1. EDA905 in Ghastly Gay Orange? Looks like you're copying me, sunshine: You want to be careful - next thing you know you'll be upping sticks, moving to Edinburgh & playing prog... Jon.
  2.
Does anyone know anything about Oakland basses? One here for sale.
I know the brand - Oaklands appear on the Japanese home market, and do turn up over here from time to time. They're often quite derivative of Ibanez original designs (Blazer copies are quite common) although the ones I've seen aren't Fujigen - or Matsumoku for that matter. This one certainly has an Ibby look - particularly the headstock & trc. Looks quite tidy but I'd want a better look than those pics before I'd drop £150+ on it. Being neck-through & stripy doesn't make it a Matsumoku. I wonder if Ebay thickies will ever work that out? J.
  3. I built a perspex Precision: Tips the scales at 14lbs, kills my back & I can barely manage one song with it. Heaviest bass I can (mostly) comfortably gig with is my old JapCrap Jazzer which is a shade under 10lbs but I'm gravitating towards lighter planks - it's only a matter of time before my Hohner B2A becomes my permanent gigging bass instead of a backup! Anyone want to buy an 11lb Peavey T-40? Jon.
  4. That Aria looks quite tidy for £80. No idea about the "thinner lead" thing, ask him to elaborate! J.
  5.
Let's all make offers of £34.56...... He has a Westbury guitar for sale at an even more ridiculous price too.
Bloody hell - what a wrecked piece of crap. Am I being spectacularly ignorant in not having a clue who "The Sound" or Adrian Borland are/were? I presume this is why he thinks this garbage should be changing hands for crazy money. J.
  6. Wesley. You'd need a 24-fret neck for that. Jon.
  7. Westone Thunder 1-A, Limited Edition, hand-crafted from solid gold and lacquered with angels' tears. Presumably. J
  8.
Mine's somewhere between 12 and 13lbs. Be warned .
Bloody 'ell! Think you've just cured my GAS for one o' these! Jon.
  9.
And it sold for £40 this would of been ideal to take the frets off and get me a cheap fretless to get me going with my fretless gas!
You should take a punt on one of these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fretless-electric-ba...t-/110646503536 I think one of the biggest issues with the ultra-budget end of the market is quality control. As we've seen with the Auntie Sues, there are good ones & duffers, and when buying blind online it's pot luck what you end up with. Even if you get lucky and the neck's straight & the bridge is in the right place, then setup is pretty much guaranteed to be crap, and that's an hour or two to sort if you know what you're doing, or £30 odd to your local tech if you're not confident. Personally I've never bought a new bass - from any price range - that was well set-up when I got it. Jon.
  10.
PM'd... 'Tis mine!
Pre has gone to Cetera, pups still here! J.
  11.
Same goes for truss rod adjustment...
Absolutely. Hands off your rod until you're fully trained & qualified, or no good will come of it! J.
  12.
With your left hand, fret the lowest string (the one nearest your chin when playing) at the 1st fret. At the same time, with your right hand thumb, fret the same string at the 12th fret.
Top fret, surely Nigel? That'd be 20th - 24th, depending on the neck in question. You're looking at the overall curvature of the neck - 8th or 9th position being an approximate mid-point. Although I agree, truss adjustment isn't a good idea unless you know what you're doing & how everything works. Jon.
  13. That maple board one - You're quite right - haven't seen one of these come up for a good few years - got an idea a BCer might have nabbed the last one that did... Jon.
  14. OK, I admit 3 is stretching it a bit! BC policy is not to directly discuss price in a For Sale thread so I'll shuddup. It's a remarkable & very, very uncommon bass - if it was mine I wouldn't be selling! J.
  15.
More info on the Perspex P please.
Build thread here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=100767 J.
  16. Early/mid 70s SB75: http://www.yamaha.co.jp/product/guitar/arc...sb75/index.html Never seen one of these in the UK, like most 60s/70s era Yams they probably weren't imported here. Gorgeous bass & I'd love one, but I think I could probably get 2 or 3 for that sort of money, if I put my mind to it. Jon.
  17. It's high time you bought this, aint it? That's right - you. J.

  19. These are really rather good - I have the 2 pickup, through-neck version, very light & incredibly electronically quiet & hi-fi - sounding. It's highly likely I'm destined to take mine to the grave, because it doesn't resemble a Fender in any way. Jon.
  20. Either that or revive the RickenFakers thread in Gear Porn: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=21783 J.
  21.
I believe they had the contract in Japan for Fender.
And I believe that to be a pack of lies: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=113716 http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=121697 Jon.
  22.
Seriously cool, Jon.
Cheers Wayne! The J pic's obsolete already, it now has cream pup covers & a black pearl plate, and the P is destined never to be gigged, being a 14lb spine-mangling monster! J.
  23. I do like a bit of maple/blocks action, me: Leaning more towards pearl blocks at the moment - the Seethrough P would've had pearl but the neck got lost in the post. Good old ParcelFarce... Jon.
