What a great way to showcase different basses.
Count Bassy replied to steve-soar's topic in General Discussion
Well yes it is, but it did make me think: If you didn't know what it was, and only heard it, would it really jump out at you that the bass kept changing? I don't think it would to me. Count (Cloth Eared) Bassy -
The sound this guy produces with it is wonderful.
I wonder what it would sound like without the effects though?
For £200 off, is there such a thing as a wrong colour?
+ 1. You can get a lot of spray cans of paint for £200 !
Do you remember the first time someone referred to you as 'the bassist' or similar?
Nope - still waiting. To be fair I don't even call myself a bassist. If some asks me if I play anything I tend to reply 'I play a bit of bass', which is probably about right.

New nut on the truss rod would seem an awful lot cheaper. Should be able to get the old one off somehow or other, after all it doesn't matter if you damage it. When you say 'nut' its actually an allen head nut isn't it? Take the strings off, pull the neck back gently to take the load off the nut, and try again. You could try glueing (araldite) an allen key into the nut just to try and get it out. Apologies if this is teaching grandmother etc.

If you don't even give tab as an option, it may encourage people to read actual music. People who play woodwind or brass instrument don't get a handicap) but I do understand the issue of paying publishers. IF the transcription wasn't accurate - out by a quaver or something - where does that have you stand? [quote/] Other people have mentioned that this is commercial suicide and I'd tend to agree BUT I think this is a cracking suggestion for online content. With a magazine subscription you could get access to the extras online, including dots only transcriptions of the features in that months magazine (which would feature dots and tab to reach out to most people).
Give both dots and tab and let the reader decide what they use!! Giving dots only, or suggesting that they should, comes over as a bit "I can read dots so why can't you?". Why would you deny someone who likes tabs the resource, unless its to give you some sort of (misplaced) sense of superiority? Personally I have read music for trumpet in the past, but tend to use my ears for bass with occasional reference to tabs where my ears fail me. I would use dots as well for the occasional reference but they are not so easily obtained (which I'd agree is a shame).

Warning regarding the 'Beatle Experience' in Liverpool
Count Bassy replied to Jazz Bass 65's topic in General Discussion
I expect the Norwegian visitors would......!
I'm surprised the Norwegian visitors could 'affiord' it. -
Saw Bill Wyman with the Rhythm Kings last summer and thought he was brilliant (as were the whole band). Did exactly what the songs required with no waankery. Excellent stuff. Edited to add that if you put two 'a's in the word above it gets through the filter. As does Twat!
Conductive rubber is normally a separate layer to the insulation of the core and you should be able to strip it back to stop the core and screen shorting. It's used so the braiding on the screen wires doesn't have to be quite as tight and makes the cable slightly more flexible.
And gives 100% coverage.

Played my first gig in ages on Friday night. The local land lady's 50th Birthday so we got a local band together to give a bit of light hearted support to the main band (4 out of 5 living in the village). Only a 7 song set, and featuring 4 of the female bar staff (including the birthday girl) on backing vocals and sexy moves for two of them! Nerves got the better of me at the start and I fluffed 'All Right Now' a bit, but settled in to it and a good night was had by all. No money but as much Purity Gold as I could drink (which was about 10 pint's by home time). No feeling a bit low cos I do't know when the next one will be.

At least it wasn't a real Fender. Seriously though, you do hear of these things getting back to the owner (as with the guitarist you met) so don't give up hope.

Hello there, Feel a bit embarrassed asking, but my lad's band (Stereotypical Blues Train) are entered into the 'Triumph Live 2012' battle of the bands, and have got through to the last 20, based on internet votes. The next stage is also based on internet votes, but could get them through to the top five. The top five then get to play live in front of judges and the winning band gets to support the Kaiser Chiefs! So if you would spare a minute to have a listen and, if you feel they deserve a shot at it, vote for them (FREE), I and they would be be very grateful. (unfortunately you need to register on the site to vote). You can hear a track, read a bit about them, and vote (FOR FREE) here: http://www.triumph-bandbattle.com/2012-bands/stereotypical-blues-train.htm and can visit their website at http://www.youtube.c...StereotypicalBT, or search for them on youtube to hear more. Many thanks for even thinking about it The Count.

Singer is flat, broaching the subject...
Don't like the idea of auto-tune personally. Seems like cheating.
+1. Not wanting to upset anyone here who uses one, but if you can't sign in tune then either learn to, or find something else that you can do. Fortunately I can sign in tune. Unfortunately my tone is like a bag of nails going through a mangle. -
- they do have killer whales out there but i guess the whales only come in that close if there is a tasty seal snack at the waters edge
That would be the photographer then!

Singer is flat, broaching the subject...
Count Bassy replied to jaydentaku's topic in General Discussion
I've just heard from this singer moaning about his band plying sharp all the time. -
Not really a paradox is it as it seems to have been adequately understood and explained. Now travelling back in time and killing one of your antecedents, or your younger self - now there's a paradox for you!

To me it's down down up up, quite clearly, but others obviously differ. But surely whatever 'flat response' equipment you listen to it on your ears are far from a flat response and will vary with age and the amount of abuse they've had etc. On top of that is how you listen to things. As bass players perhaps we tend to listen to the lower harmonics rather than the higher ones. I'v always thought that part of the reason some people like a particular piece of music and others don't is that, internally, they are hearing different things.
So like i said fret behind the twelfth
My apologies, I didn't quite see what you were saying in your original post.
-
What's the clearance over the pick up? Is the B string actually hitting the Pickup pole when yo're playing it?
-
I was always told to fret the string behind the twelfth fret as the harmonic doesn't take into account the distance the string moves when pressed down resulting in the note going sharp. Just my twopence worth, just done mine with peterson isostrobe App and the fretted, open and harmonic are all spot on.
Surely that's the whole point of an adjustable bridge, so you can compensate for the fact that you are also effectively bending the note by the string to fret clearance when you fret it. The harmonic is not affected and gives you the true octave of the open string, fretting at the twelfth will give you a sharp note, so you wind the saddle back to bring that note to the same as the harmonic. It's only ever an approximation however You can get the open string and the twelfth fret spot on, but other frets will be out by a small amount.
The bass is brand new from Rattle and Drum in Derby so the strings are also new. I checked the intonation and the fretted 12th was very flat compared to the harmonic and after adjusting quite a bit it was hardly any better. I'm a newbie to bass so wasn't sure how much i could adjust the saddles before I bugger them up as the spring over the screw is starting to bend quite a bit already!! I have one bass that's spot on but my fender precision won't get quite perfect either. Will I damage the spring if i keep adjusting the saddle?? Thanks for the info guys.
Erm, if the fretted note is flat you should be moving the saddle forward!!!, which on most bridges means letting the spring expand more!. If the spring is bending because you're compressing it then it sounds like you're moving it the wrong way!!

SO, you think you know your Basses ???, COMPETITION
Count Bassy replied to funkgod's topic in General Discussion
I'm a bit upset with this. With the title saying 'Know your basses' I thought I'd be in with a chance, but the pictures are actually all of other people's basses. -
Burlesque (there's nowhere near enough love for John Wetton round these parts)
Very nearly put him in my top 10 in a recent thread. Didn't in the end cos I'm a real Family/Streetwalkers/Chapman fan and I thought I might be biased because of that. (didn't stop me putting Gary Twigg in said list though)! Edited to add or Jerome Rimson, or Boz Burrel

More Ebay fun? sorry if its yours :)
Count Bassy replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
I think he's been perfectly straight and honest about what it is, so I can't see a problem - except what seems a high starting price.
