Just saw this on the NME site. Totally shocked and saddened. A truly influential bassist. Been rightly discussed on here many times over.....a massive loss. RIP JW.

Just spotted it's a 4001S, with a different pickup in the neck position.

There's an OGWT clip with Barry playing a Ric copy....An Ibanez IIRC. They played 'Definitive Gaze'. Had no idea that he played a real one! Love to know which session that was. I had a chat with their bass tech (via MySpace...That's how long ago) on the Magazine reformation tour, and he was going to ask Barry which basses he played on which albums, but never got an answer! I'm personally not sure what he used....Given the effects, production, and live shots, who knows? He sounded awesome whatever!

Got beaten to it on Lemmy, so I'll add Kenny Gradney from Little Feat. Cool as the proverbial root vegetable.

The Peel Sessions album is amazing - can't recommend it enough. Bass tone on it is also fantastic in places.....the more relaxed and stripped-down feel of the sessions gives them a different feel to the albums. Side note - anyone ever noticed how the track 'Because You're Frightened' is a cheeky steal of 'Disorder' from Joy Division?

Depressing gig on Friday night. Pretty empty pub, audience that was there was all male, 55/65 age group. Only time the crowd reacted was a retread of Mustang Sally. This place was rammed before 2010....recent years, the crowds have shrunk. I really don't know how much more of this I can take!

Sad news. Great songwriter too - wrote the majority of the 1st post-Hunter album as well. Love Mott, terrible that we've now lost Overend and Buffin.

Burn is a classic. I'd personally go for Lay Down, Stay Down or Dealer. But TBH, it would be everything Mark 3 and 4. That's Purple for me. Much prefer that time to Mark 2.

Not for me I'm afraid - but if it sounds good, that's what matters!

It's always been what NG has done, don't think it's an attention thing. He's made some great quotes over the years - I personally find him entertaining. Sweeping? Often, and probably. Winds people up? Almost certainly!

I'm not a fan of NG's music in the slightest - but I always enjoy his interviews. Love him or hate him, at least his says what he thinks, and provokes opinion. Like the previous 2 pages!

Superb album, the penultimate of the original MO records. I love the MO, and John Mclaughlin's solo work too. What a career! Raphe Armstrong is a superb player as well. Not a name you see very often, but well worth checking out. His work on the last of the 3 MO records alone would be enough for legendary status!

Big problem I find is that many pubs will only book the same old, same old. Anything different is often greeted by 'the regulars didn't like it. It seems some places pander to the rule of diminishing returns, like the places is being run like an exclusive little club. There's a pub around here that will seemingly only ever book classic rock covers. Even our old-skool R'n'B trio was deemed to far from what they want....so heaven help anything from the 21st century!

My '74 Ricky had been unloved for about 30 years when I bought it. Pretty much left as the day the owner played the last note. As a result, it had a certain 'character' when I bought it. Some restoration work later, and TBH, up close, I can still get a whiff of the original odour....it's been fully cleaned, and re-sprayed in places too! At least I now know what 1980's indie music actually smelt like......

Depressing, I find that I am regularly the youngest person, both in the bands and pubs - and I'm 42! If something doesn't change, the demographic issue will no doubt have serious implications for the industry. Every year I say will be my last playing pubs - I find that with all the issues, it's only the odd gig that's fun, many are simply a chore. I love music and (sometimes) playing, but I find the playing the same circuit of pubs, that decrease every year both in numbers and attendance, will eventually have me giving up.

I play my '74 4001 on max. Just push the gain and bass on the amp. Newer 4003s are a different matter, though...

[/quote] +1. I too though RW's vocals were very iffy indeed on 'See My Baby Jive'. Chaka too. Full marks for the (I think) original key, but it's a modern symptom of acts carrying on like they did 40+ years ago. It pains me to say it, but play by all means, but pass on the vocals. This applies to numerous acts! Geddy's vocals came in for serious criticism over the last 10 (+?) years on Rush tours. Macca too. These guys can still play to perfection, but vocally?
