1. I think at the end of the day you just have to accept that in popular music there'll always be some herbert in the crowd who thinks he knows better. If you were in a classical or jazz situation there would be nothing but admiration for your playing, but in the context of a pub gig or a jam session, due to the popularisation & de-formalisation of the instrument, every Tom, Dick & Harry thinks he knows best, or at least better than you. The best thing to do in these situations is really know your stuff & play to the best of your ability at all times. You don't prove you're a good player with words. You prove it via your musical ability. Yes, I get the odd herbert coming up occasionally (he knows who he is!) and constantly tells me I need to use mids and a pick (neither of which I shall ever use!) Well, my simple answer to him is in the form of a question... "How much money have you made from bass playing this year, then?" But that's just me being a git Usually I'll just smile knowingly and make polite conversation. There's no need for an argument, no need to blank people. Just be nice and prove them wrong musically. Now that's style
2. Someone was asking about concentric pots the other day - Even if you don't like the bass, you've got concentric pots for your jazz!
3. Quite why he'd want to take out the tone pump, I'm not sure. I'd have valued this at up to £600 fully intact, but without the tone pump you've got some work to do to get it back up to correct spec. I'd not be inclined to go over £500 for that. Perhaps best to ask if the tone pump can be included.
4. Just checked prices & previously SoundsLive were quoting £799 for fiesta red. Now it's gone up to £869 !
5. How about this...? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=Fender+Jazz
6. It seems to be to do with the height/power of the magnets in the polepieces. Mine had the variable height ones & I had no problem, but the more modern pickups with the flush polepieces seem to suffer from this problem. The only concrete fix was found by putting in a replacement Nordstrand pickup. There's a thread on the BG forum detailing this.
7. Looks like it's either the 75RI USA or Japan. The Japanese ones come up for around £400-500 used around these 'ere parts. The one I had was very good...
8. The Spector Legend 4 for a 5 sounds a reasonable idea. Depends on what string spacing you like. The Spectors, Warwicks and Ibeanez basses tend to have very narrow string spacing. If you want to maintain your wide spacing from your 4-string, have a look at the MIM Fender Jazz V. Yamaha 5ers tend to be widely spaced too, at around 18mm.
9. Congrats on your new rig, Rachel
10. Having owned an American Standard Precision, I'd say it's a lovely bass (if you like Precisions), but the 62AV model I had with the nitro cellulose finish was something else. Pure tone machine. Wait for one of those to come up. What happened to the fretless, Michael?
11. Lovely looking setup you have there now. Just goes to show that we can all compact our gear if we want/need to. Perhaps we should also ask how the wedding went? Rich
12. A note from Rob Green posted on Statii today... Hi Everybody, YES ! There is a 'new' KingBass to celebrate Level 42's thirty years making fine music. The general specifications are along the lines of the original (smaller body) KingBass but with the later J pickups added. The graphite through-neck is set into the body underneath the book-matched facing. There are two models : 1. Birdseye maple with a vintage sunburst. 2. Flame maple with a cherry amber sunburst. There are more tweaks to the bass and I'll be adding details and photographs to the web-site this week so keep logging on. Also.... I took a new bass up to Chris Wolstenholme (Muse) a couple of weeks ago while they were checking through their massive arena set. It's a headed S2-Classic through-neck with a walnut facing and mahogany back. He Loved it and will be using it during this summers festivals and arena gigs. We are also kicking other ideas around for him so more Muse news soon. All the best, Rob.
13. Dear Lonesome, yet busy Peter, I think you need to join either a trio where there is room to express yourself, or a seriously cool funk band where you can slap and pop to your heart's content. Remember that when you arrive in bass heaven, the player who plays the most number of notes in a bar is the one who will rule over all mankind & be supplied with an infinite number of nubile virgins...
14. Excellent - Well I'm glad it worked out well for you & the 3TS model is really nice looking, too. I keep thinking of popping in there, but I know I'll spend a lot of money on something! I keep eyeing up the used KingBass he has & also the top of range Nordstrand 5-string! I think it's best I keep away from there, LOL!
15. Heh! I had a feeling from your mentioning the Nash a few times in the last week that another may be winging it's way towards Clarky Towers Congrats mate & I hope this one is as good as the CAR one was. Did you go to Bass Direct in person, btw? Rich.
