1.
I suspect the Bass Doc will be your man there... http://basschat.co.u...5-the-bass-doc/
Yup, got black pickup covers if required. I wouldn't get too enthusiastic about the cheap white one from the bay however - the build with bar magnets on the bottom denotes one of the most basic oriental jobbies - much better to go with ones with alnico slugs. BTW your neck and body build is going along nicely H.
2. Hmmm....... got me there Holmes. Are we sure they were factory fitted as opposed to modified by the first owner? If you are the original owner of one of them, may we perhaps assume the maker out East did a deal with DiMarzio when they were first being established? We may never know............
3. Don't beat yourself up over the mistaken DM identification - nobody but nobody knows everything. Just so happens I know more than most The Bass Doc. (*removing covers from pickups since 1964*)
4. FWIW I've only ever seen 'Patent applied For' stickers on genuine 70s DiMarzios - never seen oriental copies carrying such a statement - it's a USA thing. If it's possible to remove one of the cream covers they would have 'DiMarzio' stamped on the inside as extra proof.
5.
Well, if you turn it through 90 degrees...
Just tried that.......it's upside down
6. That illustration of true temperament frets confirms that 'normal' fretting is not an absolutely exacting procedure. In other words 'near enough is near enough'. Consider how Strat players for instance mess about with the individual saddles to give each string a different speaking length and then check out the bridge on a classical/Spanish guitar - it's a plain bar! - still sounds in tune though. If you're looking for pitch perfection on every string, every fret, you could be driven round the bend looking at your tuner.
7. The explanation for the modifications is quite easy - it made John Entwhistle as happy as a man with three knobs.
8.
I still personally think the Stingray is much more versatile, and much more exciting to play!
So, many years after inventing the Precision, Leo was still 'getting it right'
9. Not sure about boiling an egg but, in the right hands, it can cook up a storm.
10. OK it's ugly and heavy but sounds superb. My Wallace AC5075XT:- Built around 1969. 2 x KT88s. In the early 70s when I was young and fit I used to gig a stereo wired bass into two AC100XTs (a lot bigger and heavier!) plus two Burman 4x12s.

13. Cheers Tom. 'Twas an interesting project. I do like a challenge. (anyone wanting a five pickup bass with all bells and whistles can F...R....O.. ).

15.
out of curiosity how much would one cost for a jazz bass but with a cut out for a musicman humbucker in plain black?
PM'd.
16. ............can do a similar look with the gold finished plastic marketed by WD Music though.
17. Sorry guys, custom anodised not possible as far as I know without going to 'out of proportion' expense through specialist companies.

20. Shouldn't come accross as too distorted though. The sound will be well cushioned.
21.

"Wish I'd found out about the neck dive before buying the thing"
22.
For sure. Even if this is not a slab board, but one of the very first curved board Jazzies :-)
1st record I have of both a slab board and a curved board is the month of JUNE '62 so certainly by August they were curved only. This is a very nice example indeed! My reckoning on the stack knob -v- 3 knob system is that Leo Fender didn't simply change things just for the hell of it but to improve. Therefore I've never got too excited about acquiring a stack knob (Jaco's was one and he changed it).
23. I think that once people know that you're a bass player then they make certain assumptions about you. I usually say "Yes, like a horse".
