1. I've got no set practice routine either. Usually it's a mix of stuff from my band's set and stuff I like mixed with a couple of scales. I think it's fair to suggest I lack structure!
2. Two gigs since I was last on Basschat; Thursday night was London at The Troubadour. I thought we played well & were certainly well recieved. The soundman seemed to struggle with my sound during soundcheck but thankfully we got it sorted for the gig. The bass player from the support band was good and a nice chap too. Tonight was an acoustic gig in our home town. We supported Bristol's Howling Lord and again the bass player was good / a nice guy. Great sound from his JV Squier and Mark Bass rig. I was on my upright tonight and I was looking forward to the show. We played well but there were a couple of people talking which was mildly irratating. Still not enough to spoil a good couple of shows.
3. Carole Kay / Paul McCartney / James Jamerson are the usual suspects for me but I'd add late great Byrds 4 stringer Skip Battin too
4.
Ooops Although I do feel that you can't say "I've joined a motown/carol kaye type band and I hate flats"...... Thats like saying "I've entered for the formula one, is there a way I can do it without a fast car?" lol Flats are great in certain situations, I remember I had them on an old 5 string years ago, for pop and rock....sound so nice and even! Si
I too completely agree with this. Obviously with your tone rolled back & the volume nudged back this too is acceptable & works too
5. Welcome Rusty
6. Welcome Glenn
7.
Does anybody actually have this problem on this site? I usually have interested PMs that ask specific questions if it's what they are after they usually buy if not they don't. Surely that's the point of PMing a question.
No & exactly
8. To echo the other comments, no, you know they'll be back in a week or two
9. It's all very subjective like BigRedX said. Personally I love flats & have no issues using them on fretted basses.
14 posts and no one slagged off Rotosounds? Oh sorry I just have......
I pretty much use Rotosounds exclusively now
10. In these hard times it's always nice to hear some folk catch a break
11. My answer would be "not that weird!...and possibly cheaper too!"
12. Welcome
13. I don't think it would look silly. Personally I'd just strip the whole thing but that's just me
14. Welcome Frans
15. Welcome Jack
16. Welcome. You're in the right place
17. I've played in a few covers bands & never played Mustang Sally & the usual covers. One band I had found a good scene & we were getting £400 a show. It's just knowing where the scenes are or failing that being happy to take unpaid bookings. The £400 band built up a reputation doing a lot of Open Mic & we didn't just stumble into paid gigs.
18. Welcome Ben
19. Welcome to the forum
20.
I agree with 99% of burrito's post except....There is no treble to a tele bass! but yeah that should get you there if you stick flatties on.
I moved to flats before I bought a 51RI bass & that was the last bass to get changed over. And I'm not talking the tele bass with the mudbucker, we're talking about the early 50s ones that Squier & Fender have reissued - in case that gets me the extra 1% of approval!?
21.
Heavy gauge flatwounds are in the post, and meanwhile I will work on my rusty picking technique. Love the photo. Is it obligatory to wear the bass at collarbone height? Thanks again for all the good advice.
Just bear in mind if you've previously used lighter strings you *may* need to tweak the trussrod. It depends on how big a jump you are making. Re bass height, that was just the fashion in the 60s, in the same way a lot of punks played near their knees!

Hi There

Welcome to Basschat, those Epi T-birds are screamingly good fun & believe me the Gibson's don't play £800 better
23. We've done LP in my current band and I have done a 45rpm in the past but I'd have to say the 45s are harder to shift. It's worth having a record if you want to say you've done it (& this was a big deal for me) but having done it now I'd only consider LP records. Mastering can sort out a multitude of sins that develop when formatting your tracks so I echo the comments made by the rest of you.
24. I think it comes down to taste whether people think they look good (a bit like any product though!). People I know who own one seem to like them. Not for me I'm afraid
25.
I love to play both electric and DB. They offer different musical gratification and I can't do without either.
Pretty much where I am at
