Just played it through my proper rig - Genz Benz Streamliner 600, with both gain knobs at 12 o'clock, treble on the bass turned up full. The hum is barely audible, eben when cranked up to full volume. I've now thrown away the lead I use at home! Nevertheless, a £105 fretless, now virtually humless, Jazz-type bump -
Beauty is most definitely in the eye of the beholder. For me, this is the perfect bass shape and colour. Simple symmetry of the double cutaway with a 2+2 headstock. In shiny, high gloss, plain solid black - you can keep yer fancy woods Shame it was 2 lbs too heavy.

These are very nice! Not for me, though.

Bought Dave's Westone Thunder 1A in the smoothest, quickest, easiest and most painless of transactions you could hope for. Arrived almost immediately, beautifully packaged. It was even in tune when I took it out of the box! Brilliant stuff - cheers Dave!!

Why so much buying and selling of basses?
Paul S replied to jakenewmanbass's topic in General Discussion
I am 'reasonably' new to the world of basses, having bought my first one about 10 years ago. Since then I have been edging towards my 'perfect bass' in what has become a fairly major campaign of trial and error (lots of error). As time progresses I am getting a clearer idea of what I like and don't like about bass guitars and what all the various makes and models can offer. But I am constantly curious about instruments I have yet to try that ostensibly 'fit the bill' - so keep buying and trying. The problem I have is releasing the ones that don't 'quite' hit the mark as they each have good points, even if they aren't perfect. -
Latest Hamfist workshop fun (Westone, precision and Jazz interest)
Paul S replied to hamfist's topic in Bass Guitars
Some interesting stuff there! Does the Fender neck fit straight in? -
I have a v3, but the neck is sitting neglected in a corner and the body now has different neck, pickups etc on it. In it's current format the bass with the v3 body weighs just under 9.5lbs
Go on then - do tell - what have you done to the poor thing?

Voluntary ban on myself in the Basses for sale section...
Paul S replied to Highfox's topic in General Discussion
You don't even have to make it as far as the For Sale section. I was asking a question in the general bass discussion, got chatting (as you do), next thing I knew I had somehow bought another one. (mods - it was advertised in the classifieds, I hasten to add...) (Actually it was a Mod wot sold it to me...) -
+1. You might find cheaper but you won't find better VFM.

Yeehah! Gotta love Westones!

Hi Geoff - maybe it is a quirk of the 1A version 3? Anyway, I'm not going to let a lightweight Thunder 1A go by...
Could it be a Korean made one that was built from a different wood to the earlier Japanese ones? Just a supposition on my part that they used different woods, but it could account for the difference in weight.
Logical thought but I neglected to say mine is an '86 and has 'Matsumoku' and 'Made In Japan' on the neck plate.
I have one up for sale on here http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry2412019 I'll stick it on the scales tonight, or you could just buy it and weigh it yourself
So you do! Would you be so kind as to weigh it? If it is a lightweight one I will quite likely buy it.

Does anyone own a Westone Thunder 1A version 3? This is the '85/6 onwards, Magnabass pickup rather than split P type, chromed 'high mass' bridge and coil tap on volume control, rather than via a toggle switch. Shown about halfway down this page - the red one http://www.westoneguitars.net/basses/thunder/ I recently bought the fretless version of this and was pleasantly surprised to find it weighs just 8.5lbs, rather than the heavy old lump I was expecting to put up with for occasional use. My old early Thunder 1A was over 10lbs. So this begs the question - are all version 3s under 9lbs or was I just lucky? Does anyone have a version 3 and able to weigh it, please? ta! Paul

Natural wood finish with actual bark, by the look of things. Very rustic. Bet it sounds brilliant.

J Retro in black. I think I am the second owner. Spec here on J east website: http://www.east-uk.c...j-retro-01.html Cost new £205 £100 collected from SS7 or £110 posted. Edit - Just noticed I have cleverly managed to obscure the second little toggle switch in the picture - it is there!

OK. Some more pictures and an update. I have taken out the preamp, put the original plate back in. Still a bit of humming With tone control full on you can hear it but it disappears around half-way. I shimmed the neck, the bridge is no longer maxed out and is useable. Put some spare strings on it for the sale - they are Dr Black Beauties, so coated roundwound. In view of the grounding issue remaining I am dropping the price a little to £120 posted or £105 collected from SS7. Bit more info. it was brought to my attention that the pups don't have any markings on them, so not the Duncan designed ones that you would expect to see on a VM Squier. So, body unknown, neck is ebonol VM Squier. I've decided to remove the J-retro and sell it separately, put this back to passive so new price (once I have done it) will be £120 and the pre-amp will shortly appear in the other items bit for £100. -

For sale my Squier VM Jazz fretless in sunburst. Lined, black ebonol neck. This has a black single ply pickguard made by our very own Bass Doc and is fitted with a J Retro pre-amp in black, so it kind of just merges with the edges. As you would expect the J Retro expands the tones considerably - sounds just like a fretless jazz should sound. Body has some scratches, some buckle rash at the back but not in bad nick overall. Plays nicely. Some negatives - when the treble is up or the high mids it is possible to detect a grounding hum that I have not been able to eliminate. Of course, touch the metal and it goes, but it is there nevertheless. Roll these off and it all but disappears. 'EDIT - 11.04.14, played through my main rig, virtually no hum, home practice lead now chucked! As set up at the moment it plays nicely with a decent low action. But the bridge is pretty much maxed out height-wise and would need shimming to get it higher, if that is your thing. - Edit now fixed. When I bought it the seller said it was a Squier VM neck but on another body - because that is what one potential buyer had told him. I have no idea how to tell this - possibly the neck/bridge adjustment is a clue, I don't know. Weighs in at a whisker over 9lbs. (Edit - should be lighter without the J Retro pre-amp) [s]Currently fitted with Status nylon flats, which I will take off -[/s] can fit flats or rounds, depending on your preference. More pictures to follow. Would like [s]£220[/s] [s]£120[/s] £105 collected from SS7 or meet halfway. £15 to courier in a box and well wrapped. [s]Might part it out - the black J Retro new is £205! - but would prefer not to bother and sell as is.[/s] Trade - Aria Pro II CSB Cardinal 380 or 450 in black with or without some cash my way. Ideally a Black N Gold, details negotiable. Any questions, ask away. I fangyoo.
