Rehearsal - hours in, and how to encourage other band members
rOB replied to Gust0o's topic in General Discussion
I think I need to take charge more and start steering this thing.
Go for it. If you're not happy with how things are then make an effort to change the situation. Good luck. -
It's a clash of different approaches/attitudes to music. If you want to be a musician, you play/practice everyday full stop. If it's just for fun, you don't need to do that. The trouble is, in the area between amatuer/semi pro/pro the two approaches sometimes mix.
Mmm interesting point. When you say "musician" do you mean professional? -

We do things a bit differently in my originals band. I am the primary song writer and lyricist so usually I will come to rehearsal with the structure and the bass, guitar and vocal parts written and then we'll work on it as a band until everyone's happy with it. Another thing we've started doing recently is our singer will send me some lyrics by email and I'll tweak them to fit with whatever music ideas I'm working on and bring it to rehearsal as a relatively finished song. The drummer comes up with his own parts on the spot during me teaching the guitar parts to the guitarist. Wouldn't work for all bands but is currently working for us. -
Ah but finding the right hat is the tricky bit.
Well - after all that, I took delivery of a 115 deep Ashdown cab today and it sounds really great. It has a bigger enclosure and give extra dynamics to the sound quality. It will get full session use this Wednesday and don't think I'm gonna be disappointed
Glad you've found something you like. This is what's important after all

Played the Soundhouse in Leicester last night with Violet and Hey! Alaska who are on tour at the moment. Really good screamo/punk bands. Very simple and effective soundcheck resulting in great stage sound. Ok gig, cut out a song second from end as our drummer's wrist was causing him gip again but other than that a good gig, nice response from the audience. Can't wait to play there again.
May be worth a chat with current guy first then approaching him.
Big recommendation for talking to the current guy before approaching the other guy or even the rest of the band. Make sure he's ok with it before you go any further otherwise he might feel he's being pushed out. I had major issues with a guitarist who I suggested we get a dep for when he couldn't make it even though I ran it past him first.

another recommendation for the OBT

Smallest was just bar staff, other bands and the sound tech with a post punk band. Pretty funny. Biggest was a birthday party with a covers band. Probably 200 people.

Saw the title and thought you meant this. erm... You obviously didn't mean that.
Our band is opening Fishstock in Brixham next weekend, an outdoor yearly event. The original opening act are now on in the early evening. We are then to play a local pub that night. We are ok with being first at 11.15am. Previously it has always been busy during the day with the Kids etc, but later on it gets a bit quieter as people want to head out and go to the pub, where we will be, again! On to a winner I think!
Sounds like a great plan.

I think the word headliner means different things in different situations. At big festivals e.g. Leeds or glastonbury the best known/most popular acts are on last. At smaller events headliner slots are dependent on when the crowd is at its best. As mentioned above people get tired and drunk this isn't necessarily the last slot. We like to play middle slots on evening gigs to give people time to get there but not time to want to go home. P.S. does the term actually come from poster design? As in the act you put on the top line of the poster?

seems strange. Why not call them something new?
For me, when I had high-mass bridges, the lows seemed to be tighter, the highs more crisp and precise, and the overall sound more hi-fi. I found that the high-mass bridge seemd to take away from the Precision what the Precision is famed for, but really exaggerated all that a Jazz is famed for. Don`t get me wrong, I think they are a good piece of kit, but ultimately not for me for the sound I want at present, with my Precisions. But undeniably, they are a much more precise bridge for adjustments than the stock BBOT.
as is often the case Lozz speaks sense on the matter.
So it turns out that my guitarist has signed us up to play a set of covers at his girlfriend's mum's 50th birthday party in about three weeks time. The main problem with this is that we've been a shoegaze/post-rock originals band for the past six years
hmm I've been in similar situations and been pressured into doing covers with an originals band. It seems like you're cool with it and giving it your best shot which is the mature sensible way to deal with things. I did not deal with it in that fashion.
signal split between two Orange Terror 500's, each powering 2x SP210's. One has 12AT7 valves for clean, and the other has the stock 12AX7's for crunch.
oo that sounds like it would be really good. Think I might go for taller cabs if we're talking dream rigs. Mine would be similar but would take itself to and from gigs (or be pocket sized) so that I can show up on a bike (or I might ride the rig to the venue). It would also have a multi fx unit with every possible effect and which read my mind and alter my sound accordingly. Am I asking too much?
