I've recently noticed that some people are not fans of Jaco's sound. Fair enough.
Yes, I'm one of them. Fair enough, as you say.
Have these people judged this on Youtube clips or have actually listened to his sound on the albums?
I've listened to the albums. I tend to like him with Weather Report and with Joni Mitchell but not the solo stuff.
The back pickup sound on a Jazz bass cuts through a mix. It allows you to be heard.
Maybe, but it's neither the only thing that cuts through nor the only way to be heard.
It also requires a lot of pressure on the string, and good technique.
I bow to Jaco's technique which is way way ahead of mine but you don't have to play like he does to have good technique - and why exactly is requiring a lot of pressure on the string a good thing?
Try listening to Bernard Edwards, too.
Now you're talking - Bernard I like a lot.

TI Jazz Flats or La Bella Deep Talkin flatwounds
EssentialTension replied to dickandjill's topic in Accessories and Misc
Is it ok to shorten a set of 34" bass strings to fit them on a short (30") EB3 type bass? I'm after a 2nd hand set of TI JF324 Jazz flats 43-106 and most of the sets that I've seen on sale are JF344 ones 43-100. I've looked on the Thomastik website and the AD and G strings are the same diameter as the JF344's just the E string is a little thinner than the short scale one . Also I've just measured the TI Jazz Flats on my Fender Mustang and the E string is JF344 thickness (.100") I presume thats because the strings go throught the body on a Mustang? Thanks Richard PS If anyone does have a spare set of these strings please let me know. Thanks
I don't have a spare set of JF324s but I think it would generally be unwise to put JF344s on a shorter scale bass. If you string through body or if the bass has a trapeze tailpiece it might be fine but you risk a broken string if you find your self winding the unsilked string around the tuner peg. The 30" EB3 will really want the 32" JF324s I think. The JF344s may work on a Mustang but I would have thought that JF324s would be better Are you saying you can't find the JF324s for sale on line? If so, try here: http://www.lordofthestrings.com/lots/RAPRD...t/11001620.html or even here: http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/23...ale_bass_43_106 -
Just reading the post about the guitar stolen in Poland and got me thinking. I really must take some quality close up pics of dings, special marks and must note down the serial numbers of my basses in the event of any of them being stolen from home, gig etc That's all!
Yes, and at least two copies of all of them.
Put what you like best on it. Tort only looks good on white basses, mint is nice, pearl white is really nice and would match your bass well. Pearl black is horrible.
I like black pearl.
The flea basses do sound like what Flea plays now because he does actually play one! Though the pickup is a bit wooly and only has one real sound, but swap the pickup and its a good versitile bass, the stock one is by no means bad though
I doubt that the one Flea plays, if he does, is the same as the cheap ones in the shops.

I'm considering a P-Retro too.
I just noticed the nut on my Japan Fender Jazz I got a couple of weeks ago is cut incorrectly. The G slot has a wider spacing from the D slot than the others are from eachother. Off to The Gallery to get a new one fitted I reckon. Typical. You can see it here, but in the flesh it's more pronounced.
Nice headstock though.

Thanks for the invite Jack but I'm not going to be able to make that night. Have a good one.

Vintage looks & sound & supremely versatile- take the head out -use it with a cab like a NV215 for a HUGE sound.... Also will do about 550W at 2 ohms.
+1 but get the 4 ohm version. -

I'm not recommending it but even The MGs used Marshall when they were in Britain: -
Thanks everyone, some great help for me. What I am trying to do is get my head around and trying to understand the basics of what makes a Motown bassline but it seems to me it can be pretty open to anything depending on era and artist. It seems a lot of the early Motown is kind of groove or swing based with roots in Jazz and Blues. So a walking type bass line in places but not as obvious or full as a Jazz bass line. An example is Tears Of A Clown or Heatwave which are very swing orientated. Later on it seems to soften and go more pop/soul and reliant on the vocal. Some artists like Stevie Wonder and the Jackson 5 seem to go more towards funk feel. Of course I could be talking total rubbish but from my brief listening today, this is what I seem to have noticed.
It is quite varied as you say. Interestingly, the ones you pick on are not all the same bassist: Heatwave - James Jamerson (on an upright IIRC) Tears of a Clown - Bob Babbit Jackson 5 e.g. I Want You Back - Wilton Felder Early Stevie Wonder is usually Jamerson (e.g. I Was Made to Love Her - let's not get into the Carol Kaye thing) or Babbit (e.g. Signed Sealed Delivered) but later might even be a clavinet.
