1. That's a lovely looking bass Hadrien is playing.
2.
Ah, the Skjold Offset Whaleback Although each to their own etc... TBH I could probably come around to the idea if it plays really nicely, which I bet they do! ped
YE GODS!!! That monstrosity is the John Merrick of bass guitars.
3. I'd just like to say that I've had instruments shipped by USPS & without exception they've been with me within 7 days. My Hamer 12 string bass arrived from the US in 2 days!
4. Allowing a bloody "Serious Relationship" & a "Steady Job" to come between me & some great times & great gigs all over Europe with my old band. Needless to say both relationship & job are long gone. I've got more regrets than anything else......
5. The thumb on my left hand does this occasionally. It's never happened when I've been playing though & it only lasts for a minute or two so I've never bothered seeking medical advice about it.
6. It looks like the builder started to carve the body shape then just lost interest & gave up.
7.
Hi, I'm also curious what year this one is. It seems to have the old fingerboard?
It looks like it has the newer Phenowood fingerboard to me (I've got two Zons, one with Phenowood board & an older one where the fingerboard is the same as the rest of the neck).
8.

That's a part of their long career The Stylistics would rather forget.....
9. I've always wanted one of those - they're f***ing fantastic basses! I may have to pay you a visit to have a look if you get it....... Have a look here for dating/serial number information: http://www.ovationguitars.com/?fa=codethree One thing you might not be aware of with these basses - there's a strange proximity effect thing that happens with one of the pickups (can't remember if it's neck or bridge) where if you bend a string the note just disappears. I think this is common to all Magnums but I'm not sure - maybe somebody could comment on this if they know for sure.
10. I've never owned one but they are bloody good basses.
11. How about "Waltzing's for dreamers" by Richard Thompson? (It's on his "Amnesia" album & it's a bloody fantastic song)
12. Did anybody on the forum buy the 5 string Zon Legacy with neck LEDs that finished on Ebay yesterday evening?
13. I wouldn't expect a standard set up to include anything to do with the electrics; it'd just be neck relief, bridge adjustment & a new set of strings. The crackling pot is probably being caused by the track in the pot becoming carbonised - this happens when pots are left untouched for any length of time. You could probably sort it out yourself with a can of electrical contact cleaner.
14. I use a Jacques "Meistersinger" analogue chorus pedal which is pretty damn superb. Works great for bass & guitar & has a really useful blend control, as well as the best designed battery holder I've ever used on a pedal - just open the little door & drop the battery in. Love it!
15. Maple & ash would be pretty toppy, especially with a bolt-on neck. You'd be better off going with mahogany for the sound you want IMO.
16.
Exercises away from your bass are pretty meaningless, mate. You actually had the required strength in your fingers when you were 3. Its the efficient use of muscles that matters not strength (I like to think of it as grace not power - liek a ballet dancer vs a weightlifter). The only exercises worth doing to improve finger dexterity are those that involve you doing the thing you need the dexterity for; playing the bass. You need to play things that are not comfortable until they become comfortable. Then you are progressing. It takes time and there are no short cuts.
Abso-bloody-lutely!! Great post.
17.
I have just bought an Ashdown ABM C100 300 Evo combo and was told it can be used with headphones, but I can't see how. Can anyone confirm this please, or is it possible to get a device to plug into the tuner / line out?
Is it one of the 1x10 combo's? I've got one of those & you definitely can't use headphones with it. (However, mine is one of the older UK built ones with white buttons so a newer version might be different).
18. I'm still desperately trying to find someone to give me a lift up to Swindon to get these off you.
19.
For one truly awful moment, I read this as Squier James Jamerson Signature Jazz ...
Same here.
20.
Hey guys! So here's the story... Am in a band at school and we have a new setlist, I have been self taught for the first 3 years of my playing and have just begun taking lessons from a very good teacher... and he has placed me at grade 5 as far as my technique and playing stand now of course I was pleased with this but he also pointed out that I had fallen into some bad habits as regards to my technique and we have begun working on this to get me out of the ruts I'm in...
I'd be wary of any teacher who imposes a "This is the right technique" regime - what's not right for him may be very comfortable & natural for you. There are plenty of excellent players who's techniques are very idiosyncratic & would be frowned at by the "Correct Technique Nazis"..
