  1. True enough, they emerged from the Anarcho punk scene. I was pretty surprised when they had a chart hit! I saw them once on a multi-band bill... the abiding memory was as follows: The singer was doing a kind of speech/poem between songs - intended to deflate macho phallic mythology.... about halfway through he pulled his trousers down and did the rest showing what an actual male appendage really looks like. The two skinhead girls sitting next to me were cracking up laughing and nudging each other because they'd seen a willy! Aahh, Happy days!
  2. Thanks for the tip, finally got around to following up! I found the Irie Ites site on Bandcamp.... some great stuff there, here's a couple which caught my ear: KING KONG - REPATRIATION General Levy dub murda
  3. I saw a show about Top of the Pops last night, and it featured the Ramones .... and they were inevitably 'performing' "Baby I Love You". Not written by them and not having their trademark sound, it always bugged me that when I mentioned the Ramones to people (even people who I thought would know better) they would reference Baby I Love You. So what artist can you nominate who is best known (by the general public) for a (or the ) song which does not represent what they do.
  4. Lay down your instruments Composition Challengers, I think we have the makings of a great vocal group here😃.
  5. I’d say that a bass player who doesn’t move much looks cooler than say a guitar player who doesn’t move much. Not sure why, I guess the bassist just needs to look like they are feeling the groove.
  6. Just got the "Yard Act" EP off bandcamp...... here's "Fixer Upper"
  7. I'm not really 'up' on that area of US punk..... but I thought all the basslines played were pretty good. And Mike seems like a decent chap too.
  8. My covers band go for the exact arrangement by default . Sometimes it doesn’t work out and we may drop the song or occasionally “do it our way”.
  9. It's good that the thread has progressed from debating what counts as punk to what counts as a punk parody
  10. all recorded, and as of last night all watched. some thoughts: Poly: One of the main genius of punk. Sad that she had issues in her role as a mother, but glad that was eventually resolved White Riot: I'd always taken RAR for granted, never knew much about the people behind it before. Good to be able to recognise them. Punk music appealed to disaffected white kids, and RAR did a great job of preventing NF etc from capitalising on that. Pistols: Fantastic performance from Cook/Matlock/Jones. Tight as a nats chuff. Equality great from Lydon, but more playful than the original days! Looked like the crowd were having an absolute ball. Damned: Disclaimer - I only like the Damned as a punk band, I don't get the developments they made later. Sorry! Sad to see the massive rift between Sensible and Scabies, seemingly about alleged sharp financial practice by Scabies. Sensible suggesting they drop the only Scabies written track when they did a playback of the debut album. Strange (and sad) co-incidence anecdote from Paul Gray. Paul was getting a cancer diagnosis and in an idle chat with the doctor revealed he's served a few years as Damned bassist. Doctor looked shocked.... He'd given a similar diagnosis to another Damned bassist the week before (Bryn from the Eliose era). Paul is still with us (and back in the Damned I think) but Bryn sadly passed in 2015.
  11. Yes, my thought too. but I agree it’s a great track. they did do a punk mick take :“Thank You” which is worth a listen.
  12. Indeed you are not a native English speaker - but you have a talent for creating some very good new English phrases (e.g. backside damage). So thanks for that. Would be good if you could coin some equally good terms for the following: - Someone who signs up to a chat site purely to promote their own goods - an annoying youtuber - youtube click bait Thanks in advance...…..
  13. When I first saw the tread title I thought it was referring to bass players who will talk at length about tonewood or compression
  14. This one is recent - last few months and has a bassline which caught my ear. Rest of the band are not bad either!
  15. Just checked it out - yes I see what you mean... simple line, but nice tone etc.
  16. Not posted a suggestion for a while, I'll that right now: Nuff Respect by Lady G
  17. Yes. Listen to it a fair bit, probably more than any other station. If I remember correctly they played Tomorrow Never Knows at breakfast time the other day - so that's not bad going!
  18. Daft Punk split a couple of weeks ago, after many years. So why do bands formally split up rather than just stopping doing anything?
  19. That was the soundtrack to my daily walk on Thursday just gone.
  20. No but I assume it was a result of the popularity of very early electronic bands like Kraftwerk. Not sure about that - my understanding is that it was intended as a kind of bass guitar substitute, the target market was not 'experimental' musicians.
  21. I finally got round to getting the Au Pairs back catalogue compilation a couple of weeks ago and came to exactly the same conclusion. In fact I listed to the whole double CD and thought how great it all was.... until very near the end when suddenly there were a few frankly awful songs. I checked out the sleeve notes........... they were recorded after Jane left. And shortly before the band packed up for good.
  22. And the 303 was definitely not invented to meet a demand for rave music. In general musicians find a way to abuse the inventions.
