Bass Effects - how many of you use them?
EssentialTension replied to BottomE's topic in General Discussion
Usually no effects. Occasionally Tech 21 VT Bass permanently on Flip Top settings. That's it. -
A very sad loss. His playing on Shadows tracks such as Temptation and Fandango really inspired me. RIP.
Sorry to be pedantic but wouldn't those two tracks be John Rostill (RIP) on bass?
Thanks for the recommendation. Does Bernie repair and maintain non-GB instruments? Can't see anything on his website. Danny
A few years ago Bernie Goodfellow repaired a Dearmond Starfire for me but I don't think it was exactly top of his list of priorities.
... I am FAR more likely to buy a bass from Clarky, Beedster or Bassassin than I will ever be from a stranger ...
But Jack, that doesn't actually involve a great reduction in the number of opportunites to buy a bass or some related equipment.

I was thinking about maybe getting the fretless version but then I played a fretted one in GAK. It was very very disappointing. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=59067

God I hate .... slap bass * THE POLL! *
Out of interest what's the tipping point between somebody simply playing bass and being deemed to be a fret w***er ?
Anything above the fifth fret. -
I wonder how many of the 'Hate it' crowd are any good at it....
That will be another 'Who gives a damn? Don't you lot have something better to argue about?' poll. -
Not to me, more medium/low than low tension
Ok, thanks Clarky
Sorry not tried the La Bella's. My only reference are Tru Bass strings which I found unwieldy. These are 'normal' gauges, rather than thick sticks of licorice, so they feel very 'familiar' under the fingers, have reasonable low/medium tension, and sound nice. Impressed so far.
Do they feel as low tension as TIs?

London Bass Show - who bought what ??
The D'addario black nylon tapewounds are great strings but just a word of caution; I had them on my jazz bass for a while, and because they're a pretty hefty gauge they wore the grooves in the nut bigger. When I went back to regular strings my A string was rattling about like buggery in the groove and I had to get a new nut (although I did just play with some card packed underneath it for a couple of years!).
They are only medium gauge? -
Um, opened the packet and the silks are dark navy blue. How odd that the colour is different to the ones that wre on show. Matters not a lot of course but just correcting my previous post. More importantly they are on my Tony Franklin fretless now and I like them a lot and certainly a great deal more than Tru Bass strings. So it's a thumbs up from me
Ok Clarky don't bother answering my question in the other thread. I've got La Bella black nylons on my TF - have you tried those? If so how do they compare? And what's the tension like?
... and a non-discounted set of the new D'Addario black nylon tapewounds ...
Have you tried them yet? -
The logo could have worn off - but let's say that's not common.

I've done lots of gigs for charity events for nothing at all or for expenses. With a band that no longer exists, one we didn't do was at a local Conservative Club. They phoned and asked do you want to do a gig for charity? Our singer took the call and asked which charity. The charity was the Conservative Club. No, he said, we'll play for £250. Some of us, me included, weren't happy about playing the Conservative Club at all, even for money, but the gig had been booked so we reluctantly agreed to honour it for the aforesaid £250. A couple of weeks before the gig date, the singer phoned the Conservative Club to check the booking. He asked if all was still on and was told yes as long as they didn't manage to find another band in the meantime who would do it for nothing or at least cheaper. At that point they were told to stick it. We haven't heard from them since.
No . Stick to inferior players , you dont get it.
Timtoomany, the alternative to the advice quoted above is to ignore that advice and stick to what you like. And it isn't sacrilege not to like something. I don't like the solo stuff either.

Excellent, I really liked it.
But there is also compliance/elasticity, which is different and can in theory be affected by other factors like string length including that beyond nut/bridge, and the break angle and friction at those points.
Yes, we've had this one many times before but here's the standard link: Lutherie Myth/Science: Human Perception of String Tension and Compliance in Stringed Musical Instruments
Just bought a new / used Hagstrom HB 4. The bottom, E, string seams a bit loose when in tune - the others are ok. Do I need a thinner or thicker gauge string to allow more tension ?
A thicker (or heavier gauge) string will have more tension as long as it's the same make/model of string as the one being replaced. If it's a different make/model of string then it will depend upon it's construction because string tension doesn't depend directly on gauge. Tension depends upon three things only: (1) frequency to which you tune it - that will remain the same with your replacement string; (2) scale length - which will also remain the same; (3) mass per unit length of the string - which will change if you use (A) a heavier gauge of the same make/model string or (B ) a different make/model of string with a different mass per unit length.

Never Much Comment on BC Members Clips
EssentialTension replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I got one comment and twenty odd downloads from 203 views. Mind you I've not often commented on other people's stuff so I can't really complain. -
To get things started, someone post a recording (if no one does I'll be forced to post one of my own, and you dont want that)!
(Yes we do.)

Deleting posts and provenance of equipment sold on BC
EssentialTension replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
This is probably the only plausible reason I've read so far for deleting any part of a 'for sale' ad once the item has sold. Personally speaking, I've recently bought something that turned out to be something I didn't recall it being advertised as, but by the time I'd received it, all relevant material from the advert had been completely erased and I'm left wondering if I'm just blind and didn't see it, which might well be the case, but not knowing leaves me with a nagging doubt. Put 'SOLD' on the title and leave the rest of it well alone, I say.
+1 on all of that. A way around the advert being deleted before you've checked the goods is to save the page early on. -
Tom, I liked the chord work and the finger picking stuff - very melodic and nice tone so don't change those strings. However, slapping just never does it for me - sorry about that.
