1. I like his "aged" 50's p/telebass, but I think he overdid the ageing thing, unless it's really meant to look as though it's done a few rounds with an industrial sander!
2. Sharkfinger, apparently there is a japanese standard if you look at my link I didn't know, either! http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/index.php?...guitars&a=3
3. Just looked at The Guitar Emporium (another Japanese importer) & the difference seems to be about £90 more for the vintage one. You seem to get a maple neck (worth it!), vintage japanese p-pickups & bridge. Both have the basswood body. It's another £120 to get into the alder body variety. Have a look at the link, all the specs are there http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/index.php?...guitars&a=3
4. Well, two days on & it's appeared via UPS... Setup even with the stock strings is sublimly low & fast. Everything they say about the neck on the GL is true... It's the loveliest jazz neck I've ever played on! Will need to bring the action up a little when I change the strings later, as I usually take my basses down to 35-90's.
5. Actually, it just arrived... So that's ordered from stock on Tuesday am, dispatched Tuesday 4pm, arrived 10am Thursday Just putting up pics for bassporn forum now...
6. Just wondered if anyone has experience of Thomann delivery times via the free UPS service. My Geddy Lee jazz was dispatched on Tuesday pm & I was wondering when to expect it? Yours impatiently, etc...
7. I have pupils with lots of P-bass copies... The nicest ones are the Squire Affinity (quality can vary on these hugely), the Boston bass package at under £100 is a great bass. Lovely neck. But the one I'm going to go with is the Crafter Cruiser. We just bought one the other week for our retiring head of the Music Dept., and it was lovely. I think I got the bass for £90 but what an instrument!
8. Professional bassist with 20 years' teaching experience. All styles/standards catered for, from simple beginner notation reading & technique to slap, jazz line building & soloing. Other instruments taught... Violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, classical g****r, music theory.
9. Hey CW, love your collection, especially the JayDee & Alembic. It was also very interesting to read about the history of all the instruments on your site. Pardon my ignorance, but are the Smith basses UK made? Listening to the sound clips, the 5-stringer sounds very Status-esque
10. That's a lovely looking jazzer, Magnolia! Are you going to baddass/j-retro it? Did you import it, or get it from the Guitar Emporium? Seems a lot are going Japanese at the moment. I've just ordered a Geddy Lee japanese jazz
11. I'm tempted at the JJ model. Just emailed them, so we'll see what comes back, although I may need to wait a little while, as I've just bought a Hofner violin bass & have a Geddy Lee Jazz on order!
12. Hmmm... Just bought my Hofner violin bass last week & ordered a Geddy Lee jazz today. I think the bank needs time to be replenished!
13. Here goes... Basses... Columbus (black Charvel sorta shape) bought when I was 16! Hohner The Jack Custom Status Series II (no.402) (bought this in 1990 & kept it until my KingBass arrived in 2006) Yamaha TRB-5 Nathan East model Goodfellow (can't remember the model, but it was lovely!) 14. Well, I ordered the Geddy Lee from the Germans (Thomann) this morning. Seemed a very good price at £588 and in stock as well. We'll see how fast it gets here! Hope I did the right thing...!
15. Yes, that's what it looks like. The body certainly isn't Status & Rob Green would never let even one of the older wooden necks out of the factory looking like that. Perhaps the Status bridge, tuners & pickups would be worth salvaging, but this is definitely not a real Status bass.
16. Lfalex, yes I did have the VMJ, but I traded it (and my Status Groove) for the amazing Warwick $$ I also sold my MIM Jazz V to a pupil at around the same time. But I do still have the jazz bug, so I'm thinking a Geddy's on it's way from Thomann this week. I also looked at the importers & the only one I liked the look of was the 75 reissue natural ash with the badass II for £799. With the Geddy I can have all that & a J-retro as well for the same money! Seems to make sense to me, anyway Interesting to see so many Lakland endorsees here as well. I've never played one, but have always liked the look of them. Here goes.............
17. Hmmm... lots of interesting stuff emerging here I really do like the Marcus, but I prefer the Geddy with a J-retro added later. On the other hand, I thought the Geddy was a MIJ instrument with 62 vintage pickups on it??
18. Hmmm... I feel a new classification coming along here - Stealth GAS! I haven't had that for a while. I suppose it's because I spend so much time on the web looking at basses, my GAS-ing is controlled by desiring what I've looked at and researched. I think a Geddy Lee jazz is coming this week. Got the bug again at the moment after having a fun day out buying my Hofner violin bass last week
19. Hey neighbour... Nice bass you've bought there! You can't beat a good jazz
20. I've played an EB3 cherry at a friend's shop... It was okay, if unremarkable. The thing you have to remember is that you're never going to get a modern bass sound of any kind from a bass that has a pickup right at the base of the neck. I like the vintage sound and decided to go the whole hog this last week. I bought a Hofner Contemporary violin bass in black with white piping. It's utterly lovely & very easy to play, with a very smooth bottm end resonance much like my Triumph upright - Short scale too, for those of you who complain of small hands Much the best buy if you want a vintage sound. (I'm getting them in for £320 a time!) Try one, you won't be disappointed.
21. Hey everyone, I've got my Ibanez 5-stringer on the 'bay & can't decide which Fender jazzer to go for... I love the look of the USA S1 jazz in Candy Cola, but I can't justify the crazy pricetag! I've got it down to the Geddy Lee & the Marcus Miller nt4, both of which I can have at a similar price. Which would you choose & why? And are these two basses with their badassII's appreciably better than the hideously overpriced US S1 variant? Thanks in advance, OTPJ
22. Quite, yes! Although I usually have a very modern bass sound with the Status/Warwick & the MarkBass rig. This was a good opportunity to try the amplifier's vintage sound filter. Very effective as well. I also use this sort of setup for the Triumph upright. Sibob, yes it sounds hugely better on the rounds. Like a more 3-dimensional sound at the bottom end & more of an old p-bass sound at the top. All in all, very satisfying.
23. The aforementioned Bolin player is Huw from the Beer Monsters (www.soditletshaveabeer.co.uk) and General Skullduggery (www.generalskullduggery.co.uk). Bev & Carol at the Music Inn are the only people I've seen carrying Bolins in the UK as well. You may find one in the bass gallery in London, but I definitely haven't seen them anywhere else. Here's a little shot of Huw with his Bolin...
24. That's odd, Machines... We played Here Comes The Sun in our last couple of gigs, but on my Warwick $$.
25. Hey everyone, picked thios up today & changed the godawful thuddy flats for some 35-90 rounds. Much better & what an adaptable sound! Whadda-ya think?
