  1. oh well, i'll try changing from synthetic to duck down pillows and see how i get on. thanks all.
  2. ok, good points lads, but technique and settings aside.... I also play a cheap but very solid 84 westone with an added kent armstrong jazz pick-up. I play them both the same, I set them both up, but one is very tight, very punchy and the other is....not. Technically, what's the difference?
  3. What determines the attack of any given bass. wood?, p-ups?, circuit?, set-up? Can i doctor my 78 jazz bass to get more punch or am i asking it for something it doesn't do? Any wise words greatly appreciated.
  4. Again, I'm not talking about remembering material for performance etc. I'm just asking whether, in a practise/study situation, notating stuff enhances your understanding of something you've learned?
  5. I wasn't thinking about practicalities really. More about absorbing ideas from other player's solos and improvisation. For example, the Dave Holland solo i've just learned. Doesn't writing it down give me a deeper understanding of it? and therefore more chance of absorbing his qualities into my playing..... ....or not. The consesus seems to be not. It's all about the listening and the doing. I'll put my pencil down then.
  6. An enquiry... We all learn stuff off records etc, lines, grooves, solos and all the rest, but how much do you actually notate to paper? Once you've learned to play piece of music from a recording, remembered it, understood it's harmonies, rythms and other nuances, is there added value in actually writing it down? why is this valuable? Love to hear your thoughts.
  7. Hello all you lovely bass citizens. For the purposes of further broadening my own horizons......I thought I'd begin with a quick survey of what you lovely lot are listening to, transcribing, who are you discovering, who's making you wince with musicality? (that is having a direct impact on you as a player..) Doesn't have to be a bass player, or even an instrumentalist, could be a singer, any genre at all... Looking forward to being broadened. It's all about the breadth.....apparently. oh, ok, here are my current three. Chris Wood (Medeski, Martin &....) Steve Swallow (John Scofield / Carla Bley etc.) Robin Eubanks (Dave Holland trombonist)
