1. I think more people should suffer from TAS, Technique Acquisition Syndrome. Next time you see some gear you want but don't need spend half on lessons and save the other half. You’ll end up a better and richer bass player.
2. Stereo bass is an idea that might look good on paper but in practise is a gimmick, a solution without a problem.
3. I'd get a 410 or 2 210's. You'll get a lot more punch and attack out of the 10's. I don't play anything like punk, but with my LM2 I used 2 Aguilar GS112's and then an Epifani 410. It's a great little amp and made all my cabs sound good.
4. It's only stuff! I had a couple of very nice basses (Wal and Rob Allen), but I didn't play them much so I sold them. Don't get sentimental over gear, then it's easy.
5. Unfortunately EV's have always been expensive, but, IMO, they are worth it. If the kits are readily available I'd definitely recone the one you have. I used EV's in every cab I owned between 1989 and 2007 (MusicMan 212, Dynacord 115 and Mesa Boogie 115 and 210). I miss them. I wish EV did lightweight speakers.
6. Find out what you need and get your leads from OBBM, BC member.
7.
....You may want to listen to THIS . Interview with the bassist, focussing on gear....
....sorry. I managed 2 mins.
8. .... and if it's hired, and broken, why wasn't it replaced?
9. You must be talking about TC. They are the only heads I know of which run to a recommended max of 2.7, which is an odd number because most amps will be 4 ohm or 2 ohm. TC say they are designed to run 3 8 ohm cabs. Maybe they can run at 2 ohm but TC think it's marginal. You could try it at low volume but high volume, where the excessive heat is generated, might cause the amp to go into Protect mode .Read the manual. There is info about the Protect mode.
10. Have you bought the cabs yet? IMO, a 500 watt amp with 2 12" cabs is an ideal rig, but I'd always get a cab with 2 sockets so you can daisy chain if you need to.
11. +1 The LM3 is a great amp and does have 2 speaker ouputs. It has 1 speakon and one 1/4", so you just need 2 different leads.
12. For Hifi they used to advise spending 50% of your budget on the speakers. As Liam says a bad cab won't make anything sound good. I'd take your own amp to this gig.
13. Proper switch cleaner for the pot. Maybe WD40 for the hinge.
14.
....They are such nice blokes, I feel a bit rotten for saying no....
Then say yes. On the other hand, if you really don't want to do it just call and tell them.
15. I don't swap basses on a gig. I don't see the point. As always, the audience gets me playing with my sound on every number. I don't believe they, or even most of the bands, are really bothered about the difference between my Lull P and Lakland. As long as it sounds good they are happy. I know this because I ask them. I've done my homework and bought the best sounding gear I can find. After that I'm more interested in how I'm playing than what instrument I'm playing. I do get compliments on my sound and the current band likes what I do (again, I asked). I've been told to turn up and told turn down but, so far, no one has ever asked me to change my sound.
16. The CN112 cabs are 8 ohms each. I sometimes run my 3 AE112 cabs (2.7 ohm) with my Thunderfunk TFB750. It's comfortable running down to 2 ohms.
17. How do you set your volume controls? A lot of amps get hot, but that's what the fans are there for. Some amps use the metal casing as part of the heat sink, so they're designed to get hot. What amps really don't like is sudden changes of temperature (ie if an amp is very cold, switch it on but don't play it for about 10 mins so it can warm up slowly) but there shouldn't be much you can do in normal operation that would damage them. You should only need a Thumpinator if you are seeing excessive movement in the cones.
18. A 5 string is far more versatile...... but why limit yourself to 1 bass?
19. You can't damage an amp with tone, but if you're running this amp to its limits that's an indicator that you need a more powerful amp. Can your speakers handle all this 30hz output you're generating? That's where I'd be worried about damage.
20. So, you like the bass you've got but are starting to see its limitations. That's fine, you're gowing out of it because you're getting more experienced. If you really have to have a short scale bass and want to upgrade, look at an EB-3. I think you should expand your horizons a little and try Fenders and Laklands. Second hand would be best. It would be a waste of money to buy new at this stage of your playing career.
21. Just get a new speaker off the internet. It won't matter that the speaker isn't optimised for your cab. The original probably wasn't either. IMO, adding an extension cab is the best way of getting a better tone out of your combo.
22. I lived in Chiswick surrounded by Youngs and Fullers pubs.
23. I had a boogie 210 and it sounded pretty good. I'd get the speaker reconed. Westside distribution are the Boogie importers. www.westsidedistribution.com
