1. Don't think there would be any difference in sound, the Roadies don't have the body laminations and that's it. Inlay or wood? The lams look good with the pup covers though, get a MK 1 with Saturn inlays, you know you want to. Are you still getting your Kingbass? Steve.
  2.
+1000 I used Dave Lunt recently. I had a 70's Simms-Watt head and when you turned it on all it did was hum, no signal through it or anything. £200 quid later it's fully serviced, retubed (4 Pre's, 4 Power) completely safe with IEC fitted for power so a complete overhaul and all this done in less than 24 hours. I have another Simms-watt head that needs the same work and he said he'd show me what he does so I can learn about how these beasts work. So I seriously recommend this guy, he's rewiring a bass for as we speak and I have a long long list of stuff for him to do after that I normally wouldn't trust anyone to do. His mobile number is 07966 263 616
Plus 2000. I took an Ampeg SVT IIP preamp to him yesterday for repair. I bought it from the states as they are quite rare in this country. After two weeks of it working, it started to make spluttering, static, popping noises. On the recommendations of various Basschatters I took it to Dave. Entering Daves workshop is an experience in itself, an American radio station was playing Blues in the background and a look around the subterranean workshop overwhelmed the senses with many beautiful vintage amps adorning its floor space. Get on with it! OK, the pre, after a lengthy examination was pretty tired, it was still producing a signal but the problem was a mix of dry solder joints, transformer repair, resistors and tubes replaced. So after a complete circuit test and three and a half hours of work, it was collected today and sounds ten times better than when I first got it. He has transformed it, it is the SVT sound that I was after and now it will be reliable after its complete rebuild. It was a bit of a trek for me but I don't think I will take this kind of equipment anywhere else after today.
  3.
The argeggios focus on what is central to the bassline, without the fripperies of the non-chordal notes. Rather than mindlessly go up and down the scales, find the chord sequence to a song you like and then work on applying the relevant argeggios to each chord to create a bassline. Also look at the original bass line and relate that back to building it from the arpeggio. Focusing on scales as a bass player is as useful as a beginning drummer focusing on fills - start with the essentials! Alex
That's a little like saying I am a painter who only uses two colours. If you learn just the arpeggiated notes of the chords you are using, you are missing out on millions of interesting interactions in dynamics, mood and texture. I don't play just jazz.
  4. I'm suprised that it doesn't have a switch on the back, which selects the voltage, then jusr change the fuse for one with half the value. Valve preamps are great and you described what they do brilliantly. My Ampeg SVT IIP sounds gorgeous but it is a bit poorly at the mo.
  5.
Thanks Please keep us updated on what the fault turns out to be for future reference.
I'm off to Stockport and then I'll report on what the problem was.
  6.
I'm not familiar with this preamp but my first check would be the valves. It's most unlikely to be a fuse. If a fuse blew it wouldn't work at all. I would be inclined to swap the valves around first. I think they are all the same type so they will be interchangeable. The process of removing and reseating them could be enough to resolve the problem.
Nice one I'm trying to take the thing apart, it's like a Rubiks Cube, I mention the fuse not because there is anything wrong with it but it will be the wrong value for 230v, as it came from the States, 115v, so it's best to change it. I'll reseat the valves and try again but they could be 15 years old!
More likely a power supply cap or dodgy power supply in the room you're in, it sounds very similar to somehting I experienced with my 4x8 combo a few months ago - turned out to be dodgy room electrics in the rehearsal room I was in.
Power supply cap sounds like a candidate, I don't think the power supply is at fault as it is in my house at the moment and all of my bass gear runs off the same outlet and has no problems. I've just started to dismantle the case, wish me luck. Thanks for the replys.
  7. I think it may have been built for a show as a display piece, so I'm disappointed.
  8. If I have no joy by fitting new tubes and checking solder joints, can anyone recommend a great Ampeg engineer who would be use to this particular preamp? Thanks Steve.
  9. I bought an Ampeg SVT IIP preamp a couple of weeks ago and up until today it has been fine but this afternoon it started to make loud, spluttering, intermediate but very fast static pops through my Bergantino IP 310. I have tried different basses, leads and my Avalon U5, just to check and it is the SVT IIP. I bought it from the States and changed it's volage selector to 230v, please tell me that I didn't have to change any internal fuses or the like. I think I would have to change the internal fuse for half the value. Could it be a tube problem? Even when I turn the volume of the pre fully off and there is no bass plugged in, it is still sending this eratic signal to the Berg and making the noise, the Berg cabs green signal led is flickering and should only light when it is receiving a signal. I have tried both preamp outs. It even does this when no bass is connected and still makes this noise at volume but when I play my bass I can still hear it and it still sounds good but with this sputtering over it. Can anyone please help?
  10.
Some very nice basses posted so far. Well I've had this one for sometime now so an ideal opportunity to share. Unfortunately I don't have any images of the whole bass apart from live pics but I'm sure you don't want my face spoiling it. Your not missing much else though as it's headless.
Hi Alan that is very nice and very similar to the Sei, how do they compare?
  11. Unless you lead vocalist wants to be in The Mac Lads or GG Allen, he needs to wind his neck in and lay off the sauce. If I were a punter, going to see a covers band and the singer called me a c***, I would be very upset. Sounds like YOU played a blinder and were very professional.
  12.
Hi Steve It was sort of funky rocky type indie stuff, quite hard to describe really, a mix of all of our different influences, we didn't worry about what we played, so my jazzy/funky lines were allowed as were the lead guitarists Holdsworth type solos. The drummer was really into his rock, and the rhythm player was into laid back indie stuff like the Smiths. The singer had an amazing voice, and was really into funk and Jimi Hendrix.
Hi Kev what were you called?
  13.
Here's an old (very old) photo of me with my Mark King bass. I guess I'm about 18 here, so that's about 1990, I think I got it in about 1987. What series would this be ?.
That's a great photo Kev, what kind of music did your band do then? When I use to have mine, we played rock in a psychadelic-guitar-feedback style and it didn't sit right in the mix, it recorded beautifully, with a deep, bell-like tone for chords but live it got a little lost.
  14.
Some nice basses up here. I just took a few of my old workhorse 1995 Teal 5, has a real nice grain so got a clear plate for it, rusty polepieces from many sweaty gigs... Sound has mellowed with time, but still sounds great!
That's a beaut, I love being able to see the controls.
  15.
Right... This is the board that I think will fulfill all the needs of my new band, "Songs From The Shows". I thought that buying a PedalTrain Junior would teach me discipline, but all it taught me is the virtue of buying small pedals. 'Tc' is my faourite home-made synthy fuzz, 'Ge' is a bass-friendly home-made Fuzz Factory clone, bottom left is a momentary kill switch (actually a momentary loop, but with nothing in the loop).
That's a beautiful mess, how do you power them all. I can imagine but I would like to see it in the flesh.

