Not sure there is a thing as an easy Motown bass line., Even the simpler ones have to be played with conviction and a fine touch. Took me decades to get Jamersons feel right, fun trying tho.

First time I heard Sylvia as a 12 year old I could not beleive it.. its probably one of a handful of tunes that has literally stopped me in my tracks.... still does. So musical, dynamic, so interesting.....They are a very interesting bunch of guys.

For the same reason I cant stand modern guitar bands that dont do solos or middle eights, bridges or any other manner of song writing technicalites that produce good music.

Long story but might amuse some if nothing better to do. Last day of term at middle school in 71 and they wanted kids to do something in Fri afternoon assembly on the school stage, anything that might be entertaining, so four of us thght,..."how bout be a band and mime to a record"? Bearing in mind we had a week to do this. So I got dad to cut out two leccy guitars from some old board and Friday arrived. No idea how this happened but I end up not with a guitar (board) but sitting on a seat with a snare drum in me lap. Teacher queues up my friends older sisters "Get It On" and off we go with the other three jumping about like twits and lil ole me tapping this bloody snare drum... thing is halfway thru the tune Im starting to do a solid four four hi hat snare back beat on the snare, never done it before never hit anything other than my bro now and again..haha. Next thing I know everyones kinda looking at me with big confused smiles cause we're only spposed to be miming, and anyway...'You cant play drums...can you'? Anyway seems I caused a bit of a stir and suddenly Im the next best thing to sliced bread. To get to the point of this tale. Moving on 50 years after a lifetime playing bass and I suddenly got the urge to play drums again, or rather I can play a straight back beat and a bit of jazz but it got me a few gigs with a couple of bands recently. Fun and games. If you have any thgts about having a go... well, have a go.. nothing to lose.

Botox and Fillers (would you) audition related
diskwave replied to police squad's topic in General Discussion
Nope far to gone, would need a couple bags of ready mix to sort my old "lived a life" face...haha. But then Im never going to be autioning for a band with anyone under 60... and my cruising days are long gone. (apprently you actually have to look good to do the ships, thats y they tend to only take on young guys) -
I don't think its Richard Madeley? ( Hair cut 100)
diskwave replied to KingPrawn's topic in General Discussion
Ha.. did this when it came out. Its not Les Nemes and whoever it is is playing an SB900 just like my old one. Neat little pop tune. -
This. Sure he can slap like a demon, but he writes very musical tunes and is also a great singer AND entertainer. MK is totally the real deal.

Of course Nawlins, gotta stop having these senior moments! Anyway Ive just tried those two and its not quite right and such a nice walking run. Thanks again.

Hi all, Found this no name chart in the cupboard, any chance someone could tell me what it is. Thght it might be Baby Come Home but I dont think it is. All ideas much appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Its amazing the way the brain slowly packs up. As a teen I could remember multiple sets with several different bands but now Ive got a job to find my keys in the morning. I used to read charts cause I had to but now if I do anything I'll sit down and notate as much as I can...(no easy task even with Musecore etc) Failing that then a chord sheet with miles of scribble all over it is also helpful. Good luck.

Old dead flats really are the best kept secret ever. Currently running two pairs of Chromes, one set pushing 20 yrs the other about 15. Superb gnarly tone, pure gold. YMMV.

Lyric writing for beginners book - suggestions, please.

Does everything really have to be learnt? Did Joni, Dylan, or Bowie have to consult a set of instructions? Formalising a process is the killer of originaity. -
All Spotify has done is enabled the talentless to flood the airwaves with white noise. Back in the day you went to a producer/publisher and if ur stuff was dull and boring they showed you the door... Ive written "tunes" that back then didnt get a look in. Now I can put them up on Spotify and they're still crap.

Clearly no one here has worked in a pit. U turn up empty handed and all you get is a possy of disparaging looks... and rightly so. In the pro, semi pro world you have to take responsibility....double and triple check ur kit before hitting the road.

Well this is a debating forum so lets do that, and just to say. As far as Im concerned "hate" is somewhere I will not, and do not ever need to go. At the end of the day he's playing "bass". Ask Joe public what that is and u'll get a blank stare, Ask if they can hear it and the stare will continue. My point was does it maker any sense at all to use such insane technical talent on...."bass". Or have I got it al wrong and bass in the 21st Century isnt bass at all its something else entirely?
-
Im sure hes having a blast but what a waste of talent.. I mean its just bass huh. Here Iam trying like crazy to learn cello and I bet he could grab the thing off me and walk straight into the Albert Hall with five minutes practise. Hugely talented musician, extraordinary technical abilities and if he played a classical instrument he'd probably become world famous over night. I really do think he is that good.

Its debatable, every instrument seems different., My Sq CV 70's P has the most glorious thumpiness from C to D on A.

“Ready” Freddie Washington Interview…
diskwave replied to Old Man Riva's topic in General Discussion
Tell me about it. When it came out I was in a three piece funky outfit sharing vox with the guitarist, tho he did sing the Lions share. We all thgt this would be fun to do but could he play and sing it? Nope. So muggins here spent the next few months torturing anyone who would listen. Thank goodness mobile phones were but a distant futuristic dream. -
Thing is what tone are you hearing...studio? Live? I bet you anything u like he plays a bog standard J bass and that tone is all the making of the sound dude on the board... either in the studio or at the festival.

Hearing loss/ ear protection on live gigs?
diskwave replied to Tradfusion's topic in General Discussion
Ears are weird huh. Im the opposite. Tinnitus but my ears have become increasingly more sensitive over the years... I have to have the TV turned right down almost.. Screaming kids and crashing cymbals will see me hiding under the stairs...its all pretty annoying. Have to say tho the purple heavy duty plugs are the only things that work for me now and Ive tried those fitted ones too...but not good enough. -
George Murray - David Bowie 1976 to 1981
diskwave replied to leeeroy57's topic in General Discussion
Yep he really is a difficult person to like even tho we all love him and how he changed everything. Look at the way he treated Woody on that US tour.. and others afterwards etc. I think its fair to say he used people for their talent and then he'd move on. Anyway back to the thread. How'd he sound with that P bass thu that little Ampeg setup...I kinda know but would be intereetsing to know from someone who was there. -

Im 64, with the same story.. If and when I get a rare call to dep for anyone now I use the purple silicon 35db industrial ones and I dont care how stupid I look either. Dont mess about, its only gonna get worse. -
Haha... and I dont fancy the pong in the store either with a bucket of old chicken fat smeared all over the board.."Its the grease that keeps the funk" or words so to speak. Quote from Jamerson. Anyway just had a listen to Darling Dear....so busy but so darn musical...genius.
