1. I played one of these at the Frankfurt trade fair in about 1984. I owned a Rickenbacker 4001 at the time & I honestly thought the Fernandes was better. Fernandes made a load of copies of well known basses & guitars & they were all superb. They were making a Jaco Pastorious Jazz bass replica years before Fender got round to doing it.
2. If it's one of the early to mid 80s Fernandes models it's probably better quality than a real Rickenbacker.
3. Be patient & leave it the f*** alone until it's better or you'll end up with all manner of hand trouble for the rest of your life. It's only a couple of weeks.
4.
I'd give both my balls for a Brian Setzer 6120.
I used to have a metallic purple Brian Setzer Hotrod 6120 - it was f***ing brilliant!
5. If I was twenty years younger I'd be well up for it! Good luck with finding someone.
6. "One of the greatest bass guitars ever built"? I don't think so. The magnesium alloy they built them from was very soft, and the string retainers at the headstock apparently had the unfortunate habit of detaching under string tension.
7. I'm a huge fan of Gretsch guitars (I've owned a 6120 & a Duojet) but the basses are pretty sh*te IMO.
8.
To write just one piece of music I can be proud of. Just one.
That would probably be mine too, though I can't see it ever happening. Everything I've ever written has been utter sh*t.
9. For one horrible moment I thought it was going to be another clip of that Japanese bass playing transvestite again......... Nice playing!
10. Thora Hird once gave me a hand job. [sub]No she didn't. It was the Queen mother.[/sub]
11. In no particular order: Gibson Thunderbird (old one with chrome hardware). Rickenbacker 4001 (has to be black with white binding & scratchplate). Zon Legacy. Spector.
12. My favourite description of a bass sound has to be Nick Lowe's comment when talking about his Hamer 8 string bass: It sounded "Like a dinosaur eating cars!"
13. Joe Zon recommends WD40 for cleaning & polishing the Phenowood fingerboards on his basses. I use it & it works fine.
14. When I joined the forum in March this year I was at a make or break point with my bass playing. I'd been a bass player for 30 years but hadn't really touched it for 10 of them, concentrating more on learning to play guitar & keyboards. I came across the forum by accident while searching for some bass related topic & decided to sign up & see if my interest in bass would be rekindled or whether it would prove to me once and for all that it was time to sell the gear & give up playing altogether. Fast forward to 31st December and I'm the incredibly proud owner of another Zon, have joined a band for the first time in years due to contacts made on the forum (thanks Matt!), and am also about to go into the studio to record a bunch of songs with another old muso friend who contacted me last week. Most importantly I am enjoying my playing in a way that I honestly never thought I would again, which is just such a great feeling. I honestly think that I would have sold all my bass gear by now if I hadn't discovered the wealth of knowledge & the genuinely fantastic bunch of people who make this forum such a useful & valuable resource, as well as just a great place to spend some time (probably too much time actually!). Thanks for breathing new life into this old bastard - I really appreciate it. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL.
15.
You'll get all the answers you need here.
And plenty you don't need...... Welcome!
16.
On page 73 of the January BGM there is an article about "Luna Guitars" and this special PBass 'copy' they have produced for Paz Lenchantin.
Paz Lenchantin gives me the horn. Merry Christmas.
17. F***ing hell! Progtastic!! (With a herniated lumbar disc I wouldn't even dare pick this up!).
18. It might be worth you looking at Hiscox cases as one of their selling points is their great insulation properties.
19.
We did our first gig last night and to my horror I noticed that under dim stage lighting the black lines where the frets used to be on the dark brown board become invisible!
I think you'll find this is why 99% of lined fretless basses have the fret lines in a lighter colour than the fingerboard.
20.
I strongly suspect that the problem is with poplar ply. The first company to build poplar ply cabinets (in the late eighties) was Hughes and Kettner. It is interesting to note that they didn't produce any of their 'Lightline' cabs with a rating higher than 100 watts. And they don't use poplar ply anymore.
So poplar has turned out to be to be unpoplar then......................
21. As we're posting pictures of guitars, here's my 1982 Hamer Special: I had an absolutely superb 1995 Hamer Standard (explorer shape) too but I sold that to fund my last Zon purchase.
22.
Remember you can get a "proper" bass synth like a Novation Bass Station for ~£150. OR you could get a synth with a built-in USB audio interface like an X-Station or a Xiosynth.
+1 Don't f*** about with software synths - buy a proper one!
