I do miss WaynePunkDude sometimes ...
Count Bassy replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I think Wayne got married, didn't he? That might explain his reduced activity! -
The fact there is a song written about this topic and that it is regularly performed, does not mean that anyone who performs it condones slavery, rape or prostitution. These are topics it is important to actually talk about and for them to be present in our society as a pointer back to the past, and for it to be ok to be talked about. Sweeping it under the carpet is the wrong thing to do. What about all the millions of women who are still in slavery and sexual slavery today? This topic still needs to be in the public eye. Are we supposed to ban the Blues? That is how I would talk to a disgruntled punter about it anyway....
This. Can we not do 'Hey Joe', or 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Whiskey in the jar' etc. any more for fear of condoning murder? Most of these songs tell a story. That's all.
I was in there yesterday. It was my first visit. I played 3 or 4 Fender basses. ................. I was looking for a more Warwick-like growl
Perhaps you should have tried a Warwick then.

I've always thought that the Dallas theme tune was a cracking piece of music. Also, I'll second Rhubarb and Custard - occasionally play it on my concertina.
TC do this with the spectracomp knob
Yes, I know. That's the sort of thing that the LM3 (4?) needs, not something like the compressore.

My youngest has a Blackstar Combo (one of the emulating ones). Sounds absolutely brilliant, but the speaker blew. Fixed under warrantee, but it does make you wonder what they are playing at? Surely in a well designed combo the amp should not be capable of blowing the speaker (could have been a speaker manufacturing fault I guess).
Well since all the effects and the amp sims are probably handled by a single dsp I doubt there much of a saving to be made from omitting the amp sim. There might be mileage in producing a preamp only variant though.
But if you look at the number of knobs on the compressore and distotore, they are too complicated for the vast majority of players, and there is simply not enough panel space for it on an LM3 (or LMT). (Personally I'd be happy with a good single knob compressor built in to an LM3. I actually very rarely use a compressor, but it must be one of the more popular effects).
XLR outputs generally provide a balanced line level signal that can be plugged directly into a mixing desk. The EMG preamp only delivers a standard unbalanced instrument level output. For the XLR to work properly the onboard preamp would need to have the necessary DI circuitry to provide a balanced line level output.
Or a transformer, which you might be able to drive off the normal output.
I did not even give him 3 minutes - he was driving me nuts. However I've just been given a link to the conclusions. From this, it looks like it is to be avoided... http://hackaday.com/...the-batteriser/
I gave up as well, but saw that the complete video was 31 minutes. -

Sleeves made of sandpaper ...
Count Bassy replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Am I missing something here? I can see no mention of this having been deliberately reliced. It could just be a bass that's had 50 years of use and wear. Remember that when bought is '65 it was just a standard new Fender P bass, nothing special about it, and definitely not vintage. -
By the way, check the QR10PA in amazon, it's cheaper there, I think around £140-150
Remembering of course that Amazon pay FA tax in the UK.

And he takes half an hour to say what he could have said in 3 minutes. I think he must like the sound of his own voice. -
Claims like this always smell a bit funny. Quite a good breakdown here: https://www.youtube....h?v=4iEshd6izgk tl;dw - May work in some applications, may wear batteries faster in others, potential for short-circuit, and claims made by maker very oversold (as many products can already use batteries with significant voltage drop).
The bloke in the video might be right, but his voice and manner really does my head in. -
Use a five string and avoid the use of open strings and, within a few semitones, you can often just slide the whole left hand back and forwards to shift the key(especially shifting up), . If you want to go further than this then you might want to consider going up or down a string , where a five string again gives you more flexibility than a four, but often the whole finger pattern can stay the same. Or, of course you can change the whole finger pattern, which also has its place.
My last band (a covers band) ended a couple of months ago. It was a long drawn out process to be honest. It was the best band I'd been in, very driven, professional attitude, good musicianship, all despite relatively little gigging experience from 2 or 3 of us. We put masses of time into the band in just 4 months, did one gig had several lined up, then the singer announces she was moving away. Finding a replacement for her was impossible, she was one of the best singers in the area.
Yep. This was a similar situation. We'd been working hard for about a year, had a good set list, and done four gigs as test outs. We were on the verge of properly launching ourselves to get more regular gigs, and it all collapsed. To be honest, had we launched sooner, by a few months, then there might have still been a band despite the tensions. So the lesson is: don't wait too long before going for gigs.
I'm REALLY curious to know how it would work out strung conventionally B-G. Would make a super comfy, easy to play 5er I think......
Me too.

Mini pots - what's that all about?
Count Bassy replied to Jono Bolton's topic in Repairs and Technical
Guitar pots are nothing special, just standard electronic components made by dozens of manufacturers.
+1 on this. There seems to be an obsession with CTS pots, and I'm that they're fine, but then so are many others (Bourne, Vishay etc) -
Has he changed the battery? I had a problem with my GWB35 and tried everything, including the battery connector, but it turned out that there was an internal fault in the (Duracell) battery. It was really really sensitive and unplugging and re plugging the jack socket was often enough to make it go again - for 10 minutes or so. However when that went on and off it did so with a big pop, but I guess that that will depend on the pre-amp design.
Define what you want out of a band experience at this point in your life and then decide if what you want is realistic. I have a buddy that will only play music he personally likes which is obscure by most standards. He doesn't understand that because of his requirement he will never find himself in any kind of gigging band. Blue
Thanks for the thoughts Blue (And everybody). What I want from a band at my time of life (58) is to be out gigging in pubs 2 or 3 times a month, and having fun. I am not a great or flashy bass player, but think I am solid enough for that to be realistic. However I have no illusions that it will ever be more than that. On your second point: This was the original problem, the singer wanted to do stuff that he liked (fair enough), but it was mostly pretty obscure. The rest of us also wanted to do stuff we we liked, but that your average pub audience would know and enjoy (mostly classic rock and bluesey stuff). (And before anyone asks that did include a few cheesy ones). Also, to make it clear, the guitarist and drummer both had very valid reasons for not wanting to carry on, e.g. pressure of work. Also they both work for the county music service and felt they needed to concentrate on that. Can't help but think that if it weren't for the singer creating tension it would still be going though.
