Popped up while I was typing. Being paid cash is fine, it's the refusal to accept invoices which makes it hard. And I play up to five gigs a week, with no other income, all local venues this year. I can invoice a couple pubs and a handful of weddings, but HMRC might like to know how I got by for '16-'17. Telling them it was all cash, and givng them a record of it all which I wrote down myself might not get brushed off quite so smoothly. Maybe there's more provision for earning cash out of the landlords pocket than I thought, but I would still welcome a more invoice friendly system.
never understood why landlords pay a band 'off the books' after all it's tax deductable for them, on the other hand if you don't sign a receipt for the money it's a gig done for free as far as some bands are concerned. Of course if it's your main source of income you have to justify your life style as opposed to your declared income, a lot of tax avoiders get caught out like that
I can't really see a problem for the run of the mill semi pro musician, as has been pointed out we probably lose out financially when equipment and travel are factored in. I believe this is aimed more at companies using the current legislation to avoid employee rights, such as a decent contract with NI payments, holiday pay, sick pay, guaranteed hours for those who want it. etc. It would make a nice change if the tax loopholes were closed to stop the companies and people who can more than afford to pay there tax bill, rather than chasing a part time window cleaner or a semi pro musician who is probably losing money when all expenses are taken into account. It simply makes it look like the administration are doing something if they chase the little guy. What is being suggested looks like a step in the right direction to me.
Playing devils advocate, if all the small time tax dodgers were added up it would probably be far bigger tax loss than what the likes of Starbucks and Amazon cost the exchequer, you're talking billions of pounds, that's why the Government hates cash, but it'll be a long time before people start paying the window cleaner in anything other than cash. Slightly different point, some pubs want to pay in cash because it costs them to bank money (not as much as paying by card costs them though), they like to get rid of it, hence cashback
The usual then..... Kick drum and vox at ten with everything else at two....and like the op said all of it through the highest tech money can buy....dear oh dear. Also I have never understood the term ..."our own sound guy"....how difficult is it to eyeball the instruments on stage, then eyeball the channels and then loose the mud and get it all crisp and shiny....99% of bands sound roughly the same anyway cause they play the same instruments. I stand to be enlightened of course.
well if you don't want the kick at 10 and everything else at 2 you need your own sound guy, apparently.
Live sound seems to have turned into 'drums as loud as possible and kick louder still', even in small venues. It's spoiled more gigs for me than I care to remember.
I'm afraid so, I don't go to many paying gigs because of it, if it's not the kick drum that's way too loud it's the snare, or even both, drowning out the vocals in some cases

happens all the time, but I'm surprised the Killers don't have there own sound guy, I've heard support acts sound crap and the main act is good, either by design or incompetence, I've told this story before I was at a smallish festival a couple of years ago and all weekend the trebley kick was dominating the sound, the bass a dull thud with no definition, The Ruts DC came on great sound everything spot on, I was so intrigued I messaged the Ruts bassist Seg Jennings and asked him, his reply was they'd got their own sound engineer, so in that case it was incompetence because they weren't even the headliners. At the Butlins punk weekend last year In from the Jams sound was superb, next band on the Sex Pistdolls was so bad people were walking out saying how crap they were, again all bass drum, so like you say it's not the PA it's sound engineers

this is about the longest I've gone without this pop up, hopefully it's been sorted, thanks in anticipation
I don't think I've ever listened to an Oasis song. I remember something where they were comparing themselves to The Beatles or something like that. So, they were off my radar from jump. Blue
they never really broke the USA, I quite like them they are bit Beatley but more Glam rock I'd say, not much harmony's and stuff going on, I think because Noel said he liked the Beatles people put 2 and 2 together and made 5

just bought these Fender V2 cabs off ebay after a heads up on here, £100 for both, used them for a gig at the weekend, nice clear punchy tone, clearer and punchier than the Fender V3 I've been using, and so light even my partner carried them in from the car, the 2 x 8 is 11.3 Kg and the 1 x 12 is 10.3Kg, the only downside is they're not very sensitive my Trace Elliot 250 watt amp was at 3 o clock instead of the normal 12 o clock
Thanks for all replies,i'm taking them all on board,i think that i should be looking at a better practice amp for now,as the one in this band i'm joining is an old one apparently, any way i may go and try some out in the music shops around me,would this mean taking my own Yamie, sounds silly i know but don't want to be lugging it round for the sake of it. My budget is around £250 tops at the moment.
I know it's not a very nice thing to do but you'll get an idea what you need from the music shop then go for second hand gear, you could afford so much more with your £250 budget and if you decide to move it on on the future you won't lose much money on it, I've never bought brand new gear. You must bear in mind that an amp can sound really loud on it's own but with a full band it's a different kettle of fish altogether

