1. +1 for the TH500.... ....but why change?
2. I'm a big Fender fan and I always have been. All my bass heroes played Fender's, they were used on nearly all my favourite records and I have owned one since I was 19. I just haven't found a Fender 5 string that I prefer over the competition.
3. My school band, a 7 piece soul/blues band, predating the Blues Brothers by many years, had a 30 years get together and that was rather long time ago! Several of us went pro and most of us are still playing. Funnily enough the tensions that were the cause of the original split are still there. I think we deal with it better these days. We arranged another gig for last year but health problems cancelled that. Maybe this year.
4. It was James Jamerson who played lying on his back. Why buy another bass when you only need a shorter strap? Strap locks will make it easier to switch from one strap to the other.
5. I compared my Lull P5 with Happy Jack's and while they both sounded great, when played together his sounded better. Enough to make me track down why. I finally found the difference; I was using my usual DR Lo-Riders and he was using flats. I put Lakland flats on (my first set since 1971) and I was surprised at how much better the bass sounded. I've still got DR's on the Lakland but I might just try flats next time.
6. Presumably you've made contacts by being in your Rock band? It should be easier to interest promoters in your Funk band if they've just seen you gigging in a good Rock band.
7. Sounds like you did good enough job to cover the bass department and, even if you were uncomfortable, I don't think the audience would be aware of the problems you were experiencing. I had a dep before Christmas and I was made to feel that there was something lacking in me when I asked for a set list. Apparently the guitarist/singer starts the numbers and "we just play along"! I gave them 2 weeks to come up with a set list, which they didn't, so I took another gig. I'd rather get it right every time, but the gig was paying enough for me to completely busk the night if something else hadn't come up, and if they didn't care about the band or gig who am I to worry. I doubt if they'll be asking again, which doesn't bother me.
8. Well the new year has only just started and I've found another great band. I've never heard of these guys before but I like the band especially the bass player.
9. Gig in the Rock band and develop the Funk band. When it's ready it can take over.
10. That's great. Prince is a fantastic musician, writer, producer and performer. An absolutely awful person to work for but everything he plays sounds so good.
11. What did you buy and sell this year? In Wolfcraft 5500 trolley Aguilar TH500 Bergantino CN212 Out Rob Allen MB-2 Bergantino AE210 x 2
12. BW with the Valentinos - It's All Over Now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf-oiLUzb1k Love this........ just gave me goose-bumps listening to it.
13. I'm sure an EBS combo would be just fine. I did gig last week which provided the backline, an EBS Reidmar and 2 x 110 cabs. I've never been tempted by EBS but at lowish volume and with the character filter button pressed in the whole thing sounded pretty good.
14. No doubt it's a fantastic instrument. Nino Valenti used to work for Roger Sadowsky so it's not surprising he has a reputation for making great basses. Over on Talkbass he's regarded as a class act. I know a Sadowsky player who is very happy using Markbass, but if I was buying a new rig to match the quality of this bass I'd be looking at Bergantino, Aguilar and Barefaced.
15.
....I was thinking about getting a 5 string modified squier Jazz bass (£310)....
I played this bass in a shop and preferred it to the £600 Fender model. I'd find a bass that plays well and feels good. You can always upgrade the pickups if you need it to sound better.
16.
....You have piqued my interest!....
Happy to oblige.... http://mikelull.com/ http://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Mike_Lull.html
17.
....and I was glad to get that much for it in the end !....
Nearly 20 years ago I was standing in the Bass Centre when a guy came in trying to sell a Mk1 Wal for about £300. Nick told him they weren't interested!! How times have changed!
18.
....The generic modern kind of sound is not what I am aiming for....
Then can I interest you in Mike Lull basses? Beautifully made and sound like you've just stepped into Life On Mars.
19. A gig's a gig. You'll live! At least you won't be on YouTube!
20. There's a GB Rumour in the FS section which I would put in the same league as an Wal and Overwater.
21. Your average lead singer is restricted to the keys that "come naturally" because they don't practice, probably haven't had lessons and so have limited ability and range. Anyone who takes singing seriously will train and practice and as a result will extend their range to the point where they will be able to sing in all keys.
22. I played an SR5 for awhile but stopped using it because for some reason I didn't get on with the neck. The best sound I heard from an SR5 was an HH with Piezo bridge. That sounded very meaty and had a flexible range of tones.
