1. Best post I've read in a while, great stuff. Wilko too
2.
Ay caramba!! That is one stunning looking bass! I have a narrow width nut bass for sale, sadly I'd not be able to afford the £1200 cash adjustment I second the East (or other) pre-amp suggestion. The pre-amp can really make or break an active bass...there's some great ones out there if the stock pre-amp doesn't cut the mustard.
If you do some research both here and on Talkbass you'll find that the ACG filter pre amp certainly 'cuts the mustard'. It's a very different approach to tone control, creating it more than just shaping it in my opinion and not everyone is prepared to learn to use it and yes, I'll admit it doesn't suit all. But it's not a below par pre amp, don't assume that. Bump for a great looking bass. Peter
3.
Who needs a B?
It's not the B but the extra E to A I'd be lost without
4.
Then I would have sniped it before you
Likely true
5. It's been said before I know but if this was a 5........
6. Things have moved on at a pace now: Peter
7.
christ how is this still here at this price, thats under half what they are new now!!!! Someone buy this beaut, for this money....well even new they punch well above their weight for the price. get it bought someone..
I too can't believe this hasn't been snapped up long ago. Knocks spots off a Fender for build quality (fact) and tome (imo). Peter
8. Mmmm.. Ebony - nice indeed but what's that bit of wood at the end?
9. Here's the general look I'm pursuing (with thanks to Sugden for stealing his render for his 6er): Body front, holly: Rear, contrasting walnut (and very light too): Bloodwood in the sandwich: Neck is 5 piece, wenge and bloodwood: Fingerboard is a stunning and busy piece of birdseye maple, acrylicised: The scale will be 34" with a 20" board radius. Both pickups will be mounted in a single bloodwood housing with a P to the neck and a MM to the bridge with near to conventional positioning. String spacing will be narrow at 15mm with custom black hardware and the electronics will be a U Retro Deluxe courtesy of John East. The neck will be set into the body. That's it Peter
10.
Funny, because that's kind of the opposite journey to mine. I was listening to (not just hearing) bebop when I was 6, 7 or 8 years old. I knew who Ray Brown, Charlie Parker, Dizzy etc were earlier than that. I wanted to be Buddy Rich at the age of six or seven. Other than the Beatles (obviously) I couldn't have named a single musician in any rock or pop band. And yet strangely I happily enjoy "predictable" music, and as I grew older I grew to love it more and more. I remember hearing Deep Purple aged around 14 and thinking "damn that's simple....but it's fantastic!". I rate AC/DC or ABBA as high as any jazz artist I've ever heard; higher, probably. There's a tiny hint of the superior about your post. Ultimately your interesting can be another person's anything but and vice versa. At the point where someone feels that only more supposedly "sophisticated" music is better or more worthy, they really don't understand the beauty of music anymore IMO.
A 'tiny' bit?
11.
I recommend issue 67 ;o)
What (or who) is in 67 Dood? You? or another Marleaux? Peter
12. I'm all sorted and many thanks for all your replies and offers of help Peter
13. Many thanks, replied Peter
14.
Gaaahhh! The one with the guy from Florence and the Machine on the cover? Mine got "rationalised" into the recycling bin last week as part of our grand spring clean.
It's the thought that counts
15. I'm looking for a copy to read and keep if possible. If not I can return it. Will pay a reasonable sum plus postage. Peter
16. I bought one of the old Zoot 2 x 12 boxes from Mike when he moved into production with the PC's. There was a known issue with the handles causing a rattle and this was easily rectified by assembling them with a piece of foam inside them. It wasn't a cab construction problem but a problem with the bought in and otherwise sound handles. I put a pair of Eminance neo 12's in and an Eminance crossover and it's the best cab I've had plus it's also the lightest - by far. All Mike's cabs are CNC'd so the consistency of build should be there. I'm surprised about the huge volume drop mentioned above. I suspect something was amiss. Peter
17.
What is the point of having all that talent if this is what you do with it?
Sorry but I find your comment more than a bit lame. These carefully chosen pieces clearly show what talent he had. If you don't 'get it' that's absolutely fine, not a reflection on your worth or value whatsoever but please don't stand in judgement of something you're brain isn't wired to appreciate. I was listening to Hejira today and Refuge of the Roads is a great illustration of Jaco's less is more playing. Peter
18. I can't believe that this hasn't sold yet. It's the equivalent of an Audi at the price of a Ford. Alan's quality of building basses is uncompromising whether he builds a full spec custom bass or a Graft. It's just the construction methods, hardware and number of options that differ. People pay twice this for a knackered 70's Fender - makes no sense at all.
19.
My ACG is fairly lightweight considering it's a singlecut. The weight doesn't really seem to matter though because it balances so effortlessly. It's definitely best headed bass I've ever had as far as balance goes.
It's good to hear that the 'special one' is in good hands
20.
It's fine not to like it, to suggest it's without rhythm is just incorrect, granted it's a rhythmic language with which you may not be familiar, but it has great time, great poise and great musical expression. That it doesn't reach a large number of people is immaterial, it's still greatness.
Very well put.
21. I have one of these - stupendous bass
22. My Graft is light. It's a Gallus 5 and I don't like heavy basses. My new custom spec has Walnut which is light as the body wood (holly top and bloodwood accent). We sorted out a particularly light piece of walnut too. Basically good woods doesn't necessarily equate to weighty basses. I can weigh the Gallus if you're desperate for numbers. I will probably be selling it when the custom arrives too - mustn't allow myself to end up with over 20 basses again Peter
23. I can't believe you're selling this Paul (then again I sold mine didn't I (doh) ). It's worth every penny folks, and more. These basses are a bit special. Peter
