1.
Felix Papalardi on 'Long Red' live.
Yes!
2. Not a track from Red, but a bit of live Crimson that really shows off Wetton's amazing tone - and what an incredible band they were. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lGZQULq07I Bass prominent at around 3:15.
3.
McVie and Entwhisle aren't fancy players but played Alembic..but yeah, roots on a fancy top is a bit naff. The basses are a bit 'look at me' so you should have a bit of a trick or two...IMO.
I would never put McVie and Entwistle in the same bass boat, very different players. If you listen to any live Who recordings you'll hear Entwistle playing his balls off throughout. His style was perfectly suited to Alembic, and in my opionion they probably gave him the best vehicle for his tone.
4. Red by King Crimson. I cannot overstate what an awesome bass album this is. John Wetton's tone is monstrous.
5. Two amazing bargains.
6. I've long wanted to build a slab replica. I doubt it would be as accurate as yours! I have that Barry Matthews book, I was a little sad that it didn't really shed much light on the supposed 'unique' tone these things were suposed to have. It mentioned it several times but didn't really delve into the cause. Still, never mind eh.
7. Hmmm... I do like it, but can't help thinking it looks out of proportion. I think the original larger EB body would suit it better.
8. How's the E?
9. I'd rather see a version of WA with the voice and bass of Martin Turner. The bass player in the Andy Powell version plays a Stingray 5, it just doesn't sound right, all those classic lines being played burpy fingerstyle!
10.
Cheers! Hammersmith Apollo is 10 minutes walk from my house - think I'll get tickets for the May 2013 gig
See you there!
11. Not my teacup at all, but it still annoys me why it has to sound like a club remix from the off. If it sounded like a real, organic breathing band behind her it would be ten times better. IMHO if course.
12. I want one. Thanks for the video!
13. Argus is definitely one of my favourite albums in every aspect, but particularly Martin's incredible Thunderbird tone and playing - Sometime World should be far more well known than it is, such a fantastic bassline. WIshbone Four has some great basslines and tones, particularly the aforementioned Sorrel, but ropey production and slightly lacklustre songs let it down. "Interesting" fact - MArtin's tone is the sound of the Thunderbird neck pickup only, sent theough two amps - one clean and bassy, one toppy and driven. I recently saw MT's Wishbone Ash and these days he's using a Hartke head for the clean lows and an Ashdown ABM for drive, all through Ashdown MAG cabs. He also had a Blackstar pedal for boost when soloing - sadly he buggered up the solo to Why Don't We, and looked rather annoyed with himself. Soundwise, it was his classic tone through and through.
14.
Awesome. How can stuff like this be left to fester in an archive somewhere? Criminal. Anyway - this is proper prog. Atmosphere, emotion, clever... The current 'Clever-for-the-sake-of-it' Prog by numbers (Dream Theatre etc.) is a different beast entirely, IMO. It's of no interest at all to me.
This.
15. I was happy to hear a track from Babbacombe Lee, but most of it was a bit meh. Bring back Mattacks!
16. Whereabouts in Kent are you? I think we have very similar taste for maple necked P basses, Mel...
17. Bump for price drop and trade options. Make me an offer! Will also consider part exchange with Sansamp Bass Driver or Tech 21 VT bass...
18. I've dropped the price a bit. £600 ONO. Feel free to make an offer. This really is in as-new condition and has hardly been played. Updated with trade options.
19. Lol 'Laugh Out Loud' Creme!
20.
They were neck and neck with the Chilis until Under the Bridge then it was game over.
In terms of mainstream success, maybe. I don't consider the Chilis to be anywhere near FNM's level of musicianship and originality. Billy Gould though - great. His tone on 'King For A Day...' is just incredible. If anyone asks me to define bass 'growl', it's right there.
21.
Without You by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Badfinger. Most people credit the song to Harry Nilsson. A few wretched souls even think it's by Mariah Carey.
As I'm on a real computer now I can add the actual song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyBS_1vGwpU Such sorrow.
