1. I have owned and gigged a puma 500 with a s210 cab for about two years. Worked great, excellent clean sound, plenty of headroom for my gigs (pub/small club), smooth low end and high end. Only drawback for me was that I realised I liked an old school sound better, especially when using older basses. I missed the ability to dial in a little overdrive here and there, without resorting to a pedal. So i sold the rig and bought a RH450 with matching 2x12 cab, but I should have kept the puma...
2. Don't like ampeg svt very much, so I'd go for a well looked after fender bassman 100, paired with a couple of modern and efficient cabs. I'm sure some of the other more modern amps mentioned here are as good, but I've never played any enough to put them in mylist Curiously I'm falling out of love with the RH450, and in love again with my 1979 peavey mark III, but it's too personal to be my vote for best amp ever.
3.
being as this thread is "best value.." does anyone have any experience of the Fender Rumble 112? They're light and cheap. Any good?
Yes I have two of them as my main gigging rig. Good enough build quality, good looks (if that matters to you), very light and transportable, sturdy corners, switchable tweeter. Tone wise, i'd say they are rather bright and clear. At higher volumes you really need two to get the bottom end we all need and want. I had to do a pub gig with just one, and I feeling a little wimpy on the lower notes. Mind you, no farting or misbehaviour, just a little less oomph you could need. with 2 of them, not a problem (Played dub/reggae with my TC rh450 through them). I'd change them for a very high end replacement only, and that's when I win the lottery and have exhausted all my other musical needs I would recommend them as perhaps the best cheap 1x12 around. I paid around £210 each from a shop in Edinburgh.
4. possibly interested, not sure what I could trade you for that though! Where about do you stay in Edinburgh?
5. No one needs a sturdy case for their mixer, amp, and effects? Make me an offer, I want rid of it!

7. Very sturdy flightcase with 6 rack units plus space for mixer on top. Mixer rack tilts forward for better operation. Used to house our mixer, PA amp and mic wireless unit. Front, back and top panel are detachable. Looks similar to this, only 20 years older. Got plenty of bumps and scratches, as it has been on the road a lot, but everything works and locks as intended. Comes with folding base to bring it up to chest height, and it's stickered as made in england. I have no idea how much this might be worth, say £25? I'll ship it but it's quite heavy and bulky (it's a box after all).
8. When I started off on bass (late 80's) somebody handed me a black Aria Pro II, no idea what model (traditionally shaped, no pointy bits other than headstock). I noticed something wrong in the neck, and I found out the neck was actually broken somewhere under the 3rd fret, so a bit of the truss rod was sticking out. That was bad to play My parents took pity of me and brought me to a rabbit warren of a shop in my home city, where I picked a Manson and FBT amp, passing a 70's us-made fender p bass as it didn't have enough knobs and controls...
9. The practice room of an old band of mine was practically doubling up as a broken musical equipment storage area, and some of the ancient bits of kit would occasionally be pressed into service when needed. Enter "Steelphon" 2x15 active PA speakers. A pair of them, only one working. Plugged the bass directly in, direst tone you can imagine. Had to use it for a couple of months until we got enough money to fix the TE combo. Which i disliked anyway...
10. Just got it back from the tech. The battery in the pickups is simply used to increase magnetisation of the pickups, so no fixed eq or anything. Raised the pickups, set the action right, and boy does he sing now! Even better than before. Much clearer highs and high mid, very good definition. Can't wait to take it to band practice tonight!
11. on hold... ...and sold, thank you all.
12. Squier bronco, short scale, black with white pickguard, weighs very little, as new (still got the plastic on the pickguard). This belongs to my partner, who wants to upgrade to a squier mustang (mikey way signature, she likes the sparkle finish and more contoured body, but never heard of my chemical romance). Light usage, no gigging. Happy to ship it for £90 all in. Pics on request, yet it's your standard bronco, white pickup and all. SOLD
13. Some of RHCP's offerings from Blood Sugar Sex Magic were pretty funky, and not 70's at all!
14. Peavey T-40 and Peavey Mark III/IV 400 + 2x15 black widow cab
15. Sexy MF, prince
16. Rickenbacker with overdriven Marshall guitar amp with 4x15 cab(s)
17. It's all about the loudness of the cab, not how much power you put into it! A lower impedance cab (the 4 ohm one) will draw more electricity from the amplifier, but will the speaker more air in an equally pleasing way than another cab, 4 or 8 ohm? My suggestion is to find a cab you like and buy it If it's 8ohm, you can drive 2 with the same amp, that WILL be louder than one cab!
18. My wife plays some bass and guitar, she is small (5ft3, 52 kgs), but with big hands for her size. She favours larger necks for guitar, as she started off on classical guitar, but smaller necks for bass. At the moment she is re-learning the bass, so she went for a simple squier bronco, but she is now looking to slightly upgrade to a squier mustang (one of the mickey way signature ones). For her it's mainly the actual size and weight of the instrument that is a problem. Once she gets some confidence, i'll try to get her to play one of my lighter basses - the status or the aerodyne P. Much more choice on 34' scale than on the short ones.
19. I can't add anything to what has been said about length of sets and amp/cabs. On using the T-40, I regularly use mine for gigs (2x1hr sets) with little trouble. The tone is great for most styles, I even did reggae with it Get yourself a nice wide strap, adopt proper posture and off you go!
20. Is this thread dead? i'll try a bit of (figurative) CPR. 21. I'd say it affects only open string notes. I suppose there would be some sound difference if the string was vibrating off a piece of plastic, bone, or brass. I find that to be true in the sense that open strings on a brass nut sound more like normally fretted ones
22. Very nice short set on whistlebinkies band showcase last night. We were first up, everybody turned up on time, minimal amount of fuss, quick "soundcheck" to make sure everything was properly plugged in and working (and not at stupid volume). during the gig the sound on stage was quite poor but not unbearable, so we soldiered on. Gig itself went really well, reasonably well attended for a school night, gave the audience 45 mins of our best and danciest soul/rock/funk, and everybody looked and sounded happy, including the manager who said there would be no problem getting a booking for the new year. Smiles all round! pic here: https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/537532_10151295432561952_711703703_n.jpg
