1. You don't say what bass you play at the moment but, if it isn't lightweight, changing to one that is the single biggest difference you can make. It cannot be overstated what a difference there is between an 8 lb bass and a 10 lb bass. For me anything over 9lbs is out of the question but, between 8-9lbs that still leaves an awful lot of choice. Below 8lbs reduces the field somewhat but, as detailed above, there are a fair range to choose from. I have several, some have been mentioned, some not. I'd add a Fender Precision Lyte to the list at around 7.5lbs. Hohner B2A and equivalent also. I also have Shergold Marathon that is under 8lbs although I believe not all are that light. Just under 8lbs - Ibanez SR800. If shortscale is acceptable my Fender Musicmaster is under 8lbs, as was my Epiphone EB0. I am sure your Corporate Clients won't point and laugh if you turn up with any of those
2. Bumping before I go orf for a week in the Balearics. Back on 29th.
3. I have a TC Classic 450 and a Genz Benz Streamliner 600. To me, neither is better than the other but each is more appropriate for certain bands/types of music. I preferred the TC for the heavy rock covers as the Tubetone was extremely versatile for adding overdrive on the fly witout having to fiddle with all the other settings and the way the overall sound was coloured I felt suited the heavy stuff. But for the bands I am in at the moment where I don't need much by way of overdrive I prefer the slight warmth and extra clarity of the Streamliner.
4. Aw shucks, I'm a hero Cheers Dave
5. Pleased to be the first to leave feedback for Julian. He bought my J Retro in the smoothest of transactions. Good comms, friendly chap, I wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again
6. I'd say that compared to the split coil P-type, the Magnabass is slightly more metallic, nasal and honky, if that makes any sense. With rounds I find it a bit harsh but a decent set of flats adds an organic warmth to the tone that is really lovely yet with sufficient bite with the treble up if needs be. I am not sure of the difference between the different Magnabass pups, though. I am the rather proud owner of Matsumoku's finest - a Pantera X790 - which according to the literature is fitted with a pair of Magnabass VII pups. But to my knackered old ears they sound much like the ones fitted to these 1A version III. I guess they can't be the same. Without wishing to derail the topic does anyone know? A quick trawl through the Westone site to match pictures to descriptions seems superficially confusing with no consistency between pickup model numbers and appearance.
7.
Perhaps not the prettiest models to have come out of Matsumoku, but eminently playable and well constructed.
I actually like the look of them - I'd much rather have a Westone Thunder 1A and a few hundred quid in the bank than a bass with a fancy name on the headstock made of exotic woods. I was really sad to let mine go when I damaged my back as the models I owned then were too heavy to wear for any length of time. To my surprise and delight I recently discovered that the 1A version 3 weighs under 8.5lbs and now have a matching pair of fretted and fretless and a big smile. The version 3 also has Magnabass pickup, which is voiced differently to the split coil P style, and I prefer it. 22 frets, better high mass bridge, slightly simplified controls - win all round.
8. I keep buying them - got to be the best value for money out there. Just acquired a Thunder 1A version 3 on here that has really put a smile on my face - lightweight (!!), active, 22 fret neck. Great necks.
9. I saw that. He can, of course, stick any asking price on it but I wonder if it will sell for that? You'll need Group4 to take yours to gigs at this rate! I wonder - should I get a refinish on mine, or leave it tatty? Inclined to leave it tatty, especially as the pickups are not stock.
10. And a bump for this 'virtually as new' condition black beauty Edit - Trades - I'd be interested in swapping for an Aria Pro II CSB 380 or 450. Black, single pickup model. Ideally the 'Black N Gold'. We can discuss money +/- depending upon model and condition...
11. Mike bought my Peavey Fury in an outstandingly smooth and easy transaction. This is the second Peavey Fury he has bought from me - I am tempted to buy another one just so I can deal with him again... Thanks Mike, enjoy that neck!!
12. Mike bought my bitsa fretless Jazz bass in the easiest of deals - he collected, too - no packing! Cheers Mike
13. I love all my basses but nothing quite does it for me like that woody old P bass.
14. Early Westone Thunder 1A just popped up £100 BIN. 'needs a service' - even so that is cheap! 15. Worth it for sure - surprisingly good even as stock. I had one, did the mods Fozza did and suddenly had a grown up giggable instrument. Lightweight, think neck, great tone from the DiMarzio, if a little one-dimensional. But if that is the tone you want you are laughing. Neck dive is an issue but a wide grippy strap helps. And you might find you like shortscale - my EB0 was the first shortscale I had and I love them! Edit - I believe my old one is for sale on here, a couple of owners further on. A black one already with a DiMarzio for £90. The Hipshot bridge has gone, though.
16. And sold bar the shouting. Thanks!
17. Selling my Peavey Fury bass. Passive, P-bass type split pickup with *very* skinny neck, just 37mm wide, also very shallow indeed. This is one of the best models with the line around the headstock. Mid 80s ('86 or '87, I think) this is in exceptional condition for a bass that is nearly 30 years old. Bright red, white scratchplate, maple neck with rosewood fretboard. Sounds like an aggressive Fender Precision, can be tamed if necessary by judicious use of the tone or stringing with flats. Weighs around 8.5lbs. I had *really* bad GAS for one of these a while back and Flat Eric of this parish sold me this from his collection. Shallow, I know, but had it been in black I would have probably kept it - I find bright red hard to live with. But I have too many basses and this has to go. Not to say that if a black one popped up i wouldn't buy it as I think these are *superb*. Nothing complicated about these - but everything about it is quality, even the tuners are really sold and smooth. The neck in unbelieveable. Totally knocks spots off a Squier but for Squier money. £150 collected from SS7, £165 posted, will meet halfway or deliver within 50 miles for fuel. 18. Selling my Squier Deluxe Jazz in black with matching black headstock and black ebonol fretted neck, no scratchplate, chrome knobs (volume, pup balance, bass/treble stacked and mid-sweep) and an in house Squier high mass bridge that looks much like a Gotoh. These are active - comes with a 3 band eq and a 'slap switch' that, as far as i can see, is fairly superfluous. Battery compartment is a quick flip one, works well. It is in very good nick and looks fantastic. Plays even better - when I first got it I had to raise the action as it was set too low! Lightweight at under 9lbs, narrow neck at 38mm and very shallow. Sounds like an active Jazz bass - EQ expands the tones quite nicely. Selling it because I have decided I just don't like Jazz basses much and I can get the particular Jazz bass tone I like from my Precision Lyte, so this has to go. Even though it is much prettier than the Lyte. Edit for price drop 01.05.14 [s]£200[/s] £180 collected from SS7, [s]£220[/s] £200 posted, meet halfway or deliver within 50miles for fuel. 19. Decided my old thread was a complete mess by the time I had changed things around a few times, so started a new one with new pics Bitsa Jazz bass - body unknown, age unknown, pickups/electrics unknown, fretless ebonol neck from a VM Squier. Sunburst finish with a few scratches and marks, especially around the back. Black scratchplate from the Bass Doc. Strung with flats, plays and sounds like a fretless Jazz bass should. Weighs in at a shade under 9lbs, neck width 38mm and quite shallow. £105 collected from SS7, £120 posted, can meet halfway to hand over or deliver within 50miles ish for fuel. That isn't earwax on the back of the tuners. I cleaned off the earwax yesterday. Ta Paul
20. Jon, I think the Silver Series were basswood or similar. I had an E series Jazz that was MDF. It actually sounded fantastic, just weighed too much.
