1.
Got to remember that most of those binned were binned before the existence of the Interweb or E-bay and together these have sent the knowledge of and the price of old instruments through the roof.
A good point. When I first got into ashtray covers on Precision basses I sent a cheque via Airmail to the USA and waited 4-6wks for delivery. That was only 15yrs ago.
2. I quite like the tone in the soundclip having downloaded & listened. More importantly it's great if you find just how you want to sound. I'm sure if I posted my tone at least 75% of you would hate it & think I was stuck in the Stone Age. At least 10% of you wouldwant to marry me though
3. I read his comments more as he doesn't have the confidence to tweak the truss rod & not that it was faulty
4. I tend to flightcase my stuff. It does increase the value & interest but never to the value of the investment. I think you price yours fairly too
5. I thought MIM too.
6. Welcome Paul from just down the A34 in Berkshire! A very Sunburst-y cool avatar you have going on there. Gotta love those vintage Fenders!
7.
Sounds good - nice to see someone with a positive attitude to an audition, by suggesting songs that they think will work for the band.
I'd keep an open mind until you meet him. Lozz may well be right here but the initial thought is that he is going to be a bit of a control freak. Watch this space I guess!?
8. I spotted (& clicked on) the link only a couple of minutes ago. I'd never heard of them but the website made me feel like I'd had my head buried in the sand recently. If they do get UK distrubution here I wonder if they'll take off? Certainly look like they mean business.
9. I've been really obsessing over 60s basses and Garage / Psych bands lately so had seen this on one of my recent EBay trawls. It looks great and I'd love a Framus.
10. These have come up before and people seemed to think he was alright. He's a one man business based in Bath I believe
Just in case you didn't notice.
Sorry, I don't get it. Is that good or bad? A scale length for a 4003 bass is 84.5 cm (33 1/4'') anyway.
11. Welcome The only mid life crisis I've heard of is where you don't play bass & all you have is getting older.
12. Sorry to hear this. I wouldn't let a couple of bad experiences put you off. Sometimes we just aren't right for certain bands (you acknowledge that it wasn't your dream band & I suspect they picked up on this). People then feel they have to offer an excuse which is usually not the actual reason - classic break up "It's not you, it's me" that don't really answer everything. I'd sit tight and something will come along. Best of luck
13.
Given the value, or at least the going rate for em, and with the facilities available to sell them these days, what can go wrong that would make them only fit for the skip ?
I've seen a lot of acoustics that have been put in attics and the neck starts to bow, the body is raised by the bridge and they can't be repaired. A friend of mine was offered a late 70s Antigua Fender P-bass. When the old lady got it out from under the bed it had quite literally turned to mush. Incredible but true. I agree that most are probably salvageable but a lot of less experienced players probably think it's beyond repair if it has missing tuning pegs and no strings. Truss rod problems are also common for basses that haven't been stored properly. Just a few of the examples that I have seen
14. When I clicked on this thread I actually thought "basic" was going to be a little more advanced than not knowing the difference between a major or a minor; or knowing the key of a tune. My theory is about the same standard as most musicians I work with but I am always hugely impressed by those who put the work in and know more. Sadly it's not a sexy subject but the reality is that your playing will become a lot sexier if you know your stuff.
15. I saw this yesterday & thought it was expensive. Looks great but 96% feedback I'd be avoiding even at half the price
16. There are a couple of Ampeg USA SVT 210 cabs on sale here. I used to own one & it was awesome. I sold it purely because I wanted a matched cab with my new head that I'd bought
17. It is roughly the same. I have the bottom bass & it now looks more like the top bass. Actually I've since flipped the necks over on a couple but my point is made. The other alternative is a custom pickguard. The 57RI is a lovely, lovely bass so I really would consider this option first
18. I actually do want to join this band
19. Good man You can't split those two up
20. Last time I saw my guitarist play bass his face reminded me of the time I picked my cats up after they'd be neutered - same expression!
21. Just because they are not for sale doesn't mean they are not still around. I think a lot were badly ignored & wound up being thrown. My friend runs our local music shop & he often sees beautiful instruments now only fit for the skip. The rest (I hope) are on Basschat!
22. My first Jazz was like yours, less checkerboardy though. I think you'll regret selling the SX P-bass
23. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Precision-Bas...=item19c3a20395 It does make you wonder why he picked this up in the first place?
24. Whilst I agree with all the above I think you may wish to try flats if you prefer less brightness. Best thing I ever did
25. My MIJ Precision which I still have from the late 80s. I started playing because my friends and I were massively into music and we decided to form a band. Happy days! Band was pants mind you!