    Fuzz

Inspired by what I heared on the deviever.com site, I've just had a session on my GT6B. Dialing in, compression-dbx 160, Muff and phaser, I managed to get a sound that ripps through with loads of fundamental and face melting grit. If anyone can find a GT6B for a good price, buy it, they are amazing. I've had mine for a few years now and it is always delivering the goods. The settings I had each effect will be wildly different for each bass and playing style.

    Fuzz
When you say fuzz, what kind of sound are you after? If you want versatility to experiment with, maybe a Zoom Ultra Fuzz would be best. Fuzz is so personal, it's hard to take a recommendation. I don't like Big Muffs, for example. Others love them. To blow your mind go to www.deviever.com/fx .More flavours of fuzz than going into a Baskin Robbins full of off-duty police and snogging the lot of them.
Excellent site, I'll be ordering a bass Fuzz a.s.a.p., the joy-stick boxes are insane....I like!
  18.
I'd much rather not have to post this if there's someone who can come and pick it up. Matthew Sanchez, please PM me if you're still interested and we'll work something out. I live on Martlesham Heath. It weighs 3.2 Kg so it'll cost about £12 to post allowing for packaging material. I'm not able to get to a post office during the week Here are some pictures. In the second picture you can see my first attempt at a template showing where the neck pickup rout should be and where I was going to put a MM pickup in the bridge position.
Hi Pete that's a beautiful piece of wood. Shame but someone with skill could have a great piece there.
  19. A hundred pounds, what the duce?
  20. Looks like I might have to sell the ACG for this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ORIGINAL-THE-PINK-SPID...1QQcmdZViewItem WTF are the Pink Spiders?
  21.
I think the 6-string Streamline is going to be a guitar as opposed to a bass. I'm down at the factory again next Thursday so I'll bring back all the rumours and goss then! Hopefully will get to see the mk2 KingBass as well.
You bloody live there, would you also ask if there are any plans to build the Streamliner in left hand, or if they will build the replacement necks in lefty, please? Thanks Steve.
  22.
He he...well she is a bass player and the thread is erm...great bass player photos..
And she is a brilliant bass player. She has so much feel and understanding but the big, loud boys, who came into the playground, got the teachers attention.
  23.
Saved me a post, But I can't believe no-ones mentioned Martin Kemp & that bloke from Kajagoogoo. Mick Karn and his Wal were the reason I started playing.
Oi Miss Diane, Im wi da no eye brows was good, wan e. Shuee McFee was probably a great bassist too.
  24.
Nate Watts..
Nate is sub zero. I remember watching a live performance (recorded obviously) of Stevie back in the 70's on telly, when my mum let me stay up after much protesting and thinking it was the most amazing thing I had ever heared. Years later, I saw the same footage and realised why, Nate had seeded my love of funk back when I was a little boy. Thank you.
  25.
some of my favorite
I like the first one of M and the Marcus is kind of Art Gallery but the blue paint Michelle looks, well, nothing to do with bass and Vic looks like he's advertising Gap clothes.
