to playing in covers or originals bands. Personally I prefer originals but I've loved playing in 2 excellent covers bands in my time.
You have to be persistent-just handing over a demo and waiting for them to ring you will get you nowhere-they never, ever do. You have to keep going back and making a pain in the arse of yourself until they relent and give you a gig. I'm crap at it, but it's a necessary evil. Also have a good press pack to go with the demo, saying something about the band, your history, influences, set list, how much you charge etc. And make sure there are contact numbers, even though they won't ring you.
Sound advice here IMHO
Hire a room and charge on the door? That would certainly work out if you've got enough mates to cover the charge. Are there any regularly gigging bands you like locally? you could ask them if you could support them.
I think this is a great idea. We're planning this in March. A great way to earn a lot of money and it gets promoters interested too as they see you doing well cutting them out! So long as you all put the work in or you run the risk of playing to the bar staff and your girlfriends. Advance sales also secures not being let down by unreliable friends. Good luck
12. Congratulations - no better feeling then aceing an audition. Well done
13. I picked my copy up today in WHSmiths. It's nice to see Basschat getting the plug despite misspellings and old photos. Curious to know who is in the photo.
14.
'Please enquire' always means 'too expensive' for me
Yes, I agree. I'd maybe go on to enquire about plectrum prices though so I could walk out with some dignity Hoping to have an update for this thread soon btw
15. It may be an inexperienced seller with very poor photography skills. However I always feel with vintage kit you have to be overly cautious as missing out on a great sale is far better than getting ripped off (even if not the sellers fault)
16. I've seen some of the Gibson fakes that are flooding the UK market right now (they are literally flooding the market!) and to an untrained eye they are scarily close looking. EBay will probably pull it in the morning, from experience they take a day or so
17. Speaking as someone who has been researching the vintage market quite heavily in recent months there does seem to be a big gulf between what sellers want and what buyers want. Also certain basses are set at sky high cost because buyers know that eventually there will be somebody who is happy to pay the sky high costs. Surely the reason for buying is also a factor. A proper collector would be influenced by a refret but somebody who just fancies the retro vibe may want to play something that plays better. By and large I agree with the sentiments posted here so far
18. I've owned both basses. The offer they are suggesting on your Les Paul is excellent (I'm letting mine go for less than that & that's not as a part ex!). The Burns has a lot of tonal variation & that Wild Dog setting was great fun. If the Les Paul isn't working for you it could be a good deal. I don't know what the resale value of a Burns Bison is these days but this does sound like a good deal and clearly if you find your current set up than certainly a change needs to occur. Good luck with it
19. This is a great thread with some really interesting views. I found myself agreeing with Garethox only to scroll down and completely agree with Jakesbass! Er, so what do I know!? My view is therefore at best confused. I think there is a danger with comparing pro players to our own unperfected techniques (I'm thinking about myself here, so as we are clear) but also feel to an extent that the rule is there is no rule. Certainly it's best to be able to learn something properly before any corners are cut
20.
at that price you can't go wrong. If you don't like it sell it on at minimal loss.
I picked up the 4 string version on a Basschat trade. I think this one has been through a few hands on this forum. It's sturdy with a great neck and a lot of tone. Yours sounds like a great deal. Not sure I'll keep mine forever but I have to agree with Nick. What's to lose? Go for it!
21.
Best bet would probably be to buy a whole new 70's style bridge from Bass Parts Resource and pull out the bits you need!
I think this is probably a much better solution than those rip off merchants who brake up classic basses on EBay only to put the thumb rest on auction for silly money!
22. I'm always jittery around trussrod adjustments. I hope it works out well in the end
23.
infact i may have just talked myself into keeping this bass. main reason i may like to keep this now is that, in passive mode it has a good low end sound when both pickups are activated and in parallel mode, so when i use my bootsy collins fuzz wah in certain songs all i do is put it into active mode where the treble boost is already at a desired level and so is bass boost, i then just turn off the neck pickup and i have my perfect tone for the fuzz. so in easy to follow terms, all i have to do is hit 2 switches rather than to try resetting levels mid set........ ok sorry for rant but unless you have the shizzy of basses then i may just keep this,,,,,lol
It doesn't seem that long ago that you were singing it's praises in other threads. It looks good in the photos & suits you. I was surprised when I saw it on offer. You may come to regret losing it. Just my 2 cents
24. I think the grass always seems greener. If it ain't broke...
