1. Decorating's overrated...
2. I had Matamp build me a couple of 4x12s a few years ago - beyond friendly and helpful, and very reasonably priced. Beware though, only ring Jeff if you've got an hour to spare, he does like a chat! Sound as a pound. Incidentally, the guitarist in a band we played with in Leeds years ago had a 50w Matamp head. The sound was so intense our drummer had to go outside to throw up. Truly gut-loosening.
3. Is that the single pickup passive model?
4.
Good afternoon, all... It's already been done, and the result was pretty impressive... http://www.vintageho...bass/bas78.html ...I have the guitar version, but would definitely play one of these. (...and 4 strings is fine... )
That's almost exactly what I imagined we would come up with!
5.
Looks pretty well made! A bit "70s" for me but very cool. A bit confused as to why the top half is a 6 string instead of an 8 though.
It was originally a 6 string guitar if I remember correctly... The original was built for Roger Newell of Rick Wakeman's band - when Chris Squire got hold of it he had no use for the guitar part so had it converted to it's present arrangement. It's a ridiculous looking beast but Squire does justify it's use - on 'Awaken' he needs to use it all!
6.
His best record, I reckon, and the best place to start with Stan, is The Toys Of Men. It is absolutely superb stuff, top drawer music. It shows everything that Stan does, from bombastic fusion epics, to cool mood pieces on upright and acoustic basses, to funky, driving slap tunes. The production is top class and the cast list is as good as it gets. Truly, the stars had aligned for Stanley there! It still blows me away to listen to now.
How could I forget this one?! Amazing album, it's got it all - even Esperanza Spaulding.
7. I am attending both days - my first time. I will probably hover about the place looking very awkward and be too embarrassed to speak to anyone or try anything out. The credit card is definitely staying at home.
8. Journey to Love for me because Jeff Beck's on it and it's a bit more rock than the others. Closely followed by the debut and School Days I reckon.
9. I've just watched it - it started well but soon slipped into mediocrity. Please Please me was horrendous, they left half the chords out! The covers I seemed to enjoy the most were the ones by the artists I normally have little time for - Hucknall was fantastic. Fave performance was probably by the guys from The Fourmost, Merseybeats etc - a bit rusty but very authentic.
10. Sorry mate, didn't mean to rub it in. Good luck with the sale - I have an NS2000 which is essentially the same bass but a more traditional 'Spector' style body - it's easily the equal to any Euro I've played. Superb basses.
11. Agh! 5 minutes from me! A week ago and I would have had this!
12. I think the Beatles output compositionally surpasses all the Motown output.
13. I can't see the link at work, but I know exactly who you're all talking about.
14. A Clutterbuck.
15. This would do better in the 'For Sale' section.
16. You need to put a price up mate, dems the rules.
17.
I punched a knuckle off my right hand, once, in what was a truly regrettable injury. Not recommended.
More details needed!
18. I don't think it's an unnecessary thread. Some light-hearted bitching about poor service in Denmark St seems to be acceptable, so why can we not talk about the Gallery in a similar way? A lot of people on here love the Bass Gallery, and a lot of us have had appalling service, me included. The staff can attempt to justify their manner with customers all they like, but when I have my choice of amp and string met with snorts of derision by them (seriously), I can't help but take it personally.
19. Again, I have no tabs but amazing song and a superb bassline.
20.
Sounds about right. There's a video knocking around YouTube somewhere of one of his live solos from the late 80's, and it looks like he's literally been in the shower, bass an' all.
That would be the pure sweat of embarrassment.
21.
Not very impressive. I find Mark at Bass Direct very good. Huge range of gear and happy to let you try out as much as you like. He's also a big Dingwall fan.
Agreed. Mark and Bass Direct are everything the Bass Cellar should be.
22. I'll cheerfully never return there. I don't care how good the gear is. Such was the level of rudeness and technical ineptitude I was sure Jeremy Beadle was about to leap out in a fake beard. Alas he was long dead and I realised they were for real.
23. I've played this very bass. It's damned good. An excellent example of the breed.
24.
I have bought a number of basses from MMR (as we are calling him) and he is an excellent bloke to deal with. I have been to his home to pick up a bass and he is a thoroughly decent guy and only too happy to invite you round and show his collection of instruments. Classic and Cool is a very firm favourite on my browser. He currently has a lovely '73 sunburst fretless which is not on his site. I have suggested to him that he advertises via the affiliate page here as he has some wonderful instruments - currently a Zon bass which is so lovely even a dyed in the wool P-bass man like me wants it!! If he is selling something I would have no hesitation in recommending him. I'm just glad Limelight haven't done a late 60's sunburst P-bass with a rosewood board.
That Zon used to be mine! I sold it to Mark. I've traded with him many times, never had a problem. I like the look of his Limelight basses, and nearly went for one in a trade but eventually decided against as I would have been getting one on blind faith alone, which was too risky even for me.
25.
AFAIK Geezer rarely played that low though, songs like Children Of The Grave has the riff starting up on the A string while the guitar is open E (C# really).
Geezer would always match whatever tuning Iommi was in - so from Master of Reality to Sabotage he was tuned to C#, F#, B, E. It's not always obvious as a lot of the riffs would still be in E, only played higher up the neck.
