UPS - Unbelievably Poor Service. Avoid this courier...
Beedster replied to Dood's topic in General Discussion
Oh come on, never ever underestimate a courier. Parcel Monkey lost a Mesa 1516EV of mine a few years ago. Anyone who has ever seen or lifted one of these will recognise the challenge even the most inept of couriers would face in actually losing one; it's not unlike losing a mountain or similar large geographical feature (not least because it takes about four people to get it in and out of a van). But they still lost it. Anyway, long story short, it turned up in the back of a courier van in Suffolk. I suspect the driver didn't even notice it was there, it was such a big package that it became a form of horizon, probably requiring a county as flat as Suffolk to render it visible to the human eye. And I cannot begin to describe the dust and 'stuff' that was on it and in it when it arrived, I was given the strong sense that the van had been moving farm animals and manure as well as expensive Californian music equipment. But I got it back. There's still hope Dood -
MM USA SUB. Anyone know what's under the paint?

You can get some half-decent unfinished bodies on eBay that would do the job, not often that a pure 'ray shape pops up (might be risky in copyright terms for the builder0, but quite a few that are pretty close are out there? As above, stripping yours and using veneer might work, as might respraying it a less 'challenging' colour (SUBs seemed to come in a rather odd range of colours IIRC). -

Thanks for the above guys, much appreciated. Yes, whilst I've always seen eBay as fair game, I still feel that what makes this place special is that even when profits are being made, there's some proportionality to it, and this is assured by mods when they can and by the occasional less than well discussed comment in FS threads (of which a couple of members are masters). And it generally works. In contrast, I sold a bass on eBay a while back (not the sort you can sell here if you get my meaning) and the buyer had listed it at a 180% markup on eBay using my photos within minutes and before he'd even paid. I then withdrew it and refunded him, not only because I was a bit miffed but also because he kept insisting on sending a courier rather than collecting it in person or letting me send to him, and then I had weeks of grief from him, eBay and Paypal about the alleged £50 courier fee he'd paid, despite my telling him I wasn't going to allow him to do so. It's nice to feel good about buying and selling, and it mostly does here, whilst every time I sell anything on eBay I'm nervous for around 45 days until the complaint (or fraudulent 'item not as described' claim) date has passed -
MM USA SUB. Anyone know what's under the paint?

Hey mate, I don't (although I'll have a look on my old laptop), but as per the post above, it really wasn't attractive wood. I used stain and Warwick wax after stripping, and whilst it looked a little odd, it at least looked better than the extremely bland grain that sat underneath it. IIRC the wood was also pretty soft, and once I got through the lacquer it was really easy to find that even gentle sanding took too much of the wood off. I think that the lacquer is so heavy with SUBs that removing it (body and neck) might noticeably affect tone. Just my opinion -

It's what I paid Steve, the guy I bought it from was a real nice guy and anted it to go to a player. I'm doing the same. I keep asking myself why I'm not trying to make a few hundred quid as I could certainly use the money, but I guess the emotional/ethical brain is a powerful thing. Think it's sold now but will reply to all PMs once confirmed. -

Indeed it is mate, but like I said, that's what it cost me. Quick update in response to a few PM's, courier costs will be extra, especially if you're buying from Europe! I'm sending this fully insured so it's about £50 to the UK (using UPS Premium) and perhaps £70 to Europe. I'll refund any difference between what you pay and what it costs of course, this isn't eBay after all Cheers Chris -
MM USA SUB. Anyone know what's under the paint?

That was me, but bloody hell it took some work, the neck especially. All things considered I wouldn’t recommend it, they really went to work on producing the most robust finishes in the SUBs! -
Not happy to be selling this, but am offloading a lot of stuff at present and in doing so am trying to balance sentiment with sensibleness. I'm also trying to reduce the amount of gear I have because it's nice to have (i.e., it gets the dopamine pathways going) and just stick to the stuff that it's useful to have. What I've always like about this bass over and above the tone and the playability is the fact that it's 45 years old and looks incredible. However, in real terms neither of those facts come through on tape, and I've got other fretless basses that, whilst not having the same mojo or kudos, do the same job. This bass is in VERY good condition, frankly I suspect it sat in its case unused for around 30 years before the previous owner, IIRC a session player, used it occasionally for 10 years or so before selling to me. He sold it to me for £1000 which is a very good price, and that's what I'm selling it for here; however if it doesn't sell here and I have to sell it on eBay, it'll be at around £1800 (if I sell it there for £1000 it will simply end up being bought by a dealer and sold for £1800 anyway, and in that case I'd prefer that I make the money than a dealer does Comes with a generic case. Collection from Canterbury, meet-up in London or courier at buyer's expense.

Bloody lovely bass for the money, but if you need lightweight, please look elsewhere. I'm not sure what body the wood is other than that it is at the opposite end of the spectrum to balsa. Neck: Warmoth Body: unknown Tuners: Hipshot PUPs: Wizard (64's I think but will check) Circuit: Kiogon with series/parallel switching adding some grunt if needed Precision width neck (with beautiful ebony board) combined with considerable mass makes this a pretty formidable instrument which was once described as "a real man's bass" by a fellow lowender who made the mistake of picking it up at the studio (he's still seeing a physio). It's definitely more Jack Bruce than Jaco, more Jeff Ament than Jeff Berlin, and more Danko than Palladino. All joking aside, I've used it large;y as a sitting down instrument Will come either with Bridge/PUP covers and BBOT bridge as in pic, or with no covers but Badass II. The former looks better, the latter sounds better on this bass. Courier will be around £30. I'll post some more pics at the weekend.

UPS - Unbelievably Poor Service. Avoid this courier...
Beedster replied to Dood's topic in General Discussion
Quote of the day But it is amazing, the either simultaneously bring the full force of their left hand to bare on the doorbell whilst at the same time banging the door heavily with the right and shouting at a level that would wake a hibernating bear, or somehow manage to get the card through the door as per the above post.....? -

There are good and bad people, and good and bad practices, in all courier companies. My UPS guy is outstanding, he carries rolls of 'FRAGILE' tape with him and asks whether we want stuff labelled before he takes it to the depot. He's on occasion added extra tape to boxes for me when he thinks they look undertaped, and he even hand wrote a message from himself ("This is the collection driver, please do not place any items on the top of this customer's box") when I sent an acoustic a while back. He's under a hell of a lot of pressure and often works 12 hour days, but despite this he's polite and friendly, and never rushes. -
Thanks Bigwan

Anyone used one of these?
-
These came out of a fretless Jazz and I've replaced them with an old pair of Di Marzios. They're well used and the cover of the bridge PUP is either worn or has been replaced (SD logo has gone). However they work 100% fine and sounded very nice in the Jazz to be honest, kinda makes me wonder why I changed them, but such is life £40 for the pair posted seems fair, they retail at around £80 per PUP from Thomann https://www.thomann.de/gb/seymour_duncan_stk_j2n.htm and https://www.thomann.de/gb/seymour_duncan_sstkj2b.htm