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU4dba_yij4 my favourite because it's so badly played, I think even I could have done better, gives hope to sh*t guitarist everywhere, starts about 1.24
My favourite "no need to bring your amp, you can use ours" was at a gig where the other band actively offered to share backline then brought a 1x8" practice combo just for us, but when it was time for them to play their bassist rolled his 8x10" rig out of his van. I've been wary of such offers ever since!
similar thing happened to me except the band that said they'd provide the backline went on first, forget what it was but it was a decent amp and cab, went we went on there was a weedy combo there, I said to the bass player "Where's the other amp?" he said "you're not using that I've bought this along for every one else"
My tongue was partly in my cheek when I posted. However, I stand by my point - that the OP simply must go and try what is available (and within his budget) to get areal idea of what will suit him.
many a true word said in jest
-
had a similar thing at a multi band bill at Rock City (the basement alas) "Don't bring your own amp they'll be one there" turns out to a totally underpowered something or other, distorted like f***, somebody recorded the gig and the bass sound was wonderful front of house, so unless you can't actually hear yourself I don't worry about it
-
Most things would be an improvement on your practice amp. You really need to go to a few shops and try some stuff out. Don't listen to us. We all suffer from confirmation bias and will recommend what we have.
this is so true
If someone pays via Paypal, then the item has to be sent to the address held by Paypal, using a tracked and signed for service, which is why you can enter a tracking number on Paypal when you despatch it. If someone collects, then there's no proof of delivery. They turn around and say it wasn't received, Paypal gives them their money back. I've had it where they say they can't collect because they're ill, they usually say they've got cancer or something horrible like that. Don't play around with them, just delete their texts and ignore them. These are criminals, not people to be messing with.

I always state cash on collection only, no other arrangement will be entertained, in capitals on the advert. I've actually met some very nice people who've bought stuff from me through Gumtree, you just need to be sensible.
sounds sensible to me, if selling on Gumtree it has to be cash on collection me thinks, maybe electronic transfer into my bank account, certainly not paypal, far to dodgy
So why not get them to pay using this? Doesn't cost them any more - why would they decline? Scared of being scammed?
but it is a scam just not sure what it is, I'd sooner not get involved, they've no intention of buying the bass have they?
-
If the buyer makes a "Friends and family" payment through Paypal can they still claim the money back?
apparently not

much as I'm tempted to string them along, I'll just reply cash on collection, do people actually for fall this?

has anybody found an internet tab that shows the correct way of playing the main riff? I haven't
Aladdin Sane version does have the early bass cock up in it actually.
I don't think it's a cock up if he does it every time, if it's the same one we're talking about (just before Bowie starts singing) he does it on the live TOTP's version as well

Why can't singers sing in the original key?
PaulWarning replied to la bam's topic in General Discussion
I do wish people wouldn't use the term musician as a way of criticicising anyone with less knowledge/skill than themselves, it's one of those 'irregular verbs': I'm a musician, you are a 'player' and he's a total amateur. OK hands up those people with nothing left to learn. I'm glad to see people mentioned fatigue as a factor for vocalists and amazed it took so long before someone talked about the crossover points in someone's vocal range. There's more too, a song has points where the vocal line needs to be strong for the words to convey meaning or have emotional impact. Think of Harry Nillson singing 'Can't live' in Without You if he couldn't do the big lift at 1min 20, it would be a very ordinary song wihout that (see what I did there) There are situations where transposing songs is easy and sometimes almost impossible. If you are using an open string to give yourself time to do a hand shift in the middle of a run then you aren't going to welcome a key change. Sometimes you can just play a note an octave higher sometimes that won't work. For a guitarist chord inversions sometimes work and sometimes not, playing with the capo above the 5th fret is often really awkward as you are trying to jam four fingers into a very small space. Eb is always troublesome unless you re-tune but a 'nice' key for brass instruments. The reality in the end though is that it is the singer most of the audience will notice and remember. A good singer with a band who are doing little more than keeping time and marking the chord changes is going to be blow away the tightest most technically accomplished band with a singer who is struggling, so until someone perfects the neck capo for vocalists.......
am I a player or musician? never thought of myself as a musician (can't read music and my theory is shaky) but I write songs and can play bass in a band that does a 2 hour set and play accoustic guitar and sing at open mics, but don't earn a living from playing, do I care? not a jot. Yes it's the singer's most important, the melody line and the lyrics are what people mostly, latch onto, that's why singers get most of the attention
