What are you listening to right now?

Found this through a FB group...... pretty cool: Trio Mandili - Svanuri -
I'm in again this month....... /start of wordage for the voting thread/ The phrase "two wheels better" came to mind, in my case meaning bicycle rather than motorbike. The lyrics evolved to be from a female protagonist to subvert the old trope of a woman being interested in someone with a flash car. The Orwellian origin of the phrase led me toward the politically charged musical area of post-punk a la Gang of Four, Au Pairs etc. Not sure if I got there! /end of wordage for the voting thread/ /start of boring technical details for those interested/ Studio one DAW. Drums programmed by piano roll in a bundled Studio One kit. Live bass (old Vantage P bass). Live guitars (new Squier Tele). Keys played in via Akai miniPlay with a bundled sound from studio one. Bit of live tambourine. Vocals. /end of boring technical details for those interested/ Lyrics in spoiler

Good luck with the show, good idea. The only improvement I can think of is to devote the entire show to bass playing every single week Seriously though, my advice would be to make sure you cover various: - Genres (Rock, Soul, Reggae etc) - Era(s) - roles of bass (Groove, 'lead' bass, don't forget simple root note playing)

Ok, I understand your point. Yes, Brian was the real leader of the beach boys, seems like not acknowledged by Mike Love. -

Why sadly if it improves the official Beach Boys? Perhaps makes them unavailable to Brian? -
Yes, bass chat is a great place... interesting , helpful and fun. Helped me a lot on a number of occasions 👍 Even the occasional heated debates seem relatively well mannered compared to other sites I’ve seen.

Update: I followed the advice above and found a more recent (last few months) topic in the forum with a link to a Reaper help site with an up to date article and links. In the end I followed the link there, downloaded some .dll files and put them in the plugin folder. It seems to work OK now, although I just did a few simple tests. Thanks!

@BigRedX - thanks for responding! I’m on Windows, but record the video on my IPhone. I didn’t know mov was an apple format 😊.

Love and Mercy, the 2014 Brian Wilson biopic tonight BBC2 11.20 I’m not a big Beach Boys fan, but an interesting story nevertheless. And he was a bass player (at least in the live version of the band)😃 -
So I've finally downloaded Reaper, with a view to use it for video editing and maybe replacing my music DAW. When I dragged a .wmv file in it worked OK, but when I dragged a .mov file in it gave an error message ("Could not import 1 out of 1 items"). Of course mov files are what I will mostly use. I found the following tip on the Reaper forum: It's a bit beyond my technical understanding...... what do you think? Should I go ahead and drag those files in? NB: the link (http://aegiscorp.free.fr/ffmpeg/) is still up and has the files as a zip.

Thanks for the tip, Audacity is an important part of my musical tool kit....... ..... ... however I'll probably stick with version2 for the following reasons 1 - It already does the few simple tasks I need 👍 2 - I didn't understand most of the terms in the linked article 🤣

I’m not an expert by any means, but I would say EQ is your best “effect”..... eq in a way that works with the strengths and weaknesses in your voice.

Good musical performance. Movement etc by band was plenty. Worth commenting that the lighting was well done and made a big contribution to the visuals.

Artists best known for one unrepresentative song

I've got some isolated vocal tracks from them. Interesting.... well riveting really. -

Yes, and that song is totally unrepresentative of the rest of the the Frog Chorus’s work. -

Adding a bass might have helped.......... Actually a lot of Cornershops ideas were pretty good, but just fall a bit flat in their execution. The two songs I like way ahead of any other are the Fatboy remix and a song which featured an Indian woman as a guest singer. -
Interesting. I use Studio One and am thinking about moving to Reaper. Like the OP I got Studio One bundled with hardware (Presonus Adiobox) and stuck with it. Three things pushing me: 1 - Reaper does Video 2 - Reaper gets a good press on Basschat, but don't hear much love for Studio One (until now). 3 - I seem to get worse mixes on Studio One that I did from my old Zoom four-track Memory card box. I guess I'll adopt Reaper to at least add video to my tracks, and maybe record them in Reaper too.

Debut stinker followed by a stonker
Nail Soup replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Not sure if this counts, due to the artist having a previous career with the band, but...……... Lou Reed's first solo album was not up to much, but the follow up "Transformer" was a classic. Helped having Bowie and Ronson on board I guess! -

True enough, they emerged from the Anarcho punk scene. I was pretty surprised when they had a chart hit! I saw them once on a multi-band bill... the abiding memory was as follows: The singer was doing a kind of speech/poem between songs - intended to deflate macho phallic mythology.... about halfway through he pulled his trousers down and did the rest showing what an actual male appendage really looks like. The two skinhead girls sitting next to me were cracking up laughing and nudging each other because they'd seen a willy! Aahh, Happy days! -
Thanks for the tip, finally got around to following up! I found the Irie Ites site on Bandcamp.... some great stuff there, here's a couple which caught my ear: KING KONG - REPATRIATION General Levy dub murda

I saw a show about Top of the Pops last night, and it featured the Ramones .... and they were inevitably 'performing' "Baby I Love You". Not written by them and not having their trademark sound, it always bugged me that when I mentioned the Ramones to people (even people who I thought would know better) they would reference Baby I Love You. So what artist can you nominate who is best known (by the general public) for a (or the ) song which does not represent what they do.

Lay down your instruments Composition Challengers, I think we have the makings of a great vocal group here😃.

I’d say that a bass player who doesn’t move much looks cooler than say a guitar player who doesn’t move much. Not sure why, I guess the bassist just needs to look like they are feeling the groove.

Just got the "Yard Act" EP off bandcamp...... here's "Fixer Upper" -
I'm not really 'up' on that area of US punk..... but I thought all the basslines played were pretty good. And Mike seems like a decent chap too.
