The investment reasoning is absolute rubbish. I've invested a lot of money into my gear because I have to for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I have to sound good or I don't get asked back. Secondly (and most importantly), in an industry full of hobbyists it's an essential part of competing. For every good band who work hard and offer professional/original entertainment, there's a band of hobbyists who spend all there wages on gear and then under cut everyone else to get the gig. Example being we nearly had an originals gig cancelled the other night because another band with about £20k of PA, lighting, amps, guitars etc had rang the pub to say that they were free that night and offered to play for free. Luckily we'd protected ourselves with paperwork, but it highlights the fact that in our industry (and the current climate) the irony is that the people who go out 'for the love of music' are the ones undercutting original acts and drawing the opportunities. You can't get noticed if you can't get a gig, and you can't get a gig if you're competing with free!
"twas always thus and always thus will be" Will always be a problem when someone does for a hobby what someone else is trying to make a living at. While I sympathise with the hopeful professional (my son is one) I don't think you can expect the hobbyists (I'm one) to give up their major source of enjoyment to leave the field clear for them.
an average 'non-muso' punter will quite easily spot when a bass line (or any other band part for that matter) hasn't been played faithfully to the original but only other bass players will comment/critique each other's tone
You think so? I suspect the average non 'muso', non Bass playing punter, would struggle to spot a deviation from the original bass line except in very particular places (eg. the bass under the guitar solo in All Right Now) Edited to add: and if they do notice probably don't give a sh*t - as long as the atmosphere is good and the beer is cheap.

Personally I think that tone should be adapted to the song. (As long as it can be done quickly). Eg, the band I'm dabbling with at the moment does a Whitesnake-ish version of Day Tripper followed by Gary Moore's Midnight Blues, and I definitely change tone between those two, Mostly bridge PU for the former, mostly neck pickup (and playing further up the neck) for the latter. Can't really see either song working so well with the other songs tone. Indeed there are times when a tone change within a song is effective, though I'd generally do this just with the fingers. Mind you I would want to be fiddling for minutes with graphic equalisers and pedals etc. between songs - Just make you look a twat (in the nicest sense of the word)! . Edited having seen SteveK's comment above: I wouldn't want to be changing tone for every song! That also make you look a twat. PS I still love that I can say Twat and it not get filtered out!

Opinions on D'Addario Half Rounds please?
Count Bassy replied to Pinball's topic in Accessories and Misc
I have a set of D'Addario halfwounds on one bass. They are really quite sticky stings. They will give the sound you're looking for as they wear in. I would actually go for Status Hotwire Halfwounds (you'll find them in the 'online shop'). They are much more slippery and easier to use. They also last for years with a good tone. I have had a set on my Jazz for a few years now. Still sound great.
Exactly my experience as well. The stickiness does seem to wear off the Daddarios, but I went to the hotwires anyway. To my ear the hotwires are a bit brighter than the D'addarios, which is a good thing as I found the D'addarios too dull. -
Fender Urge Mk1 is 32" and an excellent bass, and a thin neck. Only available 2nd hand now. A mex one went recently on Ebay for £330. US one (different/more pickups etc., different tuners, bridge, electronics, etc.) should be around £600.

Used to be a real cynic about tribute bands but one night ended up seeing "Mark Taylor - A dead ringer for Meatloaf" at the old Robin R&B club ( we were meant to be seeing Deep Purple at the NEC, but that was cancelled). I've got to say that it was great fun night out. Have since seen a deep Purple/Whitesnake/Rainbow tribute night (3 different bands) and a Thin Lizzy tribute, and both were also really good nights. Not degrading at all, If I was good enough to be in one I'd do it like a shot. - anyone fancy a Family/Streetwalkers/Shortlist tribiute band??