16. Some better pics of the new bass. It is a Mk-I KingBass with J-type pickups, cherryburst finish over a maple top & green/red LED's, btw...
17. Or alternatively you can contact the event organizers and request a different sound guy. We had similar problems at the pro panto last Xmas. The sax player & I ended up going up to the youngest engineer and telling her to "set up our sound at the start of the show and f*****g well leave it alone - Step away from the desk!!!", due to her constant messing with the system throughout numbers and the show - Even to the point of deafening us through the earphones & switching us off during numbers. You can try and be diplomatic, but there are times where you'll encounter a moronic individual who needs a dose of common sense.
18. These are very good basses - Made by the Hora instrument company in Romania. Obviously people will spend a lot of money on getting these cheaper basses set up with new bridges, strings & cases, etc., hence the increased price. An endorsement from Tom Martin is worth noting as well.
19.
Some great threads/polls ecently OTPJ - cheers!
Cheers, Loz! I have to keep you all occupied on a dull bank holiday
20. Now now, children... I could have sworn this thread was to celebrate a particularly good deed by RT & the fact that the Pastorius family now have the Bass of Doom back where it belongs. It'd be great to see Felix playing his father's bass live, wouldn't it? But if you're going to get into the old "My Dad's bigger then your Dad" routine, we'd might as well get the mods to close this one straight away.
21. Gareth has a nice thread going on about settling with your favourite gear, so I wondered what people's top five basses were from what they've owned? Mine are as follows... 1. Status S2 (X3) (For me, the ultimate all rounder - Great sound, great playability & ergonomics, peerless build quality.) 2. Status Streamline (Ridiculously small & light with massive attitude plus all of the above.) 3. Fender Jazz (particularly Road Worn & 50th Anniversary. You just can't beat that classic burp!) 4. Warwick Corvette $$ (Massive punch/clarity and stupidly sold!) 5. Yamaha TRB-6 II (Hugely playable 6 with great sound & massive value.)
22. I think that after a frenzied period of buying, selling, trading, etc., we all find our personal "nirvana" at some point. Clarky & Beedster are into their vintage Fenders, Gareth's into his Fenders/Music Man basses, Ped's into his Vigiers, etc. Mine are definitely Status basses for the main part of my playing, and if I need a more traditional instrument, a Fender Jazz does the job just fine. I've been through a long search of wooden basses & arrived back at the passive Jazz bass after trying active Jazzes, Super Jazzes (they're all fantastically made & well equipped, but somehow miss the mark by a country mile!), Music Man Stingrays, an ACG, Precisions, etc, etc. At the end of the day, if I'm not using a Status bass, the Jazz will do just fine. As for amplification, my rig has been a gradual evolution over 25 years from cheap Laney gear, through lots of Trace Elliot, Ashdown, Mark Bass and finally onto Genz Benz. I don't really GAS for amplifiers. As long as they're reliable, light weight and faithfully reproduce the sound of my instruments, I'm not really fussed.
23.
I'd imagine it would pick up a few extra quid on ebay simply because it says "Fender" in big letters. The confusion above re JV series instruments raises an interesting ethical question... I personally have never listed a serial number in an auction. Would the seller have a moral obligation to point out in the listing that this is not a JV series instrument? Or would it be sufficient to say made in Korea? My concern would be that someone with an inkling that big-Fender-logo Squiers are worth upwards of £500 would over-bid on it... or would it be their fault for not having done their homework?
I'd advertise it as a "Fender Squier series" made in Korea. That saves any confusion on the part of potential buyers. As for people's impressions of JV's, I've only played a couple, but Higgie's JV Precision is among the best I've played.
24.
On the Roscoe 5 I boost the mid to about 80%, bass and treble to about 70%, and favour slightly more back pickup on the pan. The Jazz I have both pickups full for slap and back off the front slightly for fingerstyle. Tone set on about 50%. Then the fingers do the work.
That's interesting, Pete - It does seem that on the higher quality preamps (such as Roscoe & Status) that the frequencies are very well chosen, so lots of boost doesn't seem too boomy or too harsh.
25. Never heard of ISP before. Looks good, though. I assume the speakers aren't neodymium, then?
