1. As well as the Fender, Hofner & Rotosound already mentioned, also Thomastik Infeld, D'Addario, La Bella, Pyramid, and Lakland flats have silk. EDIT: DR too
 2.
The Precision Special SHOULD be the perfect bass, but I haven't really ever got on with one. I don't really know what it was about them, but as Dave said above, I did once describe mine as 'agricultural' and I stand by it. The circuit wasn't all that clever, and no matter what I played it through, it just didn't sound great to my ears. It also didn't play well. Have they bought out a new version?
Yes, they have: http://www.fender.com/en-GB/products/searc...rtno=0194070700
Lakland is an interesting idea. I love the look of some of them as well (call me shallow). I'm guessing the Decade isn't all that versatile, 'cos to my tastes, if it was, that would really be worth looking into?
Chris, the Decade is versatile but perhaps not in the way you require as it's also somewhat idiosyncratic. Also, the Decade also has a definitely Jazz type neck. However, if you can't get your hands on one around Canterbury and you fancy a trip to Brighton to test one out you'd be welcome.
 3.
Of course he wants a fiver, Dave. He just doesn't realise it yet ...
There is a case to be made for a fiver in that function band but personally I'd be resistant. Perhaps we could club together and get Chris a D-tuner.
 4.
Lakland JO, preferably with the 35" scale. If that's too expensive, go for the 55-01 maybe? For a functions band, hell for almost any band, the Skyline option is perfectly acceptable.
Does he want a fiver? Chris, do you want a fiver?
 5.
Precision Deluxe?
I think Chris once described the Precision Deluxe as 'agricultural'. Although he was talking about the earlier edition.
 6.
Silly question gets a silly answer. Fair enough.
It wasn't at all intended to be silly. In fact it might be wise to buy two packs so you have back up readily available.
 7. I had a G&L 2500 for a while and it did do a very wide range of sounds. I might have kept it if it didn't have so many strings. So the suggestions of an L2000 could be a good one.
 8.
Having been somewhat of a casual bassist until recently, I'm used to only buying about one set of strings per year. But everytime I go to a shop, I completely forget what gauge and brand I used the previous time. I just rely on the shop assistant to tell me that "this is the gauge most people use", who then just gives me what I assume to be a random generic brand of nickel-coated strings. My main bass is an Ibanez GWB 35. I remember being more than satisfied with the original gauge, and assume I have inadvertently stuck with it since I haven't had to do any major truss-rod adjustments. Would anyone be so kind as to suggest a likely gauge for this instrument, and, whilst your at it, a decent brand to boot? Much obliged. Tom
It depends on all sorts of things, including genre, the kind of sound you need, and simply personal preference so I'm not going to recommend a string type or gauge. However, keep the packet then you'll always know what strings you bought last time.
 9.
And the picked flatwound tone in my head today is: http://www.myspace.com/ofmontreal/music/so...quette-71274522 However, given my undoubted expertise, this tone is likely either fingerstyle on rounds or a synth/sampled. Still love it though, something of the mid-era Beatles about it but with a whole lot more funk.
Sounded good to me.
 10. Oh, and it ought to be a heavy gauge pick like a Dunlop Stubby 2mm (or even 3mm)
 11.
La Bella Deep Talkin' flats are my first choice. I think the heavier the gauge, the closer you're going to get to the sound you want. Depending on what you're playing at present, it might take a while for your fingers to adapt
Yes, La Bellas are probably the best bet although I think Pyramid Golds or GHS Precision Flats can do it too.
 12.
...and maybe a bit of sponge at the bridge.
Sorry, I forgot to mention the sponge.
 13.
Good morning - I want to know has anyone had success in getting the classic Fender "Click" sound? I 'm talking about the recorded sound of Fender Precisions & Jazz basses on orchestral tracks like "Walk In The Black Forest" - Horst Jankovsky(???) and similar. Is it just a very short delay, or a reverb, or both? I think you have to play with a pick as well. I would be interested to hear comments and advice (apart from "Why do you want to get that sound" .....). Cheers, Stompbox.
Flatwounds and a pick.
 14. Looks very nice. Where are they made?
 15. Very nice, as usual.
 16.
Ed Friedland says the Jamerson had the bass up full and the treble up half way? On a Precision??
More likely on an Ampeg B-15 or, IIRC, on the valve preamp that was used in the studio.
 17.
Sorry, too busy buying and selling Fenders
Then it's nice to see you developing your business interests in Chinese manufactured instruments.
 18.
Are the 'f' holes (snick snick) painted on?
No they are real.
 19.
I've seen one in the flesh and was disappointed. It wasn't great. Looked very, err, cost-effective. P
I've played the fretted version in GAK. I was very disappointed and it wasn't because my expectations were too high.
 20.
I lead a very sheltered life
Yeah, catch up Clarky.
 21.
I have La Bella tapewound flats on my piezo-powered Veillete fretless. I'd never used them before and expected them to be nasty, but I think they are just the right tension and have loads of lovely mwah, plus they are kind on fingerboards and fingers too!
I have those La Bella black nylon tapes on my fretless Precision now although I was using TI Jazz flats for ages before that.
 22.
I'm disappointed. I was looking for something that would protect me from jazz.
There is no protection from jazz.
 23.
I'm sure they exist, but I've honestly never met a cover band that is full of genuine people. There is such an air of superiority surrounding all the people I've met. Even the bands I've auditioned for playing covers have been so far up their own backsides a sneeze could be fatal. Anyway, maybe think about getting together an original band with some mates, just for a laugh?
That's pretty much the exact opposite of my experience.
 24.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/signed-Bass-Guitar-/...e3#ht_500wt_949 Don't fancy his chances, but you've got to admire his cheek. It's a signed bass after all!
I think you'll find that as well as signed it's also singed. Shame we can't see it because apparently it looks good on the stand.
 25.
Would this fit a Fender Jazz?
I can't be sure and anyway it would depend on which Fender Jazz - MIA, MIM, MIJ, CIJ, etc. When I bought it off Cygnus x-1 he measured it as follows:
hi Dave, yes it is 10 hole no truss rod cut out plate. I bought it from a seller who advertised it as just a fender Jazz plate. It was for my VM fretless Squier Jazz (also bought a torty plate at same time, which I used on my bass, the pearle one is the same) so yes it phisically fits (pickup to neck pocket) a VmJ but weather the holes line up I don't know. I can accurately measure a few holes so you can check it against yours... front of pickup cutout to ctr of hole at top back corner of neck pocket = 87mm, hole at same dimension but bottom of pickup & bottom neck pocket= 99mm, back of pickup c/out at top to adjasent level hole= 25mm, hole at same dimension but level at bottom pickup cutout= 41mm, ctr of hole at bottom of neck pocket to ctr of hole dirrectly bellow it= 86mm. hope this helps...Nick
All those measurements looked correct for the Squier CV Jazz so I bought it and as you see from the pic it fitted perfectly except for the gap by the bell plate. I kept it on the CV until I sold the CV earlier this week.