The ceilidh band I play have come to the arrangement where we (nearly) always state the full fee, and its then up to the individuals what they do with their share, which may be to waive it altogether. This covers mates rates and charity gigs. If it is something we all have an interest in then we may collectively decide to waive the whole lot, but only once we've all discussed it,

The most annoying drummer in the world?
Count Bassy replied to seymourfluid's topic in General Discussion
and considering his athletic antics he's not keeping bad time at all, if anything the guitarist is dragging
Considering his athletic antics he's brilliant. Sadly, f you took him away from the band there would be very little left of note (IMHO). -
P.A. What does your band use? And is it any good?
Count Bassy replied to Jesso's topic in General Discussion
2 Shermann full range cabs (15" + 8" + Tweeter) , Audio Management 2 x 300W Amp, old Studiomaster Club 16-2 mixer, two unidentified foldback speakers. Sound is great in the sense that apart form the volume you'd hardly know it was there. Heard a few that sound better, but an awful lot more that sound worse. Mind you you often don't know if its the PA itself or the person driving it that determines the sound. All second hand by the way. -
Please make them ban Mustang Sally I think any covers band that does that should be taken into the street and shot
Mustang Sally is a cracking song. Possibly a victim of it's own success, but any song that is still being played after 45 years must have something good about it. I wish I'd written it. I used to be able to say the above and then add that I'd never actually played it, but I did actually play it a few weeks ago, so can't say that any more.
-
Well, the sound as the clip opens is pretty horrible to my ear, but most of the other sounds are very varied and sound fine (IMHO). Perhaps he should have started with a different sound.

For extended/Jam versions of all All Right Now I tend to do the chorus only thing up to big guitar solo, after that its gloves off. There are a load of things can do during the chorus and the verse beyond the original. Smoke on the Water: Most punters think the bass line is the same as the main riff, where as we know that it only follows the main riff for a few bars towards the end, so even if you play the original punters will probably think you've got it wrong! I think what I'm trying to say is, as someone else has said already, "It's a jam: Jam it". Make them your own - take them where you want to go. As for Mustang Sally - It's very trendy to be a musical snob about it, but a song that's still being played regularly after 45 years cannot be all bad. All three are slightly clichéd, but that's because they are cracking good songs.
A 3-pole would do it, but the 6 pole is the 'preferred method', as it's neater and you haven't got components floating around at the end of long, uninsulated legs that could potentially short something. No reason electronically why you couldn't though.
Also using a 6 pole means that the unused capacitor is completely isolated, Using a three pole means that the unused capacitor is still connected at one end. Wires connected at one end only are often called aerials!

What a great way to showcase different basses.
Count Bassy replied to steve-soar's topic in General Discussion
I heard pronounced differences on most of them, and subtle differences on some of them. It's also confirmed for me that I'll never own a Stingray
Perhaps I should listen through some decent speakers rather than the built-in to the monitor ones on my PC!! - or get my ears syringed. -
They mostly sounded very different to me. I closed my eyes and only looked at the ones I enjoyed the sound of.
Yes, but if you hadn't known that he was changing basses would you have sat up and said 'Oh, he's changed basses'. ?. I could hear differences (many of them not that strongly), but then I knew (and could see) that they changed. -

Well yes it is, but it did make me think: If you didn't know what it was, and only heard it, would it really jump out at you that the bass kept changing? I don't think it would to me. Count (Cloth Eared) Bassy -
Do you remember the first time someone referred to you as 'the bassist' or similar?
Nope - still waiting. To be fair I don't even call myself a bassist. If some asks me if I play anything I tend to reply 'I play a bit of bass', which is probably about right.

New nut on the truss rod would seem an awful lot cheaper. Should be able to get the old one off somehow or other, after all it doesn't matter if you damage it. When you say 'nut' its actually an allen head nut isn't it? Take the strings off, pull the neck back gently to take the load off the nut, and try again. You could try glueing (araldite) an allen key into the nut just to try and get it out. Apologies if this is teaching grandmother etc.

If you don't even give tab as an option, it may encourage people to read actual music. People who play woodwind or brass instrument don't get a handicap) but I do understand the issue of paying publishers. IF the transcription wasn't accurate - out by a quaver or something - where does that have you stand? [quote/] Other people have mentioned that this is commercial suicide and I'd tend to agree BUT I think this is a cracking suggestion for online content. With a magazine subscription you could get access to the extras online, including dots only transcriptions of the features in that months magazine (which would feature dots and tab to reach out to most people).
Give both dots and tab and let the reader decide what they use!! Giving dots only, or suggesting that they should, comes over as a bit "I can read dots so why can't you?". Why would you deny someone who likes tabs the resource, unless its to give you some sort of (misplaced) sense of superiority? Personally I have read music for trumpet in the past, but tend to use my ears for bass with occasional reference to tabs where my ears fail me. I would use dots as well for the occasional reference but they are not so easily obtained (which I'd agree is a shame).
