1. You all know the routine - Leave your Fender plugged in & without touching it, the bad earth demons hit until you touch the strings & it all goes quiet! My MIM Jazz V was pretty quiet, but the vintage pups on my Geddy Lee Jazz are noisy as hell in this respect - Is there any known cure? It's particularly bad in my case, as I use a lot of treble, so it's very noticable.
2. Good point, Oxblood - Perhaps I'll doa full review when I go back & pick up one of their 6-stringers...
3. Congrats, looks in fabulous condition for a 20 year old instrument. Looks almost new
4. Nice MM SUB, Kev... One of my pupils has one, and I think it's a great bass to play I see you're highly effects-laden, too!
5. A current Ashboury sounds a nice & cheap alternative to a double bass or an EUB.
6. The new ones are renamed slightly... They've been updated with the Leo Quan Badass II bridge & graphite poles in the neck, etc. Look at "Highway One". Alternatively look at the Geddy Lee Jazz bass. Arguably the best bass Fender makes at the moment (according to many!)
7. Here's a Status Buzzard 2 on ebay... It could be yours http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Status-Graphite-Bass...1QQcmdZViewItem
8. Hey there, More info & research on the "Ace Pro" bargain Korean/Chinese instruments... I went down to the Music King to play some of the instruments yesterday & it was very enlightening. First off, if anyone's thinking of buying one (most at under £200), make sure you go and hand pick one you like for yourself. Some of the body finishes aren't finished at all, but some are very nice, so choosing one you like is vital. Obviously, patchy quality is going to be an issue in this price range. I ended up playing the Ace Pro 8-stringer which was a very strange experience. Nicely made bass, great hardware, but a real special occasion instrument! Also played a 4-stringer which was equally well made, but the neck was rather thick, like a Warwick Streamer, or a Stingray. The real surprise of the bunch was the six-stringer, which is lovely & wide/flat necked with a strong preamp & a great sound. Highly recommended! I'm going back to get one next week, I think I ended up actually buying a couple of cheap starter packages to rent to pupils. Two Boston p-bass packages (including 15w amp, etc.) in a lovely sunburst. Go try the Ace Pros - You may be pleasantly surprised!
9. I know what you mean, Ste... Older instruments are often attractive (mainly to collectors) and fetch very high prices, but if you're a technical player (more than a simplistic 'plodder'), a modern instrument is so much more satisfying. I'm very interested in the Fender bass history & in fact bought two books on it today, but I'd never buy an old bass. For me a bass has to be new & shiny and not look as though it's been dragged kicking & screaming behind the gig van as opposed to in it! But more importantly, it has to work with me when I'm playing, rather than making playing an uphill struggle. As for the mex standard Fenders, they're very good these days. I just did a setup on a pupil's mex Precision & it was almost as fast as my Geddy Lee when I'd done with it. Nowt wrong with 'em
10. Couldn't find a rosewood board one, but you wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a 3tsb precision with a black pickguard! How's this one?
11. Hey everyone, anyone played one of the current Burns Bison basses? Also, do you know of anyone stocking them at the moment, as I'd love to try one? The spec looks very good for the money
12. +1 for John 'Rhino' Edwards... Again, not just his Quo stuff, but for his impressive pedigree before joining the band as a session player in '86. One of my current favourites is Jefferson Airplane's Jack Casady. Very understated player, but beautifully melodic. Have a look/listen to the flash movie of him playing on the front page of his website. www.jackcasady.com ??
13. OutToPlayJazz - The name of a rather good jazz band that's backed several big named dieties & since taking over the running of said band, the bass player has become known as OutToPlayJazz... Strange, but it's a bit of a misnomer, as the jazz work is thin on the ground & OTPJ is mainly playing rock/pop/funk with The_PHD at the moment... The history... After starting as a cellist at age 8, took up the piano at age 11 & the double bass at 15. Wanted to play along to the Status Quo videos (with Alan Lancaster & his Kramers) and the Double Bass just didn't hack it... Went to buy first godawful bass guitar at the age of 16 & never looked back. Then John 'Rhino' Edwards joined quo, and bass suddenly looked a whole lot cooler (Sad man, or what??). The old black Jackson/Charvel copy had to go & a shiny new Hohner "The Jack" appeared, as a Status Series II was out of the question at the age of 17! But at 20 years old, OTPJ took out a huge loan to buy his first Status - Yes, a real one! History was in the making... Cut to the present... OTPJ has a veritable arsenal of forever GAS-incurred basses, still plays the Double Bass, Cello, etc., professionally & is a keen exponent of transferring DB technique onto the bass guitar for stable technique & lithe speed! Either that, or he's rather anally retentive! You decide
14. Being as I've been with Mrs.Jazz for over 8 years, I tend to ignore such things at gigs, but I was taken aback by the sheer volume of requests to sign girls' cleavage after we headlined the Welsh International Motorcycle show this May
15. DJ, that's gorgeous! I've hung my nose over a couple of G&L tributes in the last few months, but bought my Hofner & Geddy Lee instead for the time being The one I played in Hull was excellent. Tempting... Rich.
16.
yeah, I agree - the idea of a custom bass is a nice one - but i'm not to sure what I want, and I'm not really willing to tkae that financial risk. Actually I do know what i want - a bass that plays and looks like the warwick - but has the sound, punch and versatility of the yamaha - sadly i'm not sure if it exists. Thanks
Actually, there is one... A Warwick Corvette $$ 5-stringer. I have the 4-string version & I still can't believe it's become my main bass. I even play it in preference to my Status KingBass these days, and it's literally a third of the cost. It's fast like no other Warwick & the output/sound variations from the switchable humbuckers/preamp is awsome. I believe someone on here has the new thru neck version... That should be within reach of your budget as well...
17. Fender Geddy Lee Jazz from Thomann.de @ £588. Postage is free. Got mine last week
18. One of my pupils had a rather nice active dean bass a few years ago (don't ask me which one), but he px'd it for a Status Series II. 'Nuff said!
19. The only thing I recall is that the vintage instruments (like the Marcus Miller jazz's) seem to have a more rounded neck. The more modern jazz basses have the modern "C" shaped neck which is flatter for the thumb. I have the Geddy Lee jazz which has an extra thin shaved down neck, same as Geddy's original instrument. BTW, tell me if I'm wrong all you Fender experts, by all means!
20. I looked it up, but couldn't find anything, either. Sorry
21. Yes, that's a fantastic looking T-Bird Would like one of those! Pity about the blue LP money bass, though (week 7). Looks so much better in the standard rootbeer colour with the gold hardware.
22. Hey Andre, good to see you on here! The Moo will be jealous of your new "MooBass" Did you sell that SmartBass in the end?
23. Tricky... My Status KingBass is on the "hotwires" (made by Status-Graphite), whereas all my other basses run on RotoSound 35-90 swingbass sets... Amplification is all MarkBass - Do they have a sideline in strings yet?
