1. While I disagree with almost everything he has said, I respect JTUK's opinions on Rush - why should he 'get' them? I don't doubt that some of the jazz and blues tunes he could choose from his own repertoire would drive me to push pencils into my ears, and I would cheerfully say so but I would have listened first - just as JTUK has here. Ubit posted the Wreckers clip - JTUK listened, didn't like it and said as much. What is the big deal with a differing opinion? And what relevance is his opinion on classical orchestral music?
2. Excellent choice. I use a pair of the 424s and they are just perfect for the job.
3. I think the £3700 is for the 12 string guitar. The basses seem to be listed at £1950, which will probably end up in them costing the same as the current standard 4003. I don't think they are limited runs either, unless I'm mistaken. I love the look of the old 1999 model and it makes it much easier to pull off Chris Squire impersonations, if that's your thing. I do love the triangles and binding look too, but the original look is classy as hell. And it's a nice option to have.
4. Just seen the bass. A fitting tribute. Although whenever I listen to AiC, particularly Dirt, I hear an orange Spector...
5. Don't talk to me about trimpots...
6. Are you sitting down? http://www.mi-pro.co.uk/news/read/namm-2015-rickenbacker-launch-new-guitar-and-bass-models/019611 Well, more a reissue than a completely 'new' model but it sounds like our friend Mr Hall is listening to what players have been requesting for years! Imagine that in Mapleglo...
7.
My take is that it is proficient but there is no heart and soul ...and just no music in it. That is about as polite as I can be.
I disagree about the 'heart and soul' comment but understand how it could have that effect, but I really don't understand the 'no music' comment. Can you elaborate?
8. Veall conspiracy theories aside, these Corts are absolutely stunning basses. The nut was a bit narrow foe me sadly but everything just oozes class. I think Corts are massively underrated.
9.
What, the Dan Veall?
I heard the real Dan Veall died a few years ago and was hurriedly replaced with a lookalike. See the numerous "Dan is dead" websites for evidence.
10.
I raised the action very very slightly on my bass a few weeks back and found it sounded a hell of a lot better. Note clarity, low end and dynamics were all so much better. although annoying it did mean higher action which I'm not a fan of.
Surely you could just leave the action where you like it and lower the pickup a bit?
11. Pantera - Uplift, I'll Cast A Shadow. A great big meaty wah-bass solo in each one. Any Wetton-era King Crimson will be drenched in wah. And probably the most terrifying bass tone ever achieved by man.
12.
I'm losing touch here . Never heard of em till last week, when I saw announcement . Seems like Glenn , is getting a bit difficult to work with. Fantastic talent , but it has been said his ego has come back .
It seems he's changing bands as often as he does gear endorsements!
13. I always thought it gave you far more area on which to rest your thumb, as opposed to just using the pickup covers.
14. That's a monstrous E string!
15. Proof, if any were needed, that I was born 30 years too late.
16. Four classic issues of Bassist magazine direct to my door and completely free of charge. He wouldn't even accept a penny for postage. That's Kevin. A true Basschat hero.
17. I am now in possession of Dan's Tech 21 VT bass. An impulse purchase that seems to be paying off, it's a wonderful device! No problems dealing with Dan whatsoever, deal with confidence and good cheer!
18. 30 Euros? Cheeky sods.
19.
I'm a big fan of a lot of horror soundtracks, and I do pin the blame firmly with John Carpenter. I have been a vinyl subscriber with a label called Death Waltz Recordings who have reissued a lot of the Carpenter scores on vinyl oer the last few years, amongst other great and weird releases. A few personal faves have to be the soundtrack by Antoni Maiovvito a short film called 'Yellow', the soundtrack to 'Beyond the Black Rainbow' by Sinoia Caves (Jeremy Schmidt from Black Mountain) and the soundtrack to the Shining conspircay documentary called 'Room 237' by Jonathan Snipes & William Hudson. The whole synth sound of horror soundtracks that I like also spills over into a few really cool bands that I like, such as Zombi, The Slasher Film Festival Strategy and Pye Corner Audio. 'Drokk: Music inspired by Megacity One' by Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury is another excellent example of a soundtrack style album. I look forward to listening later on.
20.
The Legend of Hell House by Brian Hodgson and Delia Derbyshire (BBC Radiophonic Workshop bods moonlighting) )
Yes!
21. The African Hardwood doesn't look very striking to me... That Jazzmaster, though...
22. Just order one online and return it if you don't get on with it. And you get to try it at home with your own gear. The joys of internet shopping!
23. Anything by Goblin, particularly Profondo Rosso and Suspiria. Alan Price's songs from O Lucky Man Air's soundtrack to The Virgin Suicides is gorgeous - one day I'll get round to watching the film! I've got lots of compilations of various wonderful scores from the old Hammer films but regrettable few complete soundtracks. And of course, Queen's Flash Gordon and A Kind of Magic, which ih the Highlander soundtrack in all but name. Gimme the prize!
24. I once played the majority of a set with flange... We had a horrendous on-stage sound and didn't even notice. Apparently it sounded good out the front so lord knows what the audience made of it.
